Either with the letter Z coming after the others, or with the increased number of professors at the science faculty. It meant many things, but for me it was conservation methods in BIO 214. My PhD research on the biology of ten-pound Elops larceta (Val.) in three aquatic habitats: Lekki Lagoon (freshwater), Lagos Lagoon (brackish water), and coastal waters off the coast of Lagos (marine) showed a link between the three habitats and fish species in the three ecosystems.
For some, fish refers to the most dominant aquatic vertebrates in the aquatic faunal assemblages. The manuscript: Ugwumba (1989) on the distribution and growth of the ten pounder ELops Lacerta (Val) in the aquatic environment of Lagos, Nigeria revealed the spatial distribution and growth patterns of the species. The ten-pounder spends at least one year in the lagoons and that in the third.
Ten-pound reproductive biology published in Ugwumba and Ikusemiju (1992) confirmed the occurrence of different size groups and life history stages in the three respective environments. During the twenty-five month duration of the study, adults were recorded only in the marine environment off the coast of Lagos.

Studies have used morphometric, meristic and electrophoretic techniques to separate and confirm different species of Croaker (Pseudotolithus in Nigerian coastal waters and have paved the way for effective sustainable resource exploitation and management. Further contributions on freshwater fish biology include Ugwumba O:A. 1993 ) which reported for the first time the biology of the former saltwater black-jawed tilapia Sarotherodon melanotheron (Ruppel) in a freshwater lake - Awba Reservoir, University of Ibadan. Physico-chemical parameters are included in acceptable values - water turbidity, transparency and temperature, all of which had a favorable effect on the growth of algae in the stream.
The rich animal diversity in the middle floodplain of Cross River was symbolized by one hundred and one (101) species of phytoplankton, seventy seven (77) species of zooplankton and sixty nine (69) species of fish (Okogwu, Nwani and Ugwumba 2009; . Okogwu and Ugwumba 2009,2010). Among the finfish, three marine intrusive species were recorded in the middle reaches of the Cross River (Decapterus rhinchus, Trachinotus tersia and Caranx hippos), which confirms the migratory behavior of these fish species. In the 1970s and 1980s, aquaculture accounted for up to 11% of total fish production in the United States, and 50% in China.
Vice Chancellor, Sir, in the early 1990s we hinted at new and profitable frontiers in aquaculture. The fertilized eggs are then iricubated and the hatched larvae are raised in a hatchery, which can be indoor or outdoor, to hatch or fry.

In the male, the steroid mediation of GtH action on the testis to effect spermiation and seminal hydration is not clear (fig. 6). Hypophysation is only effective when the eggs in the ovary have reached the resting or dormant phase, i.e. Ugwumba and Ugwumba (2003) also reviewed several documented reports on artificial reproduction, including Ugwumba et al. 1998) where we used Ovaprim in the Limpe option to spawn fish.
Hypophysing along this line, despite its apparent sophistication, remains the method of choice for rural fish farmers, as it can be carried out in the absence of facilities such as centrifuges, electrical balance and refrigeration. For me and my colleagues in the Department, one of the problems was how students answer biology questions. Ugwumba (1993a) Environmental pollution in the petroleum industry and its effects on human and aquatic life.
Initiative of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) - Use of Nuclear Technology in the Assessment of Contamination in the Marine Environment. Vice Chancellor, my second research activity in the marine environment was that of an environmental evangelist. During previous research activities, I have used fish in the study of fisheries of lagoons and coastal waters of Nigeria.
Conservation is defined as the highest sustainable quality for humanity through the rational use of the environment and all its resources. As we turn to the deep seas for a wide range of solutions for humanity now and in the future, the wise use of these resources in the deep seas requires knowledge of the resources and the delicate environment in which they live. The presence of some species indicates the presence/accumulation of natural resources in the deep seabed.
Vice Chancellor, Sir, over the years in pursuing my academic career; I observed and sometimes contributed to the formulation of. If we have not been able to achieve this for more than thirty years, the fish will wither in the next three to four years. I will speak and defend what we have done in the Biological Sciences and the Faculty of Science, sir.
I thank all my colleagues in the Department of Zoology, University of Ibadan, who continued to follow the foundations and academic relationships passed on by us. ancestors who were free from geographical affiliations. To my professional colleagues in the Fisheries Society of Nigeria (FISON), I salute you all and also those in the Zoological Society of Nigeria (ZSN) that I am currently the President.I reiterate my promise to serve you with ALL MY BEST .
I salute the President, Executive Committee and members of the Senior Staff Club, University of Ibadan, especially the current Exco who through hard work returned the glory of the club to the era when I was President and First Chairman. Table 1. Their ability to oversee and manage the large investment by the University in the Staff Club is commendable.

Professor Ugwumba was born on Monday, March 19, 1956, the sixth of Mr. Alex's seven children. He was the penultimate of the children who accompanied the father during his final years as divisional school inspector. He was subsequently admitted to university. from Ibadan from 1976 to 1979 where he graduated with a BSc.
In April 1985, he joined the staff of the Department of Zoology, University of Ibadan as Lecturer II. He is a member of the Editorial Board - Nigerian Association of Aquatic Sciences; Member of the Senate, University of Ibadan 1998 to date. Professor Ugwumba is happily married to his best friend and university classmate - Adiaha AIda Alex Ugwumba, a professor and head of the Department of Zoology, University of Ibadan.
