Art News

Lily Bade in 3rd grade did a fantastic job creating her painted owl! She started with an abstract painting, and transformed it into a realistic artwork. She even added a branch for her owl, and that’s why she’s Mr. McBroom’s artist of the month!

Wiggle Wednesday

Thank you to the parents and community members who have been joining us on Wednesday mornings during movement time. We love having you wiggle with us! We encourage everyone – moms, dads, grandpas, grand-mas, aunts, uncles, etc - to participate! Moving is not only a fun thing for people of all ages to do, but when the students see their teachers, parents, and other community members moving along side with them they are more likely to give it their all, too. Exercising is important for people of all ages. Studies show that people who exercise are not only healthier but happier, more focused, and alert as well. So if you’ve been hiding on the sidelines, it’s time to start moving with us! Don’t be afraid to jump into the crowd and start wiggling! It’s fun, it feels good, and it’s ok if you don’t know all the moves…the important thing is that you’re moving and getting your heart pumping. We ask that all who are present are moving right along with us!

4th Grade News

Does your child ever play with magnets? Does your child ask you about how electricity works? If so, they will be learning the answers to their questions in January. During Science, 4th Graders will be studying Magnetism and Electricity. Ask them questions about these two ideas to see what they are learning!

Spelling is a very important life skill. That is why we want to make sure you are helping your child with their spelling homework each week. Your child receives a weekly spelling list of 20 words. When looking at the lists you will see that the words are divided into categories: 10 Core Words that have a spelling pattern, 5 High Frequency words, and 5 Af-fixes/Root words. You can help your child use the spelling patterns and rules to memorize their spelling words. Each week we provide a list of ways to practice and even the lined paper to record their work. There is no excuse to not prac-tice spelling. Please make sure your child is practicing their spelling homework every day! We would love to see them receive 100% on all spelling tests!

We are finishing our studies around the wonderful state of Colorado in Social Studies. Now, we will be learning about the five different regions in the United States: Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, West and Southwest. As a celebration of finishing our Colorado studies, we will be taking a field trip to the Colorado History Museum on Wednesday Feb. 26. More information will be coming soon!

First Grade News

Math – Thank you to all the parents who came to the “Get on Target with Math” event. As you saw, we are working on adding and sub-tracting numbers to 20. We will be starting a unit on data, where students will conduct surveys and collect data. Please help your child with their math facts to 10.

Reading – We are learning about nonfic-tion text features. This will help us when we write our All-About books during 4th quar-ter. Please read with your child every night and discuss the main idea and facts from the text.

Skills – We are working on vowel sounds and word families. We will begin to learn about the sounds vowels make when they are in a pair. Your child will know “when two vowels go walking the first one does the talking.” Please help your child practice their spelling words each week. By then end of the year they need to know how to read and write all 150 first grade words.

Writing – We are finishing our How-To unit. Your child has written many pieces to teach others how to do, make, or play something in which they are an expert. During third quarter we will return to small moment writ-ing and work on reviswrit-ing and proofreadwrit-ing our writing.

Science – We will be finishing our sand, peb-ble, and silt unit. Ask your child about the attributes of rocks, where rocks come from, and what is made from rocks.

5th Grade News

We had a great field trip to the Museum of Nature and Science on December 13. Thanks so much to our parent volunteers for coming through! We appreciate the Denver Museum of Nature and Science for offering all of our 5th graders’ families a free year long membership, and for also providing free programming to us on Fit Day, Dec. 6. Thanks also to those who came to Family Math Day to see how children learn math. We hope you enjoyed the Holiday Concert on the 17th.

This month was the last for Ms. Linfield, our student teacher. Thanks for letting her learn with your children. We are now participating in The Walking Classroom, sponsored by Kaiser Permanente, with all three 5th grade classes. Please be sure your child is dressed for the weather daily, as it is designed to be an outdoor program. On days we feel it is too cold, we will walk inside the school or postpone. Thanks for your support of this pro-gram – the kids love it!

We hope you each have a wonderful and safe holiday break. We look forward to more engaging learning when we return.

Sincerely,
