All Souls Parish Take-Out Dinner
We have delighted in providing a monthly Take-Out Dinner over the past several months. We are taking January off, to allow our generous volunteers to relax after the holidays, and to be extra protective of eve-ryone’s health. We will start up again in February – offering a “Fat Tuesday” Take-Out meal for our pa-rishioners to enjoy on February 16th. Remember, you must make reservations for our Take-Out Dinners, and you can do that by emailing: [email protected]

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:
SPEAK, LORD, WE ARE LISTENING
In today’s first reading God keeps call-ing out in the night to a sleepcall-ing boy. Nei-ther the boy, Samuel, nor his teacher, Eli, understands who is calling. But God’s per-sistence convinces them. Samuel is then
ready—not ready yet to do anything, but
ready to listen. “Speak, for your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:10).
In the Gospel Jesus is out teaching. Vari-ous people notice him and begin to gather around. They soon become disciples and,
like the young Samuel, are ready—not
ready yet to do anything, but ready to lis-ten. “Speak,” they say, “we are listening.”
God’s voice is always with us, awake or asleep. It swirls around us like fog on a wa-terfront, enveloping us, gently urging us to wake up, to listen. Awareness of the voice comes first; then willingness to listen; then, in time, the decision to act, to live accord-ing to God’s word. PENSAMIENTO DE LA SEMANA:
HABLA, SEÑOR, ESTAMOS ESCUCHANDO
En la primera lectura de hoy Dios llama repe-tidas veces en la noche a un niño dormido. Ni el niño, Samuel, ni su maestro, Elí, entienden quién está llamando. Pero la persistencia de Dios los convence. Samuel ya está listo; no para hacer algo todavía, pero dispuestos a escuchar. “Habla Señor, tu siervo te escucha” (1 Samuel 3:10).
En el Evangelio, Jesús está afuera enseñan-do. Varias personas lo ven y comienzan a reunir-se alrededor. Pronto reunir-se convierten en discípulos y, al igual que el joven Samuel, están listos, no para hacer algo todavía, pero dispuestos a es-cuchar. “Habla”, dicen, “te escuchamos”.
La voz de Dios está siempre con nosotros, ya sea que estemos despiertos o dormidos. Se arre-molina a nuestro alrededor como la niebla en una costa envolviéndonos, suavemente nos ur-ge a despertar, a escuchar. Estar conscientes de la voz es lo primero; luego la voluntad de es-cuchar; y más luego, con el tiempo, la decisión de actuar, de vivir según la Palabra de Dios. EL CRISTO NEGRO
The most im-portant day at the Basilica of Esquipulas is January 15, when many thousands of pilgrims flock from all over Latin America. Ask most Gua-temaltecos what is in Chiquimu-la and you will
invariably
re-ceive the reply:
“El Cristo
Ne-gro,” often
fol-lowed by, “That
is all there is in Chiquimula …”
The sculpture was commissioned in the year 1594 by Bishop Morales, from a Portuguese artist, Quirio
Catano, a long-term resident of the area, who was
familiar with its particular history.
Throughout the centuries, numerous miracles have been attributed to El Cristo Negro, and large displays inside the church document these personal stories. In recognition of divine assistance, pilgrims have pre-sented small plaques, expressing gratitude or simply small silver images of the particular body parts healed by El Cristo Negro, and these can be viewed on the approach to the
statue itself.
While for many cen-turies, visitors were at liberty to approach and kiss the statue, and did so, fervently, wear and tear (and
perhaps common
sense) have since dic-tated that El Cristo Negro retire behind a glass screen; he is now watched over by a security camera.
The most important day at the Basilica is the 15th of January, when many thousands of pilgrims flock to Esquipulas from all over Latin America. The people come both to request assistance from El Cristo Negro and to fulfill promises to return, made in exchange for assistance that was gratefully received.
Everyone who visits the basilica cannot help but be impressed by the atmosphere that centuries of rever-ence and awe have created around the figure of El Cristo Negro, and with the thought of the many thou-sands who have passed here before, each with their own unique story. This year for sure will be different for the pilgrims to Esquipulas but we can always use the crucifix in our church or our own crucifixes at home to remind us of the great love Jesus has for us and revere Him in the crucifix for the gift of salvation.

EL CRISTO NEGRO
El día más importante en la Basílica de Esquipulas es el 15 de enero, cuando miles de peregrinos llegan de toda América Latina. Pregúntele a la mayoría de los Guatemaltecos qué hay en Chiquimula e inva-riablemente recibirá la respuesta: "El Cristo Negro", seguido a menudo por "Eso es todo lo que hay en Chiquimula ..."
La escultura fue comisionada en el año 1594 por el obispo Morales, de un artista portugués, Quirio Ca-tano, residente de la zona desde hace mucho tiem-po, que conocía su particular historia.
A lo largo de los siglos, se han atribuido numerosos milagros a El Cristo Negro, y grandes exhibiciones
dentro de la Iglesia documentan estas historias per-sonales. En reconocimiento a la asistencia divina, los peregrinos han presentado pequeñas placas, ex-presando gratitud o simplemente pequeñas imáge-nes plateadas de las partes particulares del cuerpo curadas por El Cristo Negro, y estas se pueden ver al acercarse a la estatua misma.
Si bien durante muchos siglos, los visitantes tuvie-ron la libertad de acercarse y besar la estatua, y lo hicieron, fervientemente, el desgaste (y quizás el sentido común) ha dictado desde entonces que El Cristo Negro se retire detrás de una pantalla de vi-drio; ahora está vigilado por una cámara de seguri-dad.
El día más importante en la Basílica es el 15 de Enero, cuando miles de peregrinos acuden a Esqui-pulas de toda América Latina. La gente viene tanto para pedir ayuda a El Cristo Negro como para cum-plir las promesas de regresar, hechas a cambio de una ayuda que fue recibida con gratitud.
Todos los que visitan la basílica no pueden evitar quedar impresionados por la atmósfera que siglos de reverencia y asombro han creado alrededor de la figura de El Cristo Negro, y con el pensamiento de los muchos miles que han pasado por aquí antes, cada uno con su propia historia única. Este año se-guro será diferente para los peregrinos a Esquipulas pero siempre podemos usar el crucifijo en nuestra Iglesia o nuestros propios crucifijos en casa para recordarnos el gran amor que Jesús tiene por noso-tros y reverenciarlo en el crucifijo por el don de la salvación.
