The Environmental Economics program studies economic questions that relate to environmental externalities and sustainable development. It seeks to combine scientific and policy relevance. The program is economic in nature but explicitly recognizes the necessity to integrate economics with insights from other disciplines, notably natural sciences. The research can be divided into four core themes, indicated by the key words 'dematerialization', evolution, globalization, and nature policy. These cover a number of specific elements. Examples are:
• Theoretical and empirical analyses of physical flows through the economy to derive policy suggestions with regard to structural (sectoral) change, waste treatment, recycling and dematerialization.
• Evaluating and improving measures of sustainability, such as green and sustainable national income.
• Evolutionary modeling to understanding the nature, composition and stages in transitions to a sustainable energy provision.
• Attention is given to spatial and international dimensions, such as regional
sustainability and sustainable trade, and Porter-type advantages in an international setting.
• Use of nature and resources is studied, which covers biodiversity in wetlands, climate change and insurance, overexploitation of common pool resources, and monetary valuation of ecosystem management schemes.
• Evolutionary economics is used to study common dilemma’s consisting of multiple groups. This is relevant to enhance sustainable exploitation of natural resources like fisheries, forests, water and grazing lands.
