UNIT 3: Solving Equations Day 6: REVIEW

Remember - to solve an equation means to find the value of the variable that makes the equation true!

To Solve Equations - isolate the variable by performing opposite operations

Steps for Solving Equations....

1. Clear fractions first (by multiplying every single term by LCD) 2. Clear brackets (if any) by expanding

3. Get all of the variable terms on one side of the equal sign.

4. Isolate the variable term.

5. Isolate the variable.

(7)

Example #1

Solve and check:

EQUATIONS WITH BRACKETS AND MORE THAN

ONE VARIABLE TERM:

(8)

EQUATIONS WITH FRACTIONS:

Example #2 Solve:

cross multiply (only if it is only ONE  fraction equal to ONE other fraction) OR

multiply EACH TERM by the lowest  common denominator

(9)

MODELLING WITH FORMULAS:

Example #3

Solve: for h

(10)

Example #4

Ryan is 3 times as old as his  nephew Tyler.  In 5 years,  the sum of their ages will be  58.  How old are they?

1.  Determine the "Let" statements.

(defining the unknown variables)

2.  Create the equation with ONE variable.

3.  Solve the equation.

4.  Solve for the other unknowns.

5.  Concluding statement.

(11)

The Unit Test  will be similar to the quiz plus

• a queson like #2 on Worksheet 3.5

• two rearranging formula quesons

• two number word problems to set up

• two unit rate word problems to set up

• choose one of the above problems to fully solve

• one word problem will be fully solved requiring

you to idenfy and correct two mistakes in the

soluon.

(12)

TIPS FOR BEING SUCCESSFUL ON THE TEST!

• Complete all of the review questions. For each

question assigned, write out the question, show your work and check your answer with the back of the textbook.

• Look over all previous lessons, homework and quizzes!

Re-do any questions you got incorrect.

• Ask questions in class.

• Ask someone for extra help (friend, parent or teacher) if you're having difficulty.

Review Questions:

Pg. 230-231 #2, 5, 7-9, 11, 12-16 + Worksheet 3.5 Extra Practice
