FROM THE PASTOR HEY NOW!
This past Monday, July 18 was dedicated by the United Nations as Nelson Mandela International Day. It is a set aside so that people would step up and work to make a difference in their home and community and by doing so, then they could make a difference in the world around them. The UN resolution that created this day puts it succinctly and leaves no questions as to why they dedicated this day to the former President of South Africa.
“Resolution A/RES/64/13recognizes Mandela’s values and his dedication to the service of humanity in:
conflict resolution; race relations; promotion and protection of human rights; reconciliation; gender equality and the rights of children and other vulnerable groups; the fight against poverty; the promotion of social justice. The resolution acknowledges his contribution to the struggle for democracy internationally and the promotion of a culture of peace throughout the world.”
As we are able to look at history, we know that Nelson Mandela was an imperfect person, just like we all are, but he had a vision that despite those challenges that make us human we could work together to create a better world where justice reigns and peace is lived.
Mandela was quoted as saying that, “It is easy to break down and destroy. The heroes are those who make peace and build.” While not a Catholic Christian his words echo those of Jesus. His first gift to the fledgling church after his resurrection was his peace. He breathed the Holy Spirit upon them, and us through them, so that we would go out and remember that the Reign of God is at hand. It is at hand because we as disciples on the mission with Jesus will do anything that we are able to build up God’s kingdom of unity and peace.
While this event has passed us by for another year, we could use this coming week to reflect upon our words and actions. If we are honest with ourselves what do our words and actions do? Do we find ourselves using our days to break down another’s spirit? Do we, even though we know better, destroy another person out of spite or some joy that we feel thinking that we are
better than them? Would anyone know by what we say and do that God’s reign is at hand because we are filled with nothing but compassion and the love of Christ? Or is it more accurate that others would say that what they hear us talking about (or who they hear us talking about) does not bring a sense of peace, but in reality, hatred and division (the gifts of the spirit of evil, not the Spirit of God)?
As we do an examen, as St. Ignatius of Loyola called it, into our days and lives, maybe we see the glimmer of light when we chose to be a hero. Those times we stood up for those that others were making fun of or were excluding or oppressing, even though someone else might have then persecuted us. Those times that when people around us talked down about people and even though we might have had our opinion we stopped them because we know that words about them have the power to destroy and literally kill the spirt of another person. Those times when we just decided that despite all the divisions we have in our country, we didn’t want to widen the gap between others, and instead we reached out a hand to bless everyone, especially our enemies. The moments when we decided to offer a prayer for the church and those who shepherd it, instead of saying how much we hate this or that about what they have done. We should not want to be heroes like Mandela said, but we should want to be Christians in the image and likeness of Christ who shows us the love and mercy of God. We have work to do to be Christ to others and the world needs us to do just that. Even more so Jesus needs us to be weak, emptying ourselves, so that He can make us strong in his love. What shall we find ourselves doing this week? Will we truly show we are disciples of Christ taking upon ourselves His mission or will we spend our time breaking down and destroying just like the devil wants of us?

El pasado lunes 18 de julio fue consagrado por Naciones Unidas como el Día Internacional de Nelson Mandela. Es un apartado para que las personas den un paso adelante y trabajen para marcar una diferencia en su hogar y comunidad y, al hacerlo, puedan marcar una diferencia en el mundo que los rodea. La resolución de la ONU que creó este día lo expresa de manera sucinta y no deja dudas sobre por qué dedicaron este día al ex presidente de Sudáfrica.
“La resolución A/RES/64/13 reconoce los valores de Mandela y su dedicación al servicio de la humanidad en:
resolución de conflictos; relaciones raciales; promoción y protección de los derechos humanos; reconciliación; la igualdad de género y los derechos de los niños y otros grupos vulnerables; la lucha contra la pobreza; la promoción de la justicia social. La resolución reconoce su contribución a la lucha por la democracia a nivel internacional y la promoción de una cultura de paz en todo el mundo”.
A medida que somos capaces de mirar la historia, sabemos que Nelson Mandela fue una persona imperfecta, como todos lo somos, pero tuvo una visión de que, a pesar de esos desafíos que nos hacen humanos, podríamos trabajar juntos para crear un mundo mejor donde reine la justicia. y se vive la paz. Si somos honestos con nosotros mismos, ¿qué hacen nuestras palabras y acciones? ¿Nos encontramos usando nuestros días para quebrantar el espíritu de otra persona? ¿Aunque sabemos mejor, destruimos a otra persona por despecho opor alguna alegría que sentimos pensando que somos mejores que ella? ¿Alguien sabría por lo que decimos y hacemos que el reino de Dios está cerca porque estamos llenos de nada más que compasión y el amor de Cristo? ¿O es más exacto que otros digan que lo que nos escuchan hablar (o de quién nos escuchan hablar) no trae una sensación de paz, sino en realidad odio y división (los dones del espíritu del mal, noel
Espíritu de Dios)?
Mientras hacemos un examen, como lo llamó San Ignacio de Loyola, en nuestros días y vidas, tal vez veamos un destello de luz cuando elegimos ser un héroe. Esas veces defendíamos a aquellos de los que otros se burlaban o excluían u oprimían, aunque otro nos persiguiera. Esos momentos en que cuando las personas a nuestro alrededor hablaban mal de las personas y, aunque podríamos haber tenido nuestra opinión, los deteníamos porquesabemos que las palabras sobre ellos tienen el poder de destruir y literalmente matar el espíritu de otra persona. Esos momentos en los que simplemente decidimos que a pesar de todas las divisiones que tenemos en nuestro país, no queríamos ampliar la brecha entre los demás y, en cambio, extendemos una mano para bendecir a todos, especialmente a nuestros enemigos.
Los momentos en que decidimos ofrecer una oración por la iglesia y quienes la pastorean, en lugar de decir cuánto odiamos esto o aquello de lo que han hecho. No debemos querer ser héroes como dijo Mandela, pero debemos querer ser cristianos a imagen y semejanza de Cristo que nos muestra el amor y la misericordia de Dios. Tenemos trabajo que hacer para ser Cristo para los demás y el mundo necesita que hagamos precisamente eso. Más aún Jesús necesita que seamos débiles, vaciándonos de nosotros mismos, para que Él pueda hacernos fuertes en su amor.
¿Qué nos encontraremos haciendo esta semana?
¿Verdaderamente mostraremos que somos discípulos de Cristo asumiendo Su misión o pasaremos nuestro tiempo derribando y destruyendo como el diablo quiere de nosotros?

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE
17th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Meister Eckhart asks, “Who is the man whose prayers God
always hears?” He answers, “God hears the man who appeals to God as God. When, however, man appeals to God, hoping for
some worldly good, he is not appealing to God at all, but to what he is asking of God. He is trying to make God his servant.
On this point, St. Augustine says: ‘You pray to what you love, for true whole prayer is nothing but love!’ Thus, we pray to what we love, and no one rightly prays to God but he who prays for God
and has nothing on his mind but God.” We struggle with what we want God to do and how we want our prayer validated.
Meister Eckhart is correct. We often want God to be our servant. We further struggle with trusting that God knows what
we need and that His will is best.
God’s will is not some predetermined outcome of events that we must simply suggest. “Thy will be done” is not an invocation
beckoning us to accept a particular state of affairs passively.
Rather, it is the humble and confident placement of ourselves in the presence of the God we seek, whom we call “Father.” We must remember that God is the God of life and light. It is from nothing that God brings something and from the darkness that
God brings life. Prayer allows us to seek the One we love with the assurance that all will be well regardless of what course the
events of our lives take. God is not about passive submission but the humble trust of love.
That’s what makes the Lord’s Prayer the perfect prayer. It provides us with proper disposition and focus, putting in line all
of the essential relationships of our lives. It celebrates and fosters the ever-deepening relationship of trust we have with
our Creator. It also calls us to keep open the doors of love between our brothers and sisters with the power that comes
with forgiveness. If in one’s darkest hour they can find the resolve to fervently pray this perfect prayer of Jesus’
conviction, then there is no doubt that God will hear their plea, reach out in love, and bring them ever closer to His heart. What more does one need to weather the storms of life besides faith, hope, and love? These are God’s most perfect gifts and all we
really need.

A lo largo de servir en el ministerio de la catequesis, muchas personas me han preguntado: ¿Cuál es la mejor manera de hacer oración? Cuando los discípulos le preguntan a Jesús lo
mismo, él les participa su propia experiencia de oración:
hablar con el Padre del cielo que nos ama y nos conoce y sabe perfectamente lo que nos hace falta. El Padrenuestro, oración que nos lleva a saber dónde está Dios, que Él es Santo, que nos perdona siempre, que nos da el pan de cada día, y que nos
libra de todo mal.
“Pidan y se les dará, busquen y hallarán, llamen a la puerta y les abrirá. Porque todo el que pide recibe, el que busca halla y
al que llame a la puerta se le abrirá” (Lucas 11,9-10). ¿Qué le pides a Dios hoy? ¿De qué le quieres hablar? El Papa Francisco
nos da su catequesis sobre la oración y nos dice que: “La oración es el primer y principal instrumento de trabajo que
tenemos en nuestras manos. Insistir a Dios no sirve para convencerle, sino para reforzar nuestra fe y nuestra paciencia,
es decir, nuestra capacidad de luchar junto a Dios por las cosas realmente importantes y necesarias. En la oración
somos dos: Dios y yo luchando juntos por las cosas importantes”. Por esa razón, Abraham, insistió tanto en su oración para salvar a Sodoma. Fue un diálogo de petición y
una respuesta de amor.
