The research programme has the following three research areas. Information Management (IM)

The research of this group focuses on the role of inter-organizational systems (IOS) to enable dynamic network organizations. IOS are information systems (e.g. ERP, CRM etc.) that enable the exchange of information between organizations. In particular, we study how inter-organizational control procedures for IOS can be designed that enable sustainable network organizations. We also develop the design methodology e3-Control, which supports the design process of control procedures.

Furthermore, we investigate online decision making in virtual a network context. In particular, this research focuses on the impact of system characteristics on online

purchase decision making. Systems that are investigated are electronic marketplaces and online stores. This research addresses the impact of particular system characteristics on the successful completion of decision tasks like, for example, the online purchase of a good or service. Moreover, relying on behavioural decision making theories, the research addresses decision support in an organizational context. Characteristics of the system as supportive decision making environment, the decision task and the decision maker(s) are combined into an integrative approach. The scope of this research is not limited to web- based systems but also includes decision making in virtual environments.

Knowledge & Organization (K&O)

The growing importance of knowledge as the main resource for organisations

(particularly also in services industries) has given rise to the need to conduct research on the role of knowledge intensive processes such as learning, networking, problem solving and innovation. We investigate knowledge processes within and between organisations and consequences for organisational support. This research is aimed at developing and testing theories that falls within the so-called ‘Knowledge based view of the Firm”. The research contributes to an international field of research that is relatively new and multi- disciplinary and where the focus has shifted from the formal organisations and ICT support to (physical as well as virtual) informal communities and networks as the unit of analysis. Ongoing research projects addresses knowledge diffusion in inter-organizational networks, such as within the Amsterdam New Media sector, the Dutch construction industry and the development sector; knowledge management within and between organizations, and online knowledge sharing practices, such as e.g. via Virtual Worlds and online communities.

Distribution and Supply Chain Logistics (DSL)

This research mainly focuses on the design and optimisation of inbound and outbound logistics processes for shippers and service providers in the logistics industry. Keywords in this context are supply and demand chain management, third party logistics providers,

Annual Report Faculty of Economics and Business Administration  2011  retail logistics, purchasing, cross-docking, warehousing and container terminals. By Means of qualitative research methods specific needs from logistics operations and supply chains in practice can be identified. To solve those needs and to contribute to scientific research in the field, new design concepts and models will be developed for internal and external logistics processes. We consider the following main research objectives of this programme as relevant from both a theoretical and practical perspective:

 Developing new planning and control concepts for internal logistics processes in distribution and service environments.

 Developing design principles for supply chains that have to deal with natural disasters and other unexpected large events.

 Extending theory on collaboration between manufacturers, logistics service providers and retailers in demand driven supply chains.

 Extending theory on strategic purchasing and e-procurement.

 Developing new general models for multi-item inventory systems with an order- based service level, such as the repair kit problem.

In all our research we have a research method, where we combine qualitative and quantitative empirical research methods with analytical simulation methods and

conceptual modelling. This multi-disciplinary research method is, in particular, relevant for the research on networks. For example, for building networks conceptual modelling and simulation is useful, whereas for evaluative research of existing networks empirical survey or case study is more appropriate.
