Appendix 2a Case Ascertainment by Cancer Network: England

Case ascertainment is the number of cases recorded by place first seen compared to the number expected for 2005 in rank order. The information on expected number has been obtained from the Cancer Registries. Although this can be calculated on a network basis, data at individual hospital level cannot be calculated until most hospitals within a network have participated in the audit for a full year. As this analysis is by place first seen any data submitted with an ‘unknown’ place first seen has been excluded as it was impossible to allocate these 1,864 cases to a network. Often this means data submitted by tertiary centres are under reported. This emphasises the importance of all trusts within a network submitting their data to the audit.

Please note that the WCISU figures represent only the registrations made by trusts, the all Wales lung cancer incidence for 2004 registered from all sources is 2,248. Thus on a direct comparison to the English data case ascertainment is 71 per cent for all Welsh trusts.

Appendix 2c Data completeness England

Data completeness refers to whether or not a data value has been entered into specific fields within the LUCADA database. The target is 90 per cent or above for each of the key data fields described in the following table. For 2005 the field completeness levels were measured at the end of June 2006, six months after the latest date first seen within the cohort. The reason for this is that close monitoring shows that levels of completeness, particularly for treatment fields, rose significantly in the six months after the last recorded date first seen. The results illustrate what the best performing trusts can achieve and have been taken into account in setting the target fields for completeness for 2006/07.

The table overleaf shows, for 2005

• The number of cases submitted to LUCADA by place first seen.

• Percentage completeness for each of seven significant data fields, including the three key fields entered locally on which risk-adjustment will be based.

Notes

• Hospitals included are those where 25 or more cases were submitted during 2005. • Percentage completeness was measured at the end of June 2006.

• In these analyses a data field coded as ‘not known’ was counted as complete (In the figures shown in chapter 8 not known was excluded for the completeness calculation hence the two figures are not directly comparable).

• As each case is recorded by place first seen, tertiary centres are under represented in this analysis.

• Sites not yet participating in the audit (i.e. not submitting data) may still be represented in this analysis if their data has been submitted by another hospital. For example, a tertiary centre may enter the entire patient journey data, including the hospital of place first seen even if this hospital is not participating. • 1,864 cases of lung cancer recorded on LUCADA (with pathway dates in 2005) were excluded from the

The majority of these records would have been submitted by treatment centres which may not have had information about where the patient was first seen. Accordingly the fields recording patient pathway information (black text) are poorly completed compared to the records with date first seen recorded. However, treatment data are well (grey text) recorded and indeed treatment rates would be higher if it had been possible to include these data in the overall analysis.
