Description of Major
The participating departments (Anthropology, Economics, Geography, Modern Languages, Political Science, History, Philosophy, Public Administration, Religion, Sociology, and Urban and Regional Planning) cooperate to offer an
interdepartmental major and minor combination, at the undergraduate and graduate levels, which is designed: 1) to equip students with a fundamental orientation in the field of international relations, 2) to provide basic methods of approach to the study, and 3) to provide intelligent observation of international affairs. Students are advised to coordinate their major coursework with foreign language study, focusing on a regional concentration. For the broader view of international affairs, students should include courses in economic organizations, and international relations. Each student majoring in International Affairs is encouraged to devote one semester to study abroad. Students are also encouraged to take advantage of the internship opportunities in Tallahassee and/or Washington, D.C.
Prerequisite Coursework: There is no prerequisite coursework for the major, but students are encouraged to take lower level introductory courses in some of the participating disciplines. Such courses serve as background for the major and may meet prerequisites for more advanced courses in the major. CPO 2002 is prerequisite for higher level courses in Comparative Politics;
INR 2002 is prerequisite for higher level courses in International Relations; ECO 2013 and 2023 are prerequisite for some higher level courses in economics and for the Emphasis in Business. ACC 2021 is prerequisite for the finance track of the Emphasis in Business.

Description of Major
The Program in Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS) treasures the interdisciplinary approach to education. A number of cooperating disciplines provide students with a solid grasp of Latin America’s present and past, while emphasizing major aspects of the region’s unique structures and those of the diaspora.
Students who major in Latin American and Caribbean Studies may choose to emphasize a particular area of their knowledge within our flexible curriculum or complement their learning with another major or minor. The flexibility of the program’s curriculum allows the student to pursue their interests while developing a critical understanding of the relations between disciplines, times, and people.
We encourage all of our students to complement their studies with extracurricular events and activities, internships and volunteer work, and study abroad programs in Costa Rica and Panama. Students preparing for graduate school should consider pursuing honors within the major or a directed independent study (DIS) to gain experience in conducting and
presenting original research. Depending on the area of emphasis selected, and the complementary major or minor, the program in LACS may be viewed as preparation for graduate school in various fields or as leading to professions in government and international service, multinational commerce, law, teaching, and translation.
Prerequisite Coursework: none
Requirements for graduation in the College of Arts and Sciences include: a minimum of six hours each in written
communication, humanities, and natural science, and three hours each in history and mathematics. These should be completed as part of the general education/Liberal Studies program. In addition, students must complete a foreign language through the intermediate (2220 or equivalent) level. Recommended languages are Spanish, Portuguese, or any other language considered relevant for this area of study.

To qualify for completion of the major, the student must also have completed the initial sequence or equivalent of Spanish, Portuguese or another language relevant to this area of study. This may also be used to satisfy the language requirement for the College of Arts and Sciences.
Minor Coursework: at least 12 hours
