SPRINGTIME IN THE DESERT
The gospel in this first Sunday of Lent gives us the story of the temptation of Jesus in the desert/wilderness where he spent 40 days before he started his public ministry. This story is also the most immediate biblical foundation of the Lenten season. But why the desert? Why not the beach? Why not in the middle of a bustling city?
Lent comes from the Germanic word
“lencten” which means springtime. But if
it’s springtime, why is it that the primary environment that Lent is proposing to us is the wilderness, where it is dry, arid, and almost no vegetation is found. There seems to be a contradiction. How can spring happen in the wilderness? Well, if Lent is supposed to be the springtime of the soul, the seed of the Gospel of Jesus can only bloom or spring up if we are able to center ourselves back to the essentials, to the fundamentals. God’s word needs focus, total attention, less distractions and the best place for that is the wilderness where we are stripped of the usual conveniences, so there we have more time to consider the things that are truly important. – no competing gadgets, no internet, no television, no cellphones, and also no people around. Just with ourselves and with God! And so, for God’s word to bloom in us once again, we first have to visit the wilderness.
And when we are only are with ourselves and with God, we are able to travel to the deepest corners of our hearts, we are given the opportunity to unmask those things that we have been hiding under the rug that weakens the spirit, those temptations that win us over and over and over again.
For springtime (that is the blossoming of God’s Word) to take place in us in this season of Lent, are you ready to pursue the riches hidden in Christ and give up the riches or wealth that the world pursues? Only then the desert or the wilderness will bloom and spring will be realized.

FRANCISCAN FRIARS OF THE RENEWAL
Br. Rufino Joseph Poster joined the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal in 2012. After his initial 4 years living in Friaries in NYC he was assigned to Honduras where he has been now for 5 years. In Honduras he learned Spanish, ran a lunch program for children in the neighborhood, and has now been serving at Asociacion Hogar Nazareth. AHN is a project founded 34 years ago with over 40 employees, it has 3 Homes that are a refuge and Home for over 80 children coming from vulnerable situations. He works particularly with the boys and with the benefactors who support the AHN mission.

BR. RUFINO JOSEPH POSTER
Fr. Richard Roemer has been a member of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal since 1990. Ordained in 1998, he has served his congregation and the Church in a variety of services for the poor, formation and evangelization. He helped to initiate ministries such as the St. Francis Center for youth in the Bronx, St. Joseph’s Soup Kitchen in Harlem, and St. Anthony Shelter for Renewal for homeless men in the Bronx. He served 3 terms as Vicar General of the CFR’s.
He is currently serving at the friars' medical center and an orphanage in Comayagua, Honduras. He also enjoys preaching retreats and missions and accompanying people in spiritual direction.

PREPARÁNDONOS PARA EL SÍNODO
El Papa Francisco y nuestro arzobispo Alexander han estado invitando-nos a los católicos a preparar el camino al SÍNODO con mucha oración. ¿Qué es un sínodo? En pocas palabras, es un proceso de discernir juntos, en este caso, con la ayuda del Espíritu Santo, las maneras y direcciones en que Dios nos está queriendo dirigir como Iglesia.
¿Cuáles deben ser nuestros objetivos y nuestras metas, individual-mente y como familias y comunidades, para llevar el mensaje de Jesucristo a un mundo que tanto lo necesita? ¿Cómo lo debemos hacer? ¿Qué es lo que más nos puede ayudar a cooperar con esta obra tan urgente de Dios?
Aquí en Santa Cecilia, como en las otras parroquias, tendremos la oportunidad de reunirnos y para orar, discernir y platicar juntos sobre lo que escuchamos en nuestros corazones.

Mis Queridos Hermanos en Cristo:
En esta semana, entramos, como IGLESIA, en la temporada sagrada de CUARESMA. Esto significa varias cosas.
En primer lugar, estos 40 días nos ayudan a prepararnos para celebrar y entrar profundamente en el misterio de nuestra salvación. Como sabemos, esto se lleva a cabo por la Pasión, Muerte, y Resurrección de nuestro divi-no Salvador, Jesucristo. Cada año tenemos la gran oportunidad de conectarnos nuevamente con este hermosísimo regalo de Dios.
Segundo, la manera concreta en que podemos participar en esta experiencia de Jesús es a través de las 3 prácticas que resaltaron en el evangelio del MIERCOLES DE CENIZA: la oración, el ayuno, y las obras de caridad. Hagamos el compromiso con Dios para intensificar estas disciplinas a lo largo de estos 40 días cuaresmales; como resultado, experimentaremos entonces gracias muy especiales durante Semana Santa y el tiempo de PASCUA.
EN EL DESIERTO, JESUS SUFRE LAS TENTACIONES
Hoy escuchamos en el evangelio la manera insidiosa en que el demonio intenta desviar a Jesús de la misión que tiene del Padre, ofreciéndole, aparentemente, un camino más fácil y agradable para lograrlo: un camino sin tanto dolor, sufrimiento y rechazo – en el fondo, sin la cruz.
Jesús reconoce claramente las implicaciones de este camino satánico, y lo rechaza rotundamente 3 veces. El demonio se retira, por lo tanto, del campo de batalla, pero sólo para esperar nuevas oportunidades para
intervenir y destruir el plan de Salvación de Dios.
CLÍNICAS DE VISIÓN Y DENTAL
Los Promotores de Salud de la parroquia estarán coordinando talleres en Santa Cecilia de VISIÓN, y DENTAL. Se llevarán a cabo entre enero y abril del presente con la ayuda de la universidad Pacific University.
