considerations
When youassignanOpenVMShosttoa specificstorageunitadapterport, ensure thatyou donotassignanyotherhost typetothesamestorageunitadapter.Donot allow anyotherhostthatisnotassignedto thatadaptertoaccessthe
OpenVMS-specificstorageunitadapterport.
Using fabriczoning, youmustcreateazonestrictly forOpenVMShosts. The storageunitfibre-channeladapterportto whichyouassignedastorageunithost must resideexclusivelywithinthisOpenVMSzone.Failuretoensurethisexclusivity mightcauseanOpenVMShosttohang. Ifthisoccurs, youmustrebootthe

OpenVMS
UDID
Support
Each OpenVMSfibre-attachedvolumerequiresa user-definedidentifieror unit device identifier(UDID).Thisisanonnegativeintegerthatisusedinthecreationof theOpenVMSdevice name.Allfibre-attachedvolumeshaveanallocationclassof
$1, followedbytheletters,DGA, followedbytheUDID.AllstorageunitLUNs thatyou assign toanOpenVMSsystemmust haveaUDIDsothattheoperating systemcan detectandname thedevice. LUN0alsomust havea UDID;however,thesystem displays LUN0 as$1GGA<UDID>,notas$1DGA<UDID>.SeetheHPdocument,
Guidelinesfor OpenVMSClusterConfigurationsfor moreinformationabout fibre-attachedstoragedevices.
You canusetheIBMTotalStorageDSStorageManageror theDS8000command line interface(DSCLI)to setavalueina storageunit volumenamefield thatis used byAlphaServersystemsastheUDIDfor thevolume. (Inthis document,we provide DSCLI examples.)You canfindtheDSCLI ontheCDthatyoureceive withthestorageunit.SeetheIBMTotalStorageDS8000Command-Line Interface User’s Guideformoreinformation.
TheDSCLIisageneralpurposeutilitythatsupports variousstorageunitfunctions. TheDSCLIallows16alphanumericcharactersasinputwhenyoucompletethe storageunitvolume namefield.OpenVMSUDIDvalues mustbeanintegerwithin
therangeof 0to 32767.Therefore,youmust ensurethattheinput isvalidfor UDID support.TheutilitydoesnotenforceUDIDrules.It acceptsvalues, suchas
AaBbCcDd,thatarenotvalidforOpenVMS.Itispossibleto assignthesameUDID
valueto multiplestorageunitvolumes. However, each volumethatyouassignto an OpenVMSsystem musthave avaluethatisuniquefor thatsystemorthroughout theOpenVMSclusterto whichthatsystembelongs.ReviewtheHPOpenVMS documentation forUDIDrules, andverifythatyourinputisvalid.
Note: VolumeswithUDIDsgreaterthan 9999cannotbeMSCP-servedinan

LUN
ThestorageunitassignsLUNnumbersusingthelowestavailablenumber.Thefirst storageunitvolume thatisassignedto ahostisLUN0, thenext volumeisLUN1, andsoon.Whenastorageunitvolume isunassigned,thesystemreusestheLUN numberthatit hadwhenassigninganothervolumeto thathost.
TobecompatiblewithOpenVMS,thestorageunitvolumethatbecomesLUN0for anOpenVMSsystemisinterpretedastheCommandConsoleLUN(CCL),or pass-through LUN.Thestorageunitdoes notsupportCCLcommandfunctions. This storageunitvolume(LUN0for OpenVMS)doesnotdisplaywhenyouissue
the wwidmgr -show wwidAlphaServer consolecommand. WhenOpenVMS is
runninganda UDIDhasbeen setfor thatstorageunitvolume, thestorageunit volume LUN0displaysasaGGAdevice type, notasaDGAdevice.Although OpenVMS doesnotstrictly requireaUDIDfortheCCL, theSHOWDEVICEcommand displays CCLdevicecreationif yousetaUDID.Youcandisplaythemultiplepaths and diagnosefailedpathsto thestoragecontrollerusingtheSHOWDEVICE/FULL
command.
Guidelines:Thefirst storageunit volumethatyouassignto anOpenVMSsystem can becomeLUN0.However, thevolume thatyou assignmustbeusedbythe system foronly supportcapabilityandmustbeattheminimumsize.Ahostcannot use thevolume foranyotherpurpose.MultipleOpenVMShosts, evenindifferent clusters, thataccessthesamestorageunit, canshare thesamestorageunit volume asLUN0, becausetherewillbenootheractivityto thisvolume.
At theAlphaServer console,when youissue thewwidmgr -showwwid command, LUN0 doesnotdisplay.Onlyfibre-channelstoragedevicesarelistedintheoutput. ThestorageunitLUN0ispresentedasaCCLdevice, andtherefore,isnotshown.
