Benefits

For 2008, the 5 Series’ redesigned interior enhances both comfort and luxury via new materials and revised controls. These include: • The power windows’ control panel has been moved to the armrest, where it’s even more accessible than before.

• Wood trim now accents the lower dash and blends into the door panels, giving them a richer, warmer appearance.

• Interior door handles are more compact, and leather wrapped.

• The console is now leather-wrapped, and includes a small-item tray.

• Radio and climate-control knobs are finished in titanium silver, which adds the perfect modern accent to the wood and leather instrument panel.

• The iDrive adds a row of six programmable “favorites” buttons below the CD player. These can be used to access auto-dial phone numbers, navigation destinations or radio-station presets.

• The iDrive controller now includes a soft- touch leather accent.

• A new ashtray is more conveniently placed, and takes up less console space.

• The STEPTRONICautomatic includes an

electronic shifter like that introduced on the 2007 X5. The shifter features instantaneous response via its “shift-by-wire” design, and utilizes a similar shift function to the X5’s, with fingertip selection for Park and inline actuation for Reverse and Drive. The Sport and STEPTRONICfunctions are actuated much as before, by angling the shifter toward the driver for Sport mode, then tipping it forward or back to select higher or lower gears.

A new steering wheel replaces the original. Multi-function buttons remain for audio tuning & volume, phone operation (when equipped) and a programmable feature button.

Standard iDrive now includes a row of six favorites buttons, which can be used to access owner stored information

such as radio-station presets, or when so equipped, navigation destinations or phone numbers.

Passenger side cupholder slides from its dashboard position with a single push.

New door pulls are wrapped in soft leather, and relocated window

switches now reside on the armrest.

Part of the Sport Package or a stand-alone option, Multi-contour seats offer 20-way adjustment. Active head restraints, which

move forward to cradle the occupant’s head in a rear- end collision, are part of the Multi-contour seats. Standard seats include

10-way adjustment on 528i/xi, with optional 4-way adjustable lumbar support. Uplevel cars include 4-way lumbar support as stan- dard, for a total of 14-way adjustment. Shown in optional Crème Beige Dakota leather.

With a thorough rethinking of the interior, the 2008 5 Series offers even more convenience and refinement than before. More luxurious materials, including more extensive wood trim and additional leather, provide a more satisfying environment for driver and passengers. Visual and tactile enhancements abound, from details such as the leather accent on the iDrive controller to the leather-wrapped door handles and console.

By eliminating the mechanical connections to the STEPTRONICtransmission, the electronic shifter allowed a complete revision of the console area with an emphasis on conven- ience and small-item storage. A new ashtray and small-item tray are complemented by the larger compartments in the front doors, giving driver and front passenger alike a wider range of places for “stuff.” The new door panels also include relocated window switches, which are now placed on the armrest for a more convenient reach.

Even with the detail revisions, the 5 Series interior still maintains the same luxurious feel and open, airy atmosphere of the original. The dual-wave upper dash remains an elegant interpretation of the luxury car cockpit, while the overall instrument panel retains its emphasis on driver accessibility for information and major controls. The 3-spoke steering wheel – either standard or Sport – contains buttons for the audio and Bluetooth phone functions, and is flanked by stalks for turn signals, tilt/telescoping wheel, and cruise-control functions.

The 5 Series rear seat includes comfortable seat- ing for three, with plenty of leg and headroom.

Optional Dakota leather covers seats and door panels, with genuine wood trim standard.

For the driver, Instrumentation remains at a glance, with the primary tachometer and speedometer flanking a display of secondary graphics. The high-mounted iDrive monitor provides instant visual access to the informa- tion display, and audio and climate controls are a finger’s reach away. Options such as the Head-up Display, Lane Departure Warning and Night Vision also adhere to this philosophy, by providing quick visual acquisition of graphic displays.

Standard seating for all 5 Series sedans includes power seats with memory for both driver and front passenger. In the 528i/xi, these include 10-way adjustments; 535i/xi and 550i models add 4-way adjustable lumbar support, for a total of 14-way adjustability. On 6-cylinder models, standard leatherette provides a supple, comfortable seating surface, which can be upgraded to optional Dakota leather (standard on the 550i). Optional seating also includes Multi-contour seats, which offer a full 20-way range of adjustment, including articulated backrests and thigh support. The passenger compartment also gives a welcoming environment for non-driving 5 Series occupants, beginning with the open, airy feel of both front and rear seat areas. The front passenger has easy access to the generously sized glove compartment, and rear passengers

can use either the rear door compartments or the seatback pockets to store personal items. Head and legroom are both among the highest in the class, ensuring that 5 Series passengers – front or rear – will be as comfortable as the driver. The equally ergonomically positioned switchgear allows rear seat passengers the same convenient access to window switches or rear climate control adjustments.

The 5 Series Sedans also provide a generous 14 cubic feet of trunk space, easily accessed via a trunklid mounted release or from the keyless remote. The fully carpeted space includes tie-down hooks and, on vehicles with no spare tire, that space can be utilized for additional small-item storage.

The Sedans’ optional split- folding rear seats provide access to the trunk via a 60/40 split seatback.

Folding center section also provides a trunk pass-through for skis or other long items.

Roomy sedans’ trunk is fully carpeted, and provides 14 cubic feet of cargo space. Movable floor panel provides access to spare tire or additional small-item storage.
