ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING PROGRAM

Master of Science (MSc) in Environmental Engineering Master of Engineering (MEng) in Environmental Systems Design University has one of the most comprehensive libraries in the Middle East with its state-of-

the-art information access technologies, up-to-date computing facilities and well-equipped experimental research laboratories. AUC provides quality education from an American-based system entirely in the English language, thus preparing students for PhD programs in North America and Europe and for global engineering job opportunities.

Financial Opportunities

Fellowships: provide students with a full or partial tuition waiver and a stipend.

Teaching and Research Assistantships: does not include tuition waivers, but offer stipends.

Work-Study Program: provide students with a 15 percent reduction in tuition costs in exchange for a certain number of work hours per week.

Financial Aid: available to students who demonstrate financial need.

Fellowships Without Stipend: offered to visiting graduate or post-doctoral scholars who wish to do research in Egypt and have a source of funding but need an affiliation with AUC.

Other Awards: students may be able to obtain funding from a variety of outside sources.

The American University in Cairo (AUC) was founded in 1919. It is an independent, nonprofit institution of higher education. AUC offers undergraduate and graduate programs in a wide range of disciplines and enrolls more than 5,000 degree seeking students, with nearly 1,000 of them at the graduate level.

AUC is incorporated in Washington, D.C., and is fully accredited in the U.S. by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

In Egypt, AUC’s degrees are equivalent to those awarded by the Egyptian national universities.

Mission

The mission of the environmental engineering program is to provide a solid foundation and high quality educational opportunities that prepare students for advanced academic, research and professional careers in environmental engineering. This enables the graduates of this program to advance and broaden their technical knowledge and allows them to enhance their career opportunities.

Requirements for Admission

To receive full admission to the graduate program in environmental engineering, a candidate must have a Bachelor of Science in engineering with an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.75, with a minimum overall rating of “good” and a major GPA of 3.0. Provisional admission may be granted to those not qualifying for full admission but who have additional attributes that give them high potential for success.

Academic Offerings

• Master of Science (MSc) in Environmental Engineering

• Master of Engineering (MEng) in Environmental Systems Design

Master of Science in Environmental Engineering

The Master of Science program in environmental engineering is an interdisciplinary engineering degree that provides theoretical and experimental skills to prepare students for academic, research and professional careers. In addition, it provides in-depth knowledge in environmental engineering with a strong research component.

A total of 33 credit hours are required. Of these, students must select a minimum of eight courses (24 credit hours) from the following categories:

I Core Courses (6 credit hours)

All students are required to select two out of the four core courses.

ENGR 511 - Computational Methods in Engineering (3 credits) ENGR 512 - Experimental Methods in Engineering (3 credits) ENGR 516 - Engineering for a Sustainable Environment (3 credits) ENGR 518 - Engineering Statistics (3 credits)

II Concentration Courses (12 credit hours)

All students must select a minimum of four courses from the concentration courses.

ENVE 561 - Water Quality Control (3 credits)

ENVE 562 - Unit Operations in Environmental Engineering (3 credits) ENVE 564 - Air Pollution Control Engineering (3 credits)

ENVE 567 - Environmental Chemistry (3 credits)

ENVE 569 - Groundwater Hydrology and Contamination (3 credits) III Elective Courses (6 credit hours)

A minimum of two courses are selected from elective courses or from a related field of interest.

IV Thesis and Seminar (9 credit hours)

Graduate thesis work is a requirement for the MSc in environmental engineering program.

Each student must submit a thesis topic that has been approved by a committee that includes a faculty advisor, and other faculty members in the program.

Master of Engineeringin Environmental Systems Design

The Master of Engineering in environmental systems design is a non-thesis option that prepares graduate students for higher-level professional practice in local and international markets, whether in private consulting practice, industry, or government and regulatory activities.

Program Requirements

The Master of Science in environmental engineering in environmental systems design program requires a total of 33 credit hours, divided as follows:

I Engineering Core (6 credit hours)

ENGR 516 - Engineering for Sustainable Environment (3 credits) One course (3 credits) is selected out of ENGR 511, 512 or 518 II Environmental Engineering Core (15 credit hours) ENVE 561, 562, 564, 567, and 569
