Course Information
1 Type of Course Training and Assessment. 2 Course Duration (Ratio) 5 x days. (1:2)
3 Course Aim The aims of the AMI Cse are to train and assess the skills required to conduct high level Alpine Mountaineering on AD terrain.
5 Assessment Criteria Written exam and practical assessment on all key objectives on Alpine climbing routes at AD grade with two novices.
6 Pre-Course Qualifications MLS (ALS recommended), RCI, WML, WCL and AIT. 7 Pre-Course Exemption Nil.
8 Pre-Course Experience
Student should have completed 30 x Alpine QMDs with a minimum of 5 days glacial travel. Routes completed on all Alpine Mountaineering coursescan be included in this count. Aspirancy time completed with JMG or BMG is highly recommended.
9 Delivery Type 4 AMIs, JMGs, HBFs or BMGs.
Course Remit, Limitations and Currency
10 Conditions/Remit (Operating as
Equals)
AMIs can climb as equals with other AMTs (PD) or AMLs, AITs, AMIs, JMGs, HBF and BMGs on technical ground commensurate with the team's capability and experience.
11 Remit (Led Groups)
AMIs can: - Lead teams on non technical terrain up to F+ with a maximum ratio of 1:4. - Lead teams on technical ground commensurate with the Group's capability and experience in sync with recommended guiding ratios (Ser 22). - Authorise exemption regarding JSP 419 qualifications in lieu of experience eg supervision (verbal communication) of a second roped party of 3 x AMFs on PD ground. - Provide SME advice regarding the JSAT Mountaineering Scheme.
12 Remit (DT) Deliver AMF as DT.
13 Qualification Expiry AMIs must conduct Continous Personal Development (CPD) in the form of 1 x day refresher training with a Type 4 Centre every 3 years.
14 Currency Students are required to maintain an Alpine Mountaineering log book. Membership of the Service Mountaineering Club is recommended.
ALPINE MOUNTAIN INSTRUCTOR (AMI)

3 Course Aim The aim of the JMG qualification is to fulfill the role of a UIAA approved Joint
Service SME in all aspects of Alpine Mountaineering and Skiing.
5 Assessment Criteria Successful completion of all JSAT Mountaineering and Skiing awards and
experience requirements.
6 Pre-Course Qualifications ALS, RCI, WML, WCI, AMI, SMI, AAC and MREC. 7 Pre-Qualification Exemption JMG has a strict non exemption policy, however, there is a single Service and
NGB equivalency matrix. 8 Pre-Course Experience
JMGs require the following logbook experience: - 30 multipitch rock climbs at VS standard. - 30 multipitch ice climbs (10 x Scottish Grade 3 or above).
9 Qualifications Endorsement Endorsement from the JMG Committee based at JSMTC.
