The Mexican economy from the Bourbon period to the Independence wars, 1760- 1810

Luis Jáuregui y Carlos Marichal

In this paper we argue that the economy of Mexico in the second half of the eighteenth century experienced quite rapid growth in most sectors and regions despite the enormous fiscal and financial contributions which the viceroyalty was oblige to make to support other parts of the Spanish empire and of the metropolis itself. We begin with a review of the notable increase of silver production which exercised a major role in international trade and monetary systems, but also generated favorable conditions for economic expansion and for a great increase in tax revenues. The paper also analyzes the principal trends of agriculture, manufacturing and trade as well as evaluating the degree of inflation that can be judged to have affected the Mexican economy at the end of the period under review.
