The Canal Corridor Association preserves history, protects nature and open space, and creates destinations where people can learn and have fun in the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor, from Lake Michigan in Chicago to the Illinois River in LaSalle/Peru. It enhances, raises awareness of, and expands the parks, trails, landscapes, and historic sites that make the I&M Canal region a special place. In partnership with local, regional, state, and federal entities, the Association serves as an advocate for and has technical expertise in the areas of open space conservation, historic preservation, and heritage tourism. CCA also manages the Gaylord Building, a National Trust Historic Site, in Lockport, Illinois. One of the oldest industrial buildings in the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor, the Gaylord Building is a model of adaptive reuse, featuring the Public Landing restaurant, canal exhibits, and more.

The Economic and Community Development Department of the City of Mendota provides full-time staffing to be a responsive resource for local industry expansion and retention as well as for new industries interested in Mendota. A full-service industrial park is owned and promoted by the city. Tax increment financing; enterprise zone; and other local, state, and federal incentives and resources are brought together by the department to facilitate development. Other activities include grant writing and administration, data collection and dissemination, and workforce development. In conjunction with the local Chamber of Commerce, downtown revitalization and small business assistance are also areas of focus.

The Illinois Valley Area Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development (IVAC) serves the many needs of its business community. The areas served by IVAC include the following:

IVAC acts as a watchdog on state and national legislation affecting business. Seminars are offered to keep members informed on subjects of interest to the small business person. An up-to-date data bank including demographic, market, labor, and industrial/commercial site information allows a one-stop information source for prospective businesses. IVAC is the driving force behind the economic development of the Illinois Valley, including, but not limited to, retention of existing business and industry, attraction of new business and industry, improvement of transportation facilities, tourism promotion, and regional cooperation. IVAC administers the Illinois Valley Enterprise Zone and is the administrative agent for Illinois Valley Education to Careers Partnership.
