One of the greatest learning experiences I (Shawn) have had as a coach is to attend John’s Garage course. John’s Garage is modeled on Milton Erickson’s famous classes that took place in his converted garage (as does John’s). It’s a supervision course where one student plays the role of coach, another the role of client (using a real issue), and John ‘coaches the coach.’
This experience took place in the early days of my coaching. When it was my turn to be the ‘coach,’
my ‘client’ brought forth a truly deep and heart-rending issue to work through. I was deeply touched that she trusted me enough to share this issue with me as coach, but I was, for a moment, panicked by the thought, “Can I help her through this? What if I don’t know what to do?” Then I realized John was by my side, and I relaxed, knowing that if I got stuck John was there to help me help my client.
Before we begin this chapter, consider what it would be like if you can be coached by the greatest hypnotist of all time, whenever you wanted or needed it? How amazing would it be to know that Erickson, Elman, Tony Robbins – , or whoever comes to mind for you – is waiting patiently to coach you through anything you wanted? How easily would emotional turmoil fall away when you have the world’s greatest coach by your side? I wonder what type of amazing future lies ahead of you when you have this coach guiding you along the way, showing you how to step fully into your true, authentic self.
In this chapter we will be exploring how you can use DTI to build resiliency into your neurology. If you are doing this for yourself you are developing a tremendously valuable skill set. If you are a hypnotist, teaching this resiliency to a client, you can feel confident knowing that you are teaching your clients how to succeed well beyond the scope of the session.
When a new client comes in to see a coach or hypnotist for the first time, it is common for them to ask, "What if this doesn't work?" Even if they don't express this question at some level they may be thinking it. Occasionally the hypnotist may wonder this as well. While this is not a resourceful thought
loop for a hypnotist, the truth is that sometimes clients experience change in the short term, but that the old pattern reappears.
The good news is we can teach our clients skills so she is resilient. What would it be like if you were to experience a positive change, and also know going forward that whatever circumstances came your way, you had the skills and flexibility to think, feel, and act resourcefully? Resiliency training is one of the most valuable skills we can give to our clients or to ourselves.
The pattern we will be presenting in this chapter utilizes DTI in a new and powerful way. This pattern gives your clients the opportunity to truly become their own coach. You will be able to use this experience to reinforce the work you've done together, and to reinforce other positive changes your client’s experience. We hold the belief in NLP, that you have all of the resources you need. This pattern allows the client to develop those resources naturally. It also gives them the opportunity to experience on a deep level just how resourceful they are when it comes to resolving any issue, future as well as current.
When a person is stuck in a problem state it becomes difficult for them to see the forest for the trees.
While in the problem they may not feel particularly resourceful and may end up blocking their own ability to change. This is why in the meta-pattern (see NLP Mastery: The Meta Pattern by Sarah and Shawn Carson for a full discussion of this pattern, available at Amazon.com), we dissociate from the problem state before associating to the resource.
The pattern we describe in this chapter allows clients to dissociate naturally from their problems and immediately step into a position from which they have full access to all of their resources.
The pattern is as follows.
In trance associate into a specific time and place where you are experiencing a problem.
Invite into that space the model of your choosing. This can be anyone who could help you through the problematic experience; it does not need to be a formal coach, although of course it could be. If you could choose anyone to coach you into a better state, who would it be?
As with any DTI ask for permission from the model, making the purpose of the DTI clear before proceeding.
Next, as a consciousness, drift outside of yourself and into third position. You can see that you, down there, in that situation. And you can see the model by your side. In third position notice the model’s physiology, noticing the model’s breathing and posture. You will see your own physiology, the physiology of the ‘you’ down there, beginning to mirror your model.
When you're ready, drift into the model. Take a few moments to orient yourself by continuing to be aware of your posture, your breathing, and what it's like to see through these eyes, and hear through these ears. Become aware of your emotions: what are you feeling when you are this person? Notice all of the things you're aware of as the model.
What do you believe about yourself and the world when you are this person? What is important to you?
As the model, observe that other self (‘you’) in this specific context. See with the eyes of your model the behavior and the emotions the real you is expressing. What can you-as-model notice about you-as-you that is valuable in the problematic situation? What new things can you discern?
As the model, this totally resourceful person, you can help that ‘you’ over there to change her thoughts, feelings, and behavior. Perhaps you-as-model can remind you-as-you of all of the tools you have, perhaps leading you-as-you through a piece of change work. Please note when you're using this pattern with the client you can instruct the client-as-model on how to coach the client-as-client. Consider reminding the model of the effective techniques you use, and suggest the client-as-model use them on the client.
As the model, notice how the situation has now changed. You are most interested in how that other has changed. Look for the change in physiology that lets you know that other self has changed in a beneficial way. You are waiting to see their physiology mirror your own as model.
Once this shift has taken place, you could go to another time and place when the self experienced the same problem, and as the model begin the coaching process again. Repeat this as many times as necessary based on what feels right.
Now it is time to become your own best future coach. There will be a time in the future when that self may need the best coach in the world. And you-as-model can be there waiting to guide you through that context. And of course there may be another specific time and place in the future when that self could use a friendly coach. And there you-as-model are, ready with the perfect approach to help them change. If there are any other times in the future when this will be useful you-as-model can practice now coaching that future self.
When you are ready, return to that first time and place and dissociate from the model.
Drifting back into yourself, back into first position, take a moment to feel how things are now different. And as you feel that thank your model for all of the wonderful coaching they've given you.
As your coach already knows, there may be times in the future where you could really use some coaching. As yourself, go to one of those times in the future, now, and experience receiving that coaching. Your coach knows exactly how to make this different for you so
that you are left feeling confident in your natural ability to bounce back and be feeling exactly the right states.
Once you have finished the future pacing, return fully and completely to the here and now.
Future Pacing as Model and as Self
The future pace as both the model and self is an important aspect of this pattern because we are installing in the client a resiliency strategy. In fact, the client may find, after a few experiences of self-coaching, that their unconscious mind automatically brings out the resources they need in the specific context. We are conditioning resilient resourcefulness in the client’s unconscious mind.
To summarize the process:
As yourself, go to a specific context where the coaching is useful. And invite the model to join you
Dissociate from self, to third position, and observe the model. Take on the model’s posture and breathing.
Associate into the model and become fully oriented to their physiology, emotions, awareness, and thoughts/beliefs.
Observe that self (use client’s name) in the context and notice how it looks from the model's point of view.
As model, coach that self through that situation until you notice their physiology shift, and they enter a more resourceful state.
Repeat for several other times and places.
Future-pace coaching that self.
Dissociate from the model and associate back into self, thanking the model for the work they have done.
Go back to various contexts and feel how it has changed.
Future pace the coaching experience as self (so that the client has the opportunity to experience the coaching from the perspective of self).
Thank the model for the coaching and reorient to the here and now ending the trance.
Enjoy using this technique to install your own best coach in yourself. You know going forward that you have all the resources you need, and that these resources can express themselves in such wonderful ways such as being coached by your ideal model.
When using this pattern with clients you are creating an incredibly empowering experience for them.
They can know going forward that any time they need a coach it is only a matter of going into trance and enjoying the highly transformative experience of working with their own best coach.
