EADING ISAIAH 11:1-10 On that day, a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom. The spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him: a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, a spirit of counsel and of strength, a spirit of knowledge and of fear of the LORD, and his delight shall be the fear of the LORD. Not by appearance shall he judge, nor by hearsay shall he decide, but he shall judge the poor with justice, and decide aright for the land’s afflicted. He shall strike the ruthless with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked. Justice shall be the band around his waist, and faithfulness a belt upon his hips. John wore clothing made of camel’s hair and had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. To honor Joseph’s and Mary’s search for shelter before Jesus’s birth, Incarnation’s Standing Together group seeks your help for Catholic missionaries serv- ing asylum-seekers waiting in Juarez, Mexico, across the Rio Grande from El Paso. Donations will buy food, pay rent and utilities and pro- vide other necessities.

Ask ushers for a special Posadas envelope. Or leave your donation with volunteers in the vestibule after every weekend Mass until Christmas. Checks can made out to Sagrado Corazon de Jesus.

JOHN THE BAPTIST: Today we meet a familiar but en- igmatic figure. Jesus’ cousin, baptizer, and perhaps even his teacher for a time, John was very important to the evangelists. Today we do not look at John as nearly as important as Mary or the Apostles, never mind as a rival to our Lord. Yet we know that there still exists a small religion in the Middle East that venerates John above all other religious figures. Whatever his im- portance to his contemporaries, we remember him espe- cially for saying that he must decrease so that Jesus might increase. May Jesus increase in us as well.

THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION: Were today not an Advent Sunday, we would celebrate it as the feast of the Immaculate Conception of Jesus’ Moth- er. This year, the feast is postponed a day and has no Mass obligation. The Church honors God’s prep- aration of Mary to be a powerful mother, teacher, and example for her Son. In her own glorious way, Mary did what John the Baptist did. She spoke her own “yes” to God’s gift of the Messiah. Pray for us, Mother of God, that God’s will be done in us.

OUR LADY OF JUQUILA: Many devotees of the Blessed Mother, and especially from southern Mexico, celebrate her under the title of Our Lady of Juquila on December 8. Prayer for her powerful intercession has centered on a sanctuary and image of Mary in that his- toric town for centuries. Through her intercession, may they enjoy a year of many blessings.

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE: On Wednesday night and all day Thursday we celebrate the Patroness of the Americas under the title of Our Lady of Guada- lupe. Although the name came from Spain, the devo- tion is deeply Mexican. Mary appeared to a struggling

BAKE AND BOUTIQUE: All these Advent celebra- tions really point toward Christmas. Incarnation’s annual Bake and Boutique supports your Christmas preparations through the sale of handicrafts, baked goods, and a delicious lunch and breakfast. And it supports the life of the parish in the process. Thank you, Rose, Jane, and all the volunteers who have made this weekend’s event happen.

POSADA AT THE BORDER: Parish members are di- recting Advent charity toward the children living in refugee camps along the Mexican-US border. The lovely tiled houses you see in our church these days remind us of the needs of dispossessed young people awaiting a safer home. Thank you to those who are organizing this effort – and to all contributors.

NEXT WEEK: RELIGIOUS RETIREMENT COLLEC- TION: At next weekend’s Masses I will solicit your support for vowed Sisters and Brothers who live in communities unable to care for their retirement needs. You have many calls on your kindness these days – thank you for responding.

BORNHOFT BABIES: Incarnation’s Bornhoft family is rapidly establishing its next generation. All three of Tad and Kim’s sons began to have children this year, and today we baptize Geoffrey and Kaitlyn’s first-born.

Grandma Kim, by the way, chairs our Standing Togeth- er group, caring for children near and far.

THREE WEDDINGS THE NEXT THREE WEEKS: Incar- nation hosts three weddings before the end of the year, and then none until mid-March. Please pray for long and happy lives together for Araceli and Ruperto, for Lauren and Eric, and for Ofelia and Mark.

ROSA AND ANDRES: 25 YEARS: Rosa Martinez and Andres Ramirez will celebrate a quarter-century of fruitful marriage at next Saturday’s 5:00 PM Mass.

In addition to bringing their three lovely children to our community, they also teach adult faith for- mation, provide a summer marriage enrichment seminar, and serve at the altar. Thank you for shar- ing yourselves with us!

FAMILY BIRTHDAYS: Each year my family mixes Thanksgiving feasts with birthday parties: two of my sisters celebrate another year in late November; our brother Denis turned 50 last Monday; and our mom was born 87 years ago on Thursday. God bless your family celebrations all year long!

Las hermosas casas de azulejos que ves en nuestro templo en estos días nos recuerdan las necesidades de los jóvenes desposeídos que esperan un hogar más seguro. BEBES BORNHOFT: La familia Bornhoft está estable- ciendo rápidamente su próxima generación. Los tres hijos de Tad y Kim comenzaron a tener hijos este año, y hoy bautizamos al primogénito de Geoffrey y Kaitlyn. La abuela Kim también preside nuestro grupo Standing Together, cuidando niños cerca y lejos.

TRES BODAS EN TRES SEMANAS: Celebraremos tres bodas antes de fin de año, y luego ninguna hasta mediados de marzo. Oren por una vida ma- trimonial larga y feliz por Araceli y Ruperto, por Lauren y Eric, y por Ofelia y Mark.

ROSA Y ANDRES: 25 AÑOS: Rosa Martínez y An- drés Ramírez celebrarán un cuarto de siglo de ma- trimonio fructífero en la misa del próximo sábado a las 5:00 PM. Además de traer a sus tres buenos hijos a nuestra comunidad, también catequizan los adultos, brindan un seminario de enriquecimiento matrimonial de verano, y sirven al altar. ¡Gracias por compartir con nosotros!

CUMPLEAÑOS FAMILIARES: Cada año mi familia mezcla las fiestas de Thanksgiving con las de cumpleaños: dos de mis hermanas celebran otro año a fines de noviembre;

nuestro hermano Denis cumplió 50 años el lunes pasado; y nuestra madre nació hace 87 años el vjueves. ¡Dios bendi- ga las celebraciones familiares durante todo el año!
