Definición y ePiDemiología

Expulsión súbita, ruidosa y violenta de aire de los pulmones. Se trata de una respuesta refleja o voluntaria a la irritación de la las zonas tusígenas como mecanismo de defensa del aparato respiratorio. En Cuidados Paliativos, la tos plantea problemas cuando deja su papel protector y es causa de malestar por el síntoma en sí o por empeorar otros como dolor, insomnio o ser causa de nuevos problemas: cefaleas, síncopes, fracturas, etc.

Se trata de un síntoma que alcanza al 50% de los pacientes oncológicos y llega a afectar al 80% de los paciente con cáncer de pulmón o SIDA.
