1 USAGE

a The future perfect indicates that one action will have taken place before another occurs in the future. In English the ordinary perfect tense is normally used in such cases.

In the text the future perfect (line 7) indicates that, when the workers have finished shouting, they will then go home and eat their suppers.

b The most frequent use of the future perfect is, as in the text, after time conjunctions such as:

quand, lorsque, aussitôt que, dès que.

In these sentences the main verb is in the future.

e.g. Lorsqu’ils auront bien crié, ils iront . . . (line 7)

2 FORMATION

The future perfect is formed using the future of être or avoir + the past participle of the verb (see verbs conjugated with être or avoir in Chapter 2).

e.g. Ils auront . . . crié (line 7)

Other points to note in the text

• Imperfect and past historic: the imperfect expresses a continuous action in the past (continuait, line 2) whereas the past historic conveys an action started and finished in the past (accrocha, line 5) (see Chapters 3 and 5).

• Past anterior (lorsqu’il eut aidé, line 5); note that the main verb is in the past historic (il dit, line 6) (see Chapter 5).

a The future perfect can describe an event scheduled to happen at some date in the future, e.g. C’est promis, j’aurai tapé ce document avant la fin de la semaine (the document will be typed before the end of the week).

b Like the future, the future perfect can indicate a probability (See Discover more about the future, e), e.g. Elle est déjà rentrée. Elle aura fini son travail plus tôt que de coutume (she must have finished earlier than usual).

c In the same way as the future, the future perfect can be used as a narrative tense referring to past events (See Discover more about the future, f).

e.g. Elle aura attendu 20 ans pour que son talent soit enfin reconnu (She will have waited 20 years for her talent to be recognized)
