The great thing about making beauty products in your kitchen is that you will already have many of the tools you need to get started right away. The measurements given here for weighing and measuring equipment are imperial and suitable for the United States.
Measuring cups: You will need a set of both “liquid” and “dry” measuring cups. Look for liquid measuring cups made from tempered glass that are marked with easy-to-read quantity indicators in ounces, cups, and milliliters.
Open handles are important for safe gripping and pouring. Your liquid glass measuring cups should be microwaveable, as well as oven- and dishwasher-safe. Standard sizes for liquid measuring cups are: 1-cup (which holds 8 fl uid ounces), 2-cup (which holds 16 fl uid ounces), and 4-cup (which holds 32 fl uid ounces). Having at least two 1-cup glass measuring cups is a good starting point for your collection.
Dry measuring cups come in standard sizes of 1⁄4-cup, 1⁄3-cup,
1⁄2-cup, and 1-cup capacity. You can also fi nd odd-measure sizes that come in 2⁄3-cup, 3⁄4-cup, and 11⁄2-cup capacities. Choose cups made from a durable and dishwasher-safe material such as stainless steel, hard plastic, or melamine.
Measuring spoons: A good-quality set of measuring spoons made from a dishwasher-safe
material, such as stainless steel, melamine, or plastic, is a good choice for measuring small amounts of raw ingredients. Measuring spoons come in “standard-measure” and “odd-measure” sizes.
Look for the following sizes: 1⁄8 teaspoon, 1⁄4 teaspoon, 1⁄2 teaspoon,
1⁄2 tablespoon, and 1 tablespoon measurements. Measuring spoons with “dash,” “smidgen,” and “pinch” measurements are available too. A “dash” is the same as 1⁄8 teaspoon. A “smidgen” is 1⁄16
teaspoon. A “pinch” is 1⁄32 teaspoon.
Scales: Scales are very important and convenient when exact ingredient measurements are
required. Most scales can weigh in both ounces and in grams. A good-quality scale
will have a tare feature, which enables you to weigh multiple ingredients into
a single container. Battery-operated digital scales are the most accurate.
Mortars and pestles: A mortar and pestle is an important tool for crushing seeds and herbs, mashing fruit, and combining essential oils into dry ingredients such as clays. You should buy a mortar and pestle made from granite or nonporous porcelain. It is not advisable to purchase the ones made from wood, as they can absorb essential oils.
Food grinders: A small spice and nut grinder is a wonderful way to grind whole spices, nuts, oatmeal, dried fl owers, sugars, and salts. You can fi nd both electric models and ones that are hand-cranked.
Cutting boards: Commonly made from wood, plastic, marble, and even stone, you can use a cutting board to chop ingredients for recipes.
Many folks keep a designated and separate cutting board just for their beauty recipes.
Cooking utensils: This category includes whisks, stirring spoons, slotted spoons, skimmers, spatulas, ladles, and other task-specifi c utensils used to prepare
beauty recipes. You can fi nd cooking utensils made from silicone, plastic, ceramic, and nonreactive stainless steel. They need to be dishwasher-safe and heat-resistant.
Thermometers: These can be purchased as either digital or regular models.
Thermometers are useful for determining the temperature of liquids.
Pipettes and droppers: Made of either glass or plastic, these are useful when measuring small amounts of essential oils into liquid ingredients. The most common sizes are 1ml and 3ml.
Wooden chopsticks: These are wonderful and economically priced tools that work well as stirring sticks. They are a good choice when mixing small amounts.
Herb tools: Many recipes call for the addition of fresh and/or dried herbs.
Some optional herb tools that may prove convenient include: herb-snipping scissors, herb choppers, and herb mills. If you want to dry your own herbs from the garden, a food dehydrator may be useful.
Graters: These are the perfect tool for grating beeswax. Choose a dishwasher-safe grater that has razor-sharp, stainless-steel teeth and a comfortable grip handle.
Silicone molds: These come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are useful when making solid lotion bars and fi zzy bath bombs. They are made from pliable silicone for easy product removal.
Saucepans and double boilers: Stainless steel is a good choice when choosing a saucepan or double boiler. You will fi nd many recipes calling for a double boiler to melt waxes and oils together. You will also enjoy using a double boiler to soften stiff butters such as shea butter and cocoa butter for easy blending.
Mixing bowls: You can never have too many mixing bowls in the kitchen. A good choice is either stainless steel or tempered glass, which are suitable for both hot and cold ingredients, as well as for using with a hand-held mixer. Having at least one of each of the following or similar sizes is a good start for your collection: small mixing bowl
(7-inch diameter/11⁄2-quart capacity);
medium mixing bowl (8-inch diameter/3-quart capacity); and large mixing bowl (10-inch diameter/5-quart capacity).
Tea kettles: Great for boiling water to make herbal infusions.
Timers: Useful when timing herbal infusions and decoctions.
Funnels and strainers: Funnels are the perfect tool for transferring your fi nished liquid products into narrow-mouthed storage containers such as bottles and jars.
Fine-mesh strainers are good at straining liquid from herbs.
Hand-held mixer, blender, food-processor, and immersion blenders: Mixing creams and lotions is easy with a hand-held mixer, blender, and immersion blender. A food-processor comes in handy when mixing facial masks, and salt and sugar scrubs.
A food-processor can also be used to fi nely grind oatmeal, salts, and sugars.
Safety glasses: These provide protection for your eyes. They are useful when mixing ingredients and keeping essential oils and other ingredients from splashing or spraying into your eyes.
Disposable gloves: These can protect your hands from essential oils and other ingredients.
Aprons: Protect your clothing from splashes, spills, and stains.
