Disconnect the manual gearbox from the engine (see Manual gearbox: Removal - Refitting) (21A, Manual gearbox).
Disconnect the automatic gearbox from the engine (see Automatic gearbox: Removal - Refitting) (23A, Automatic transmission).
Position the engine on the component support (see 10A, Engine and cylinder block assembly, Engine support equipment: Use, page 10A-19) .
Remove the cylinder head (see Cylinder head: Re-moval - Refitting) .
Strip down the cylinder head, if required by the check (see 10A, Engine and cylinder block assembly, Cyl-inder head: Stripping - Rebuilding, page 10A-57) . Before any checks:
- clean the cylinder head (see 10A, Engine and cylin-der block assembly, Cylincylin-der head: Cleaning, page 10A-64) ,
- check that the cylinder head does not have any scratches, any traces of impact or abnormal wear (if necessary replace the cylinder head).
II - CAMSHAFT CHECKING OPERATION
1 - Checking the height of the cylinder head
Use a mortice gauge, or a depth gauge to measure the height (H) of the cylinder head which should be 124.8 mm.
Equipment required component support
mortice gauge depth gauge cylinder head rule set of feeler gauges internal micrometer cylinder head testing tools external micrometer
IMPORTANT
To avoid all risk of damage to the systems, apply the safety and cleanliness instructions and opera-tion recommendaopera-tions before carrying out any repair:
- (see 10A, Engine and cylinder block assembly, Engine: Precautions for the repair, page 10A-1) ,
- (see Vehicle: Precautions for the repair) (01D, Mechanical introduction).
WARNING
It is strictly forbidden to apply any pressure to the engine oil sump. Damage to the sump will irrepara-bly damage the engine by:
- blocking the strainer,
- raising the oil level above maximum, with a risk of engine racing.

Use a mortice gauge, or a depth gauge to measure the height (H) of the cylinder head which should be 125 mm.
2 - Checking the flatness of the cylinder head
Use a ruler (1) and a « dial gauge - dial gauge support » assembly (2) or a cylinder head rule and a set of feeler gauges to check the flatness of the cylin-der head gasket face.
Cylinder head joint face maximum deformation: 0.1 mm.
3 - Checking the camshaft bearing diameters
Use a internal micrometer to measure the diameter (X1) of each camshaft bearing which should be:
- bearing No.1 (3) : 28 ±±±± 0.01 mm,
- bearings No.2, 3, 4 and 5 (4) : 25 ±±±± 0.01 mm.
Use a internal micrometer to measure the diameter (X1) of each camshaft bearing which should be:
- bearing No.1 (3) : 28.01 ±±±± 0.01 mm,
- bearings No.2, 3, 4 and 5 (4) : 25.01 ±±±± 0.01 mm.

4 - Check the diameter of the valve guide
Use a internal micrometer to measure the diameters (X2) of the valve guides which should be:
- inlet: 5 ±±±± 0.1 mm, - exhaust: 5.5 ±±±± 0.1 mm.
Use a internal micrometer to measure the diameters (X2) of the valve guides which should be:
- inlet: 5 ±±±± 0.1 mm, - exhaust: 5 ±±±± 0.1 mm.
5 - Cylinder head testing
Test the cylinder head for any cracks using the cylin-der head testing tools (see Cylincylin-der head test tank:
Use) (Technical Note 6026A, 11A, Top and front of en-gine).
III - CHECKING THE MECHANICAL TAPPET
1 - Check the external diameter of the tappets
Check the condition of the tappet (worn or coating cracked (5) )
Use a external micrometer to measure the outer di-ameter (X3) of the tappets which should be between 29.98 and 29.99 mm.

2 - Checking the housing in the cylinder head
Use a internal micrometer to measure the diameter (X4) of the housings of the tappets in the cylinder head which should be between 30 and 30.02 mm.
3 - Checking the clearance between the tappet and the housing in the cylinder head
Measure:
- the internal diameter (X4) of the tappet housing using a internal micrometer,
- the external diameter (X3) of the tappet using a exter-nal micrometer.
The actual clearance = internal diameter (X4) of the tappet housing - external diameter (X3) of the tappet.
The clearance between the tappet and the housing in the cylinder head should be 0.01 to 0.04 mm.
IV - FINAL OPERATION
Rebuild the cylinder head, if necessary (see 10A, En-gine and cylinder block assembly, Cylinder head:
Stripping - Rebuilding, page 10A-57) .
Refit the cylinder head (see Cylinder head: Removal - Refitting) .
Remove the engine from component support (see 10A, Engine and cylinder block assembly, Engine support equipment: Use, page 10A-19) .
Connect the manual gearbox to the engine (see Manu-al gearbox: RemovManu-al - Refitting) (21A, ManuManu-al gear-box).
Connect the automatic gearbox to the engine (see Au-tomatic gearbox: Removal - Refitting) (23A, Auto-matic gearbox).
Refit the « engine and gearbox » assembly (see En-gine - gearbox assembly: Removal - Refitting) .

- clean the cylinder head (see 10A, Engine and cylin-der block assembly, Cylincylin-der head: Cleaning, page 10A-64) ,
- Check for possible scratches or damage caused by an impact on the surface of the cylinder head.
II - CHECKING THE CYLINDER HEAD
1 - Cylinder head height
The cylinder head height (H) is 125 mm.
2 - Deformation of the surface of the cylinder head gasket check
Using the cylinder head rule and a set of feeler gauges, measure the cracks in the surface of the cylin-der head gasket.
The limit value is 0.1 mm.
If the limit value is exceeded, replace the cylinder head.
Equipment required cylinder head rule
set of feeler gauges
