Pentecost Sunday

Today the Church throughout the world is reliving the Solemnity of Pentecost, the mystery of her birth, her own “Baptism” in the Holy Spirit (cf. Acts 1:5) which occurred in Jerusalem 50 days after Easter, precisely on the Jewish Feast of Pentecost. The Risen Jesus had told his disciples: “Stay in the city, until you are clothed with power from on high” (Lk 24:49). This actually happened in the Upper Room, while they were all gathered in prayer with Mary, the Virgin Mother.

As we read in the Acts of the Apostles, that place was suddenly filled with the rush of a mighty wind and tongues as of fire settled on each one of those present. The Apostles then went out and began to proclaim in different languages that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, dead and risen (cf. Acts 2:1-4).

The Holy Spirit is the soul of the Church. Without him what would she be reduced to? She would certainly be an important movement in history, a complex and solid social institution, perhaps a sort of humanitarian agency. And to tell the truth she is considered such by those who do not see her from a perspective of faith. Yet, the reality is that in her true nature and also in her authentic presence in history, the Church is ceaselessly formed and guided by the Spirit of her Lord. She is a living body, whose vitality is, precisely, the fruit of the invisible divine Spirit.

Let us invoke the intercession of Mary Most Holy, so that she may obtain for the Church of our time that she be powerfully strengthened by the Holy Spirit.

Second General Synod of the Archdiocese of Miami

What is a Listening Session? Listening is an important part of our communion, of our

“coming together” in His name. Without listening, without understanding one another, we cannot lead and we cannot serve. A significant component of our Synod is listening to the People of God in Southeastern Florida. In order to forge a vision, identify pastoral priorities, and develop a plan, we must know first the needs and expectations of our people in the Archdiocese of Miami.

This “listening session” is an opportunity to learn of your needs, your expectations, and your dreams for the work of our parishes and our Archdiocese. After a brief time for reflection and prayer, and an introduction by the Archbishop, three questions will be posed to which you will be asked to respond individually, at your tables and then given an opportunity to share any comments with the Archbishop and the large group. The sessions will be facilitated so that as many people have a chance to speak as possible. In addition, the participants are encouraged to write their comments on survey forms that will be collected at the end of the session.

When are the Listening Sessions? Ten “listening sessions” have been scheduled across

the deaneries of the Archdiocese. Five sessions will be conducted in English, three in Spanish and two in Creole. The following are the dates and locations of the sessions.

La Iglesia esparcida por el mundo entero revive hoy, solemnidad de Pentecostés, el misterio de su nacimiento, de su “bautismo” en el Espíritu Santo (cf. Hch 1, 5), que tuvo lugar en Jerusalén cincuenta días después de la Pascua, precisamente en la fiesta judía de Pentecostés. Jesús resucitado había dicho a sus discípulos: “Permaneced en la ciudad hasta que seáis revestidos de poder desde lo alto” (Lc 24, 49). Esto aconteció precisamente en el Cenáculo, mientras se encontraban todos reunidos en oración junto con María, la Virgen Madre.

Como leemos en los Hechos de los Apóstoles, de repente aquel lugar se vio invadido por un viento impetuoso, y unas lenguas como de fuego se posaron sobre cada uno de los presentes. Los Apóstoles salieron entonces y comenzaron a proclamar en diversas lenguas que Jesús es el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, que murió y resucitó (cf. Hch 2, 1-4). El Espíritu Santo es el alma de la Iglesia. Sin él, ¿a qué se reduciría? Ciertamente, sería un gran movimiento histórico, una institución social compleja y sólida, tal vez una especie de agencia humanitaria. Y en verdad es así como la consideran quienes la ven desde fuera de la perspectiva de la fe. Pero, en realidad, en su verdadera naturaleza y también en su presencia histórica más auténtica, la Iglesia es plasmada y guiada sin cesar por el Espíritu de su Señor. Es un cuerpo vivo, cuya vitalidad es precisamente fruto del Espíritu divino invisible.

Invoquemos, por tanto, la intercesión de María santísima, para que obtenga a la Iglesia de nuestro tiempo la gracia de ser poderosamente fortalecida por el Espíritu Santo.

Segundo Sínodo General de la Arquidiócesis de Miami

¿Qué es una Sesión de Opinión? Saber escuchar es parte muy importante de nuestra

comunión, de nuestra “confraternidad” en Su nombre. Si no nos escuchamos, si no nos comprendemos mutuamente, no podemos guiar y no podemos servir. Un componente significativo de nuestro Sínodo es escuchar al Pueblo de Dios en el Sureste de la Florida. Para poder forjar una visión, identificar prioridades pastorales, y desarrollar un plan, debemos saber primero las necesidades y las expectativas de nuestros fieles en la Arquidiócesis de Miami.

Esta “sesión de opinión” es una oportunidad para conocer sus necesidades, sus expectativas, y sus sueños para la labor de nuestras parroquias y nuestra Arquidiócesis. Después de un breve tiempo de reflexión y oración y una presentación del Arzobispo, los participantes serán invitados a reflexionar sobre tres preguntas, primero individualmente, luego en pequeños grupos, y finalmente, tendrán la oportunidad de compartir sus comentarios con el Arzobispo y con toda la asamblea. Las sesiones serán suministradas de manera que el mayor número de personas posible pueda hablar. También podrán escribir sus comentarios en las encuestas que serán recogidas al final de la sesión.

¿Cuándo son las Sesiones de Opinión? Se han programado diez “sesiones de opinión” a

través de la Arquidiócesis. Cinco sesiones serán conducidas en inglés, tres en español y dos en Creole. A continuación están las fechas y el lugar de las sesiones.
