“Thy Will Be Done”
The third petition that brings us closer to God’s glory is,
“thy will be done.” So what is God’s will? It’s pretty basic: Love. St. John teaches us in his first letter that God is Love. So if we imitate God who is Love we need to love in order to do his will. He calls us to love Him and fellow human beings, but not in the way we might think.
He commanded his disciples during the last supper account given to us by John, “that you love one another;
even as I have loved you, that you also love one an other” (13:34).
So to do God’s will we must Love. God tells us to live it out by loving God and Neighbor. The Ten Command- ments summarize how to love God and Neighbor. But most especially we hear God’s will lived out in love by Jesus who shows us that what we do for the least person we do for him. This means feeding the hungry, giving a drink to the thirsty, clothing the naked and visiting the imprisoned. He states these things directly but the Holy Spirit has taught the Church to add the rest of the spiritual and corporal works of mercy to this list.
Where do we petition for Our Father’s will to be done?
The next phrase answers that question: on Earth! We have been taught that the will of the Father is already done perfectly in heaven. If only this could be done here and now! Well His will can be done on Earth as it is in Heaven if we change our hearts, minds, and attitudes to favor God’s will instead of our own. So this week let’s make is will our own!

Do you love babies? You can satisfy your love for babies and at the same time help a young mom or dad complete a high school education by volunteering with us. The Continuing Education for Young Parents (CEYP) program needs people to help take care of babies and toddlers while their teen parents attend high school classes. Volunteers are asked to give one morning or afternoon a week at a beautiful facility at Merlo Station High School, but we are flexible in our scheduling. If you are interested or have any questions, please contact Kate Richman at 503-869-5549, or email me at [email protected]. We would love to have you join us.
Thank you so much. If you have any questions feel free to contact me at the above phone number and email address.
