When Moses led the people of God out of Egypt, God again demonstrated the power of the blood. This time, God showed us that the blood turns away even death. In Exodus 12:7 and 13, God instructed Moses to have the people kill a perfect lamb, one for each household of fifteen people, and to sprinkle its blood on the sideposts and lintel of the door. When the Angel of Death passed by, it did not enter any household with the blood so sprinkled, for God did not allow it to enter.
Death is an enemy. The Bible says that Jesus will sit at the right hand of the Father until all of His enemies are put under his feet. "For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet. The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death" (1 Cor. 15:25-26).
Life defeats death. The Bible says that the life is in the blood—not the heart, kidneys, or brains (Lev. 17:11, 14). The life of Jesus is in His blood. It is the life in the blood that turns back death.
Only God´s perfect Passover Lamb, Jesus Christ, will do. It is His blood that protects us from death and gives us everlasting life. His blood compels death to pass over. No fig leaves or fruits will do it—no good works—just faith, the grace of God, and the blood of the Lamb.
It Atones
It is the blood that atones for the soul.
For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
(Lev. 17:11) That is why God so strongly admonished the people against eating or drinking blood. Blood is precious. One cannot disrespect it or look upon it in a trivial manner.
God will not allow it because one day, His beloved Son would shed His blood for mankind and wash away the veil between the Father and us.
The blood atones or covers sin. Hebrews 9:22 says,
"Without shedding of blood is no remission [of sins]."
Without His shed blood, we would be forever doomed.
It Saves
God took careful steps to teach us about the saving power of the blood. Rahab, the harlot who along with her family was saved from destruction, was instructed to tie a scarlet thread on her window. When Jericho´s walls fell, only Rahab´s house was spared. No lamb was available, so the spies used a scarlet thread. That scarlet thread represented blood. It saved Rahab and her entire family.
It was the crucifixion of Jesus Christ the Son of God that tore the veil between God and man and brought reconciliation (Rom. 5:10; 2 Cor. 5:18). Now, we call Him Abba Father, and He calls us sons and daughters.
The blood made it possible for the prodigal sons to come home. It saves!
It Heals
In the Old Testament, the prescribed way to cleanse a leper was to place the blood of a lamb on his right ear,
thumb, and big toe. The blood cleansed the people of all types of diseases. To those in the flesh, it had to be one of the strangest ways to heal sickness, but to God it was the only way. It was a type and shadow for those of us today who believe in Jesus Christ.
It is the blood that heals, and it continues to do so today. It comes from the Son who sits at the right hand of the Father. The Bible promises that we are healed by His stripes (Isa. 53:5; 1 Pet. 2:24). Thirty-nine stripes slashed His back, and the cruel whip with a piece of bone at the end tore His flesh and ripped it apart. Under Roman law, a man could not be whipped more than forty times, and if the person administering the whipping exceeded that amount, he would in turn be punished severely. Therefore, to make sure that forty strips was not exceeded accidentally, they stopped at thirty-nine.
Medical books separate all types of disease and sickness into thirty-nine categories. It is no coincidence that the number of stripes on His back was thirty-nine. It
´s the blood from the stripes that heals. Jesus sits in glory at the right hand of the Father, but His blood still heals on earth. Its power can never be lost.
It Consecrates
The priests in Moses´ day were ordained by placing blood on their right ears, hands, and feet. The blood cleansed them of sin and set them apart for service unto God. God designated the tribe of Levi for priestly duties.
Not all Levites were priests, but all priests were Levites.
Those called to service in the temple were consecrated by the blood. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, sits at the
right hand of the Father. He consecrated Himself for service unto the Father and all of mankind. It is His blood that consecrates and sets aside those who desire to serve through the blood.
