There is a date coming up that we’d like you to mark so you can participate in the activi- ties of the day.

The date is Sunday, Au- gust 21, 2018. On this day from 12:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. we will have our parish picnic and cele- brate Fr. Bernardo’s birthday as well. It will take place at St.

Francis side yard and the park next to the parish.

There is a twist to the picnic this year. Mass will be celebrated at St. Francis at 11:00 a.m. The 10am Mass at St.

Francis and the 12pm Mass at St. Hedwig will be cancelled that day only. We will all come together to celebrate the liturgy at St. Francis then walk out to have food and some fun.

As always we will be in need of your help! Help can mean a number of things. You could donate food or drink items, you could offer your ser- vices setting up and tearing down the tables, monetary dona- tions are always welcome too!

If you can volunteer to help in anyway please call the parish office at (313) 894-5409.

**Make sure you bring a towel for the kids to dry off after they play on the tandum water slide.

It will be held in conjunction with the Warren Birthday Bash, which will take place from Thursday, August 25, through Saturday, August 27. The event will feature music, a beer tent, food trucks, a carnival, kids' en- tertainment, and a T-shirt booth.

“Who is the man whose prayers God always hears?” He answers,

“God hears the man who appeals to God as God. When, however, man appeals to God, hoping for some worldly good, he is not ap- pealing to God at all, but to what he is asking of God. He is trying to make God his servant. On this point, St. Augustine says: ‘You pray to what you love, for true whole prayer is nothing but love!’

Thus, we pray to what we love, and no one rightly prays to God but he who prays for God and has nothing on his mind but God.” We struggle with what we want God to do and how we want our prayer

validated. Meister Eckhart is correct. We often want God to be our servant. We further struggle with trusting that God knows what we need and that His will is best. God’s will is not some predetermined outcome of events that we must simply suggest. “Thy will be done” is not an invocation beckoning us to accept a par- ticular state of affairs passive- ly. Rather, it is the humble and confident placement of our- selves in the presence of the God we seek, whom we call

“Father.” We must remember that God is the God of life and light. It is from nothing that God brings something and from the darkness that God brings life. Prayer allows us to seek the One we love with the assurance that all will be well regardless of what course the events of our lives take. God is not about passive submission but the humble trust of love.

That’s what makes the Lord’s Prayer the perfect pray- er. It provides us with proper disposition and focus, putting in line all of the essential rela- tionships of our lives. It cele- brates and fosters the ever- deepening relationship of trust we have with our Creator. It also calls us to keep open the doors of love between our brothers and sisters with the power that comes with for- giveness. If in one’s darkest hour they can find the resolve to fervently pray this perfect prayer of Jesus’ conviction, then there is no doubt that God will hear their plea, reach out in love, and bring them ever closer to His heart. What more does one need to weather the storms of life besides faith, hope, and love? These are God’s most perfect gifts and all we really need.

A lo largo de servir en el ministerio de la catequesis, muchas personas me han preguntado: ¿Cuál es la mejor manera de hacer oración? Cuan- do los discípulos le preguntan a Jesús lo mismo, él les participa su propia experiencia de oración:

hablar con el Padre del cielo que nos ama y nos conoce y sabe perfectamente lo que nos hace falta. El Padrenuestro, oración que nos lleva a saber dónde está Dios, que Él es Santo, que nos perdona siempre, que nos da el pan de cada día, y que nos libra de todo mal.

“Pidan y se les dará, busquen y hallarán, llamen a la puerta y les abrirá. Porque todo el que pide recibe, el que busca halla y al que llame a la puerta

se le abrirá” (Lucas 11,9-10).

¿Qué le pides a Dios hoy? ¿De qué le quieres hablar? El Papa Francisco nos da su catequesis sobre la oración y nos dice que: “La oración es el primer y principal instrumento de traba- jo que tenemos en nuestras manos. Insistir a Dios no sirve para convencerle, sino para reforzar nuestra fe y nuestra paciencia, es decir, nuestra ca- pacidad de luchar junto a Dios por las cosas realmente im- portantes y necesarias. En la oración somos dos: Dios y yo luchando juntos por las cosas importantes”. Por esa razón, Abraham, insistió tanto en su oración para salvar a Sodoma.

Fue un diálogo de petición y una respuesta de amor.

Cuando llamé, Tú respondiste

Algunos de nosotros tenemos ese amigo del que constantemente estamos descu- briendo cosas nuevas. Tal vez hemos conocido a esta persona desde hace diez o incluso veinte años, y un día en el al- muerzo descubriremos que es

descendiente directo de un presi- dente fallecido o que una vez conoció a una celebridad im- portante.

“Nunca preguntaste,”

dirán encogiéndose de hombros.

Tan molesto como puede ser, tiene mucho sentido, ¿no?

Nunca preguntamos. Hay algo extrañamente sagrado sobre el acto de pedir algo. Requiere hu- mildad. Requiere gracia.

Requiere que estemos des- piertos, que seamos conscientes, que seamos vulnerables.

Con demasiada frecuen- cia caemos en un patrón de pre- sunción, incluso cuando se trata de información. Vamos por la vida pensando que una gran cin- ta transportadora cósmica de lo que queremos nos va a pasar rodando y apenas tendremos que extender los brazos. Leemos nuestra Biblia y escuchamos todas estas asombrosas promesas del Padre que nos ama, y nos volvemos algo com- placientes. Él tiene esto, pen- samos, y cerramos los ojos para tomar una siesta en el viaje de la vida, seguros de que alguien más estará atento a las señales de alto y los giros equivocados.

Es verdad: Dios tiene esto. Él va a cuidar de nosotros.
