 Semifinalists are to arrive at the District’s Education Services and Support Center (84 East J Street) by 1:00 p.m. on the designated semifinal competition date for each grade level: fourth grade – February 22, fifth grade – February 23, sixth grade – February 24.

 Finalists are to arrive at the School District (84 East J Street) by 1:00 p.m. on Monday, February 27, 2012.

Speeches are to be three to 5 minutes in length. Five penalty points will be deducted for speeches under three minutes or over six minutes.

 Note cards are optional.

 An optional music stand for notes may be used.  No speech should be read verbatim.

 No props or costumes permitted.

 Speeches may be given in a language other than English; however three copies of the English version will be required.

Teachers and parents may support students, but speech must be student’s original work. This means that adults may assist in brainstorming ideas, but should not generate or structure the student’s language.

EACH CONTESTANT WILL BE JUDGED ON A FIFTY-POINT SCALE CONTENT Organization:

Los semifinalistas deben llegar a las oficinas del Distrito Escolar (84 East J Street) antes de la 1:00 PM el día designado para las competencias semifinales de su grado escolar: El 22 de febrero para cuarto grado; el 23 de febrero para quinto grado; el 24 de febrero para sexto grado.

Los finalistas deben llegar a las oficinas del Distrito Escolar (84 East J Street) antes de la 1:00 p.m. el lunes 27 de febrero de 2012.

 Los discursos deben durar entre tres y cinco minutos. Se restarán cinco puntos si el discurso dura menos de tres minutos o más de cinco minutos.

 Usar tarjetas con apuntes es opcional.  Es opcional usar un atril para los apuntes.  No se debe leer el discurso palabra por palabra.  No se permiten auxiliares visuales o disfraces.

 Los discursos pueden ser en otros idiomas que no sean inglés; sin embargo se requiere presentar tres copias de la versión en inglés.

Los maestros y padres de familia pueden apoyar a los alumnos, pero el discurso debe ser obra original del alumno. Esto significa que los adultos pueden ayudar a sugerir ideas pero no generar o dar

estructura al lenguaje del alumno.

A CADA CONCURSANTE SE LE CALIFICARÁ EN UNA ESCALA DE CINCUENTA PUNTOS

Timeline

January 2012:

 Packets sent to schools by December 9th, 2012.

 Schools make copies, as needed, of contest information for distribution to speech coordinators, teachers, students, and parents.

 Teachers view previous year’s speeches at

www.cvesd.org

2010 speech contest link.

 Schools conduct their own Speech Contest for fourth, fifth, sixth-grade. First-place winners from each grade level will participate in the District Speech Contest.

 Copies of the rules for the District Speech Contest are sent home with qualifiers.

 Notify Instructional Technology & Media Services with the number of “Certificates of Participation”,

limit 20 per school, you may make copies as needed (for participating students who did not

finish in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place)

 Notify Instructional Technology & Media Services with the number of 1st

, 2nd, and 3rd place ribbons needed for each grade.

February 2012:

 Notify Instructional Technology and Media Services of the names of 1st place winners at each grade

by completing the “School Winner Form” and the “Media Release Authorization Form” and sending them by the deadline date: Tuesday, February 7, 2012. Please send the form to “IT&MS—Speech Contest” or fax it to 425-1807.

 The 2011 District Speech Contest will be held at the Chula Vista Elementary School District

Education Services and Support Center, 84 East J Street, Room B and C, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on the following dates:

Fourth Grade Semifinal Competition: Wednesday, February 22, 2011 Fifth Grade Semifinal Competition: Thursday, February 23, 2011 Sixth Grade Semifinal Competition: Friday, February 24, 2011 Fourth, Fifth, Final Competition: Monday, February 27, 2011 (Contestants should arrive at 1:00 p.m. to check in)

 Please note: Districtwide winners will be invited to present their speeches at a future Board of Education meeting.

PRIZES:

School-Level Speech Contest:

Ribbons for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners at each grade level (fourth, fifth, and sixth). “Certificates of Participation” for all others who competed in the school contest. District-Level Speech Contest:

1st place at each grade level receives a $200 savings bond and a rosette ribbon, as well as a perpetual trophy to be kept at the winner’s school for a year.

2nd place at each grade level receives a $100 savings bond and a rosette ribbon. 3rd place at each grade level receives a $75 savings bond and a rosette ribbon.

Send 2012 Chula Vista Elementary School District Speech Contest Rules (enclosed) home

with winners. Make copies as needed.

Speech Coordinators at participating schools are encouraged to invite the parents to the

school site competition.

District Level

Speeches are to be three to five minutes in length. Five penalty points will be deducted for

speeches under three minutes or over five minutes. Each speech will be timed and

minutes recorded.

Note cards are optional, but no speech can be read verbatim. A music stand will be

available on which the students may place their notes. This is also optional.

If speech is given in a language other than English, you must bring three copies (one for

each judge) translated into English.

Contestants are to arrive at the District office by 1 p.m. on the designated date for each

grade level.

Each contestant will be judged on a fifty-point scale. A copy of the judges’ rating sheet is

attached.

In case of a tie, the first tiebreaker will be Content (total points), then Poise/Delivery (total),

and last Interest.

The order of presentations will be determined by random selection on the day of the

contest.

Contestants will be asked to introduce their family members and friends in attendance after

the completion of speeches.

First place winners from each grade level will be invited to present their speech to the

Board of Education.

All Finalist video will be presented to the TED Conference committee for consideration for

future event.
