The Economy and the Royal Finances of the Viceroyalty of New Granada, 1761-1800 Adolfo Meisel
This paper analyses the tax revenues of the Royal Treasury of the Viceroyalty of New Granada from 1761 to 1800. This is the first time that this information has been presented for the totality of the viceroyalty, since to date only a few of the local treasuries had been studied by economic historians. The main result is that in the period 1760-1800, there was a sustained a drastic increase in the revenues of the royal treasury in New Granada. The fiscal surplus generated by the interior provinces, mainly the mining regions of the west, was spent in financing the defenses of Cartagena de Indias. It was only in the final decades of the eighteenth century that an increase fiscal pressure and the stagnation in Cartagena´s military expenses, allowed for a fiscal surplus that could be sent to the Royal Treasury in Madrid.
