Annual Report of the Faculty Development Advisory Committee
MEMORANDUM
To: Dr. Raymond Alden III
Executive Vice-President and Provost
From: Paula Frasz, Professor, School of Theatre and Dance Chair, Faculty Development Advisory Committee
Re: Annual Report of the Faculty Development Advisory Committee Date: May 8, 2007
This is a brief report on the activities of the Faculty Development Advisory Committee (FDAC) during 2007 and the committee’s recommendations for your consideration. During 2006-2007, the committee held a total of 6 meetings (4 general and two subcommittee meetings), discussed the programs and activities of the Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center, and provided feedback to Murali Krishnamurthi, Director of Faculty Development.
Several members of the committee participated in faculty development programs organized by the Center during 2006-2007. Committee members Byron Anderson (University Libraries), Karen Carrier (Literacy Education), Judi Hertz (Nursing), and I served on the Faculty
Development Grants review subcommittee, and David Ballantine (Chemistry and Biochemistry), Gyu Kim (Operations Management and Information Systems), Andrew Otieno (Technology), Joe Scudder (Communication), and I served on the Outstanding TA award review
subcommittees. Joe Scudder also contributed to the Personal Response System selection process and he will also be presenting in the May 21st Teaching with Technology Institute organized by the Center. The committee as a whole was instrumental in recommending one personal response system for campuswide use at NIU.
The Grant Review Subcommittee of the FDAC reviewed proposals for the July – December 2006 and January – June 2007 cycle of faculty development grants and attached is a list of faculty recommended for faculty development grants by the subcommittee. The committee appreciates the Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center’s effort in making these grants available to faculty in spite of the budget challenges.
The committee received regular reports including the Center’s Annual Report 2005-2006 from Murali Krishnamurthi, and the committee appreciates his commitment to addressing faculty, SPS, and TA needs, and the coordination of the various programs and services by the Center staff. The committee would like to congratulate the Center on another year of successful faculty development through its teaching, technology integration, diversity, development, research, and mentoring programs. The committee is also pleased to note the Center will be training faculty on many new technologies this coming year including Clickers, Content System and Smart Panels.
The committee would like to express its appreciation to you for your support of the Center and would like to recommend the following for your consideration:
1. The committee was informed that instructors would like to be eligible for faculty
development grants currently offered to tenured and tenure-track faculty by the Center. The committee unanimously voted in its May 2, 2007 meeting that the faculty development grants be available only to tenured and tenure faculty at this time due to the unique responsibilities of our positions and the need for professional development required for personnel actions, new course development, and research and scholarly activities. Attached please find the revised faculty development grant description statement approved by the committee.
2. As the Center supports faculty development grants solely through its operating budget and not through any special allocation or endowment and as the funds available for faculty are already very limited, the committee considers making instructors eligible for the grants will serve neither the faculty nor the instructor body. The committee understands the need for professional development opportunities for instructors and recommends the allocation of separate professional development funds through HRS or other funding sources similar to SPS Development grants to meet the professional development needs of instructors.
3. The committee recommends increasing the Center’s operating budget to meet the increase in equipment and software costs necessary for supporting a 12-station training facility and a 6- station digital multimedia studio, and the increase in program costs due to increase in participation of faculty, staff, and TAs and the range of programs offered by the Center. As the Center is currently meeting the mentioned increase in expenses by decreasing the faculty development grants awarded, the committee is concerned the grants could be completely eliminated at this rate by the coming fiscal year. As the Center has already terminated the Research Mentoring Program due to lack of funds this year, the committee would like you to increase the Center’s budget and help to continue faculty development grants.
4. The committee would like to convey the need for a computer-based testing facility expressed by faculty members from several colleges. Such a facility is very much needed at NIU for students in lower division courses to take computerized tests at individual workstations and to overcome the space constraints of regular classrooms which lead to cheating.
The committee appreciates Provost’s staff participating in faculty development programs and presenting certificates to participants and faculty appreciate seeing you at these programs.
I would like to thank all the members of the Faculty Development Advisory Committee for their enthusiastic participation in the committee and their contributions to faculty development
activities during 2006-2007. I would like to express my personal appreciation for the
opportunity to chair the Faculty Development Advisory committee this year and interact with committee members and the staff of the Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center.
If you have any questions about the report or need more information about the committee’s activities or recommendations, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or at 753-5501.
