Announcing the publication of
A Brief
NTRO)UC TION TO SPANIH
By DONALD DEVENISH WALSH
In A Brief Introduction to Spanish, Donald Walsh has revised and simplified his Introductory Spanish to meet the requests of in- structors who have used and liked the original text but who have found it somewhat too long and detailed for their needs, especially in a one-semester course.
A Brief Introduction to Spanish retains the plan and approach of Introductory Spanish but shortens the text to include only those materials deemed indispensable. The number of sections has been reduced from 171 to 104, the exercises and vocabularies have been shortened, and in the explanation of grammar and idioms every effort has been made to achieve simplicity without inaccuracy.
Important Features
Vocabularies are restricted to words that students need to learn and great care has been taken to explain the use of words and phrases that offer spe- cial difficulty. There is early and persistent drill on verb forms. The study of the subjunctive is begun in Lesson 14, and there is frequent practice in its use thereafter.
Oral work is stressed throughout the book with texts in dialogue form, coplas, proverbs, and a connected series of conversations.
Systematic reviewing has been made an integral part of the book. There are five review lessons, a thorough general review, and a series of "vertical reviews" similar to those used in Introductory Spanish.
A Brief Introduction to Spanish is off the press. If you are con- cerned with teaching first year Spanish, we believe that you will want to consider this new book. Examination copies will be sup- plied upon request.
