RIESGOS INHERENTES

Remember what I said at the beginning of the chapter about the two main types of danger: physical and occult. Most of what I wrote about in this chapter is quite effective against occult dangers from spirits or magickal attacks. Regu- lar magickal defensive practice is also good at diminishing physical accidents and can even be helpful in avoiding physical attacks. If, however, you are in a dire situation where someone is looking to harm or kill you physically, I would not rely upon purely protective measures for my defense. Although such situations are hopefully rare, they do happen, so our strategy would be incomplete if we did not cover some methods of dealing with these sorts of grim scenarios.

When confronted with an enemy who is either threatening physical vio- lence, or is going to persist in magickal attacks until one of them finally gets through your defenses, it is probably going to be necessary to take a more active role in defense than just the passive means we have discussed thus far. To this end, there are four main methods that can be used: to bind, confuse, expel, and counter-attack. As a matter of policy I only discuss direct counter attacks aimed at harming your attacker with personal students. It is not some- thing I feel comfortable putting in a book such as this, and besides, it should always be a last resort. The first three modes should more than suffice even in deadly situations.

Bindings

Bindings are used to stop someone from doing a particular thing or to heavily influence someone toward doing something, in our case leaving us and our loved ones or clients alone. Obviously the information in the chapter on influencing and persuasion magick is all applicable here. You should be able to make a good binding spell out of the information provided there, but just in case, here is an effective method:

Make or purchase a doll that represents your target. I like dolls with hol- low bodies that can be stuffed with binding herbs such as mullein, licorice, calamus, or even items like graveyard dirt or lead. If you can obtain a personal item from the target, make sure to include that into the doll. Mark the sign of Saturn on the chest and head of the doll.

Baptize the doll in the name of the target. To do this, make a cross over the doll with the gesture of benediction. When you make the vertical arm of the cross say: In the name of great Saturnus. When making the horizontal arm say:I name thee (inset name of target).

Take the doll in your left hand and wrap it in black bindings or chain. Tie it hand and foot. As you do this, you should be channeling the energy of the planet Saturn and praying the following:

By Saturnus I bind thy spirit By Agiel I bind thy intellect By Zazel I bind thy body

Thrice bound and thrice confounded art thee Unable to cause harm or mischief

Until I release thee from thy bonds.

You can then keep the doll in a box or even bury the doll in the grave of a soldier, asking him to watch over the prisoner until you return. Whether or not you ever return to release the binding is up to you. If you do, simply untie the doll and toss it all into a river so that it gets out of your life for good.

Confusion

When binding is not possible, another way to remove an enemy working against you without bringing him or her into direct harm are rites of confu- sion. Some see this as a type of jinx in and of itself, but confusion spells have been used in Hoodoo and Witchcraft as protection for many, many years. When faced with an obsessive enemy that will not give up after protection and reversal rites have been worked, a bit of confusion can be a tame but effective way to deal with an enemy.

A simple confusion spell can be accomplished by the laying of confusion power where the target will come into contact with it. Confusion powder is made with poppy seeds, twitch grass, and black mustard seeds added to a pow- der base like talcum. Some people color their powders, and if you do the appropriate color would be red. If you want to cause arguments and in-fighting as well as confusion amongst your enemies, add in black and red pepper. The same recipe could be used to make not only a powder but an oil or incense and use it in a similar way to the influencing spells.

Expelling

The last type of counter magick that I want to cover is that of Expelling, more commonly known in Rootworking as “hot-footing.” This type of magick is aimed at getting a person to leave your environment totally. Usually you are either expelling them from a home, from a job, or from a town. As with confusion spells, this is most often accomplished by use of a powder as the Level 3. To this is added fiery energy from Level 2, and invocations for divine protection on Level 1.

Generally speaking anything hot or stinging can be used in hot foot pow- der. My favorite recipe for the powder is Red and black pepper, crushed hornets or red ants, sulphur, poppy seeds, and witches salt (salt that has been blackened with soot). This powder is used in a similar way as the others and is particularly potent if it can be “sent through the foot” by having them walk on it, or putting it in their shoes. One of my favorite ways to use this is to sprinkle

it on the doorstep or office of the target, then drop a little bit at each cross- roads leading out of town, praying for the person to move each time you drop it.

If you can’t get close enough to a target to lay a powder, you can take a link to the person and bind it up in red cord. Soak it in hot-foot oil and roll it in hot-foot powder. Baptize it as you did the doll above, but instead of Saturn, call upon the powers of Mars. You could then toss it into a river to carry it away, or, if you are like me and enjoy a modern touch to your magick, mail it away to a foreign country. There is a mental hospital in Calcutta that has gotten strange packages from me once or twice. You can invoke the following as you send it off:

By the five fold power of Mars I cast Expell thee from my sphere

By Graphiel thou art defeated By Bartzabel thou art driven out Hekas Hekas Este Bebeloi Away Away ye profane!
