European Research Area network which aims to support research and innovation in the field of organic food and farming systems through enhanced cooperation and coordination between EU member and associated states.
Fund Information
Funding body: European Commission
Application deadline: 04-11-2019 Extended Description
The ERA-NET Cofund 'Coordination of European Transnational Research in Organic Food and Farming Systems' (CORE Organic) is the continuation of the ERA-Nets CORE Organic I, II and Plus. It is coordinated by the International Centre for Research in Organic Food
Systems (ICROFS) in Denmark and is scheduled to run from 2017 to 2021. It is administrated under Horizon 2020 Societal Challenge H2020-SC2 (Food security,
sustainable agriculture and forestry, marine and maritime and inland water research, and the Bioeconomy).
The overall objective of CORE Organic is to enhance quality, relevance and utilisation of resources in European research in organic food and farming. European public research and development effort in this area is characterised by small research communities, often scattered and fragmented both geographically and institutionally. This generates a need for gathering the dispersed expertise into a critical mass, to maintain and increase the competitive quality and relevance of research.
The programme's activities will aim to update and consolidate the series of transnational research calls that support the research and innovation necessary to address the most important challenges along the organic value chains, eg increasing the organic production potentials, enhancing resource efficiency, and improving animal welfare. Research will also feed into adapting to the new EU regulations on Organic Farming.
The updated CORE Organic Cofund consortium consists of 25 partners from 19 countries. Eligibility Criteria
Eligible applicants are institutions that are involved in research / innovation and operate in accordance with national
rules, including companies.
Research consortia must comprise of a minimum of three independent legal entities from a minimum of three different partner countries participating with funding in the specific topic.
Applicants must be eligible under the Call requirements and satisfy the criteria and
conditions of the relevant national funding body. Eligibility criteria may vary even between national funding bodies and it is, therefore, mandatory for each applicant to also consider the national regulations of their funding body.

The maximum budget that can be requested from CORE Organic funds is €1.5 million per research proposal including the coordination costs. In-kind contributions may be added on top of this amount.
Match Funding Restrictions
It is anticipated that co-funding will be required, although this will vary as per the individual regulations of national funding organisations participating in the call.

Application start

Application end date: 04-11-2019
This Call will support research projects taking a system approach in the context of the following topics:
• Topic 1: Resource-efficient, circular and zero-waste food systems, considering, as far as possible, all relevant aspects in the food system and their potential to increase its sustainability.
• Topic 2: Diversity in food from field to plate. Promoting the diversity within food systems is crucial for ensuring healthy and sustainable diets, strengthening resilience and enhancing socio-economic and environmental benefits.
• Topic 3: Mild food processing. A significant number of valuable ingredients are destroyed during the processing of a food product, hence through mild food processing we aim to preserve the ingredients and to provide high quality, healthy and sustainable food (including organic) to the consumers.
• Topic 4: Sustainable and smart packaging. A major challenge food systems have to face is the increasing amount of plastic, and the need to prevent food waste and food loss. The idea underlying the development of smart packaging is to protect the food product and reduce waste before spoilage – e.g. by visualising the quality of food via packaging or by applying environmentally friendly resources.
A total of €9.48 million will be made available for this Call by 21 funding bodies, from 18 countries/regions. The requested funding cannot exceed €1.5 million per proposal. Note: some funders are only supporting specific topics.
The following countries are participating: Algeria, Belgium (Flanders), Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Morocco, Norway, Poland, Romania, Spain, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.
