Maughan the Soulscryer closed his eyes and dived deep into the spirit world. It was like plunging into an icy stream, for there was no warmth in
this barren realm where the dead ruled and the living suffered. The screams of tortured souls came to him through the murk, their wailing distorted by the bitterly cold ether that engulfed him. It was hard to navigate in Shyish with so much necromantic magic saturating the air, but Maughan could just about trace the spirit energy.
It took him across bleak lands and deserted villages to a river – a man- made river by the looks of it – that churned with bound souls. Maughan followed their wake upstream, ignoring their cries as his spirit essence glided by, past long-deserted cities to a vast stone monolith. Dark magic saturated the air around it, drawn to a brazier burning at its summit. Maughan had found what he was looking for. Yet it wasn’t the soul siphon that terrified him, for something else blazed with such abominable energy that it obliterated all light around it. His spirit essence retreated hastily to his body and he emerged from the spirit world breathing hard. The air was cold and crisp, but not even slightly refreshing. It tasted of death.
“You have found the way?” said Volturnos, looking down on Maughan
where he sat. The High King’s one remaining eye shone in the darkness like a gemstone, hard and intent.
“I have,” replied Maughan. He could taste ash in his mouth. “But the Great Necromancer knows we’re here. He is waiting.”
ur second Battle Report this month is inspired by the war of souls that seems to be escalating between Nagash and the myriad races of the Mortal Realms. As the Supreme Lord of the Undead seeks to master the underworlds of Shyish and claim the souls that reside there for his own, the forces of Order, Chaos and
Destruction fight to stop him. Yet the Idoneth Deepkin have another motive for stopping Nagash claiming the souls of the dead – they want them for themselves. And that’s what this
Battle Report is all about. The Idoneth Deepkin have found one of Nagash’s soul siphons deep within the realm of Shyish and are now trying to steal the souls bound within it for their own uses. Nagash, of course, is not keen on their plan and has set out to stop them.
For this game we used the Ritual scenario from the Warhammer Age of Sigmar book (page 162), but adapted it for our battlefield (which we featured in last month’s Battleground article). The Idoneth Deepkin would have to get Maughan the Soulscryer to the soul siphon, where – aided by the other Isharann – he would begin the soul extraction ritual. Sam
Pearson from the Design Studio would be taking command of the Idoneth Deepkin in their first Battle Report, while Martyn would be in command of Nagash’s undead legions. They deployed their armies (see over the page) and prepared themselves for battle…
O
MARTYN LYON
Martyn loves a game of Warhammer Age of Sigmar and Nagash is one of his favourite Citadel miniatures of all time. You can probably see why he wanted to play in this battle.
SAM PEARSON
Sam is the newest member of the games development team and wrote the Duels of the Crystal Labyrinth
minigame in this issue. He was very excited to fght his frst Battle Report.

Martyn: My vision for an army of Death is rank upon rank of Skeletons, so I built my army around three big units of them. I also wanted to try out some of the new units in the Legions of Nagash book – particularly the Bloodseeker Palanquin and Prince Vhordrai – which gave me the idea of fielding lots of Vampires to defend Nagash’s soul siphon.

THE HIGH KING’S SOUL HUNTERS
Sam: I picked my army from the Studio collection, taking
something of everything so I could get a feel for the new army. I organised most of the force into three Warscroll Battalions, giving me access to loads of interesting artefacts. Aside from winning the game, my main goal was to give Nagash a bad case
of the Brain Barnacles.
