50 Years of World Day
of Prayer for Vocations
Today is the 50th anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, which was instituted by Pope Paul VI during the Second Vatican Council. The entire Church, including lay people, are charged with the work of fostering priestly and religious vocations. Please pray that young people, especially those from our parish, will be open to God’s call in their lives!
Fourth Sunday of Easter
Acts 13:14, 43-52; Ps 100; Rv 7:9, 14b-17; Jn 10:27-30
In the forty days which separate the Ascension of the Lord from Easter Sunday, the Church lives the paschal mystery, meditating on it in her liturgy, where it is reflected, it could be said, as in a prism. The figure of the Good Shepherd occupies a particular place in this liturgical contemplation. On the fourth Sunday of Easter we read again the allegory of the Good Shepherd, which St John has inscribed in the tenth chapter of his gospel.
Jesus is the Good Shepherd because of the fact that he gives his life to the Father in this way: giving it back in sacrifice, he lays it down for the sheep.
By means of the paschal sacrifice, all men became his fold—because he has ensured to each one that divine and supernatural life which, since man's fall, owing to original sin, had been lost. He alone was able to restore it to man.
The allegory of the Good Shepherd and, in it, the image of the fold, are of fundamental importance to understand what the Church is and what tasks she has to carry out in the history of man. Not only must the Church be a “fold”, but she must actualize this mystery, which is always being accomplished between Christ and man: the mystery of the Good Shepherd, who lays down his life for the sheep. This is what St Augustine says of her: “will he, who sought you first when you despised him instead of seeking him, despise you, O sheep, if you seek him? Begin, therefore, to seek him, the one who sought you first and carried you on his shoulders. Make his words come true: The sheep that belong to me listen to my voice and follow me”
(Enarrationes in Psalmos, Ps LXIX, 6).
Together with all those who celebrate this solemnity we wish to approach again Christ the Good Shepherd, who “lays down his life for the sheep”, in order that he may be our strength for future centuries and for the new generations.

Durante los 40 días que separan la Ascensión del Señor de la fiesta de la resurrección, la Iglesia vive el misterio pascual, meditándolo en su liturgia, donde se refleja podríamos decir, como en un prisma. La figura del Buen Pastor ocupa un lugar particular en esta contemplación litúrgica pascual. En el IV domingo de Pascua volvemos a leer la alegoría del Buen Pastor, que San Juan ha descrito en el capítulo 10 de su Evangelio.
Jesús es el Buen Pastor por el hecho de dar su vida al Padre de este modo: entregándola en sacrificio, la ofrece por las ovejas.
Mediante el sacrificio pascual, todos se han convertido en su redil, porque Él ha asegurado a cada uno la vida divina y sobrenatural que, desde la caída del hombre a causa del pecado original, se había perdido. Sólo Él podía devolvérsela al hombre. La alegoría del Buen Pastor y, en ella, la imagen del redil, tienen importancia fundamental para entender lo que es la Iglesia y las tareas que debe realizar en la historia del hombre. La Iglesia no sólo debe ser “redil”, sino que debe realizar este misterio, que siempre se está realizando entre Cristo y el hombre: el misterio del Buen Pastor que da su vida por las ovejas. Así dice San Agustín: “¿Acaso el que primero te buscó, cuando lo despreciabas en vez de buscarlo, te despreciará, oveja, si lo buscas? Comienza, pues, a buscar a quien primero te buscó y te llevó sobre sus hombros. Haz que se realice su palabra: “las ovejas que me pertenecen escuchan mi
voz y me siguen” (Enarrationes in Psalmos, Sal 69, 6).
Junto con todos los que celebran esta solemnidad deseamos acercarnos de nuevo a Cristo Buen Pastor que “da la vida por las ovejas”, para que Él sea nuestra fuerza en los siglos venideros y en las nuevas generaciones.
