The holy family family of jesus, mary and joseph
Reflection in preparation for
next weekend’s Gospel
"After three days they found him in the
tem-ple, sitting in the midst of the teachers,
listen-ing to them and asklisten-ing them questions, and all
who heard him were astounded at his
under-standing and his answers." As we celebrate
the feast of the Holy Family, this Gospel
ex-poses us to a strange tension. While this
fami-ly is one we can look to for an example, they
are not quite the same family unit as everyone
else. There is an otherness to Jesus, something
profound. And yet, perhaps on second
thought, are our families so different?
When Mary and Joseph encountered Jesus in
the temple, "they were astonished."
But at what? Mary's response is surprised.
They're not astonished that Jesus is preaching
in a place for respected teachers. They're not
astonished that their son has captured the
at-tention of the wisest men of the time period.
They're astonished at his seemingly
disobedi-ent behavior! "Son, why have you done this to
us? Your father and I have been looking for
you with great anxiety." All our children have
an "otherness" about them, something that
makes them unique and different. They are
distinctly not "me." What will our own
chil-dren become? What temple will they wander
off to? Who will they astound?

Dear brother and sisters, Jesus is born but have we
found Him yet?
Once again we are in the season of Advent indicating that Christ-mas is just around the corner. Many of us may remember the once popular hymn during this season, "Oh Come Divine Messiah" whose lyrics go like this:
Oh come divine Messiah
The world in silence waits the day When hope shall sing of triumph And sadness flees away
Yes, those days life was very simple as we waited in silence with full of hope that soon good will soon triumph over evil thereby ridding our lives of sadness. Those words were so meaningful and bring back pleasant memories of Christmas of the yesteryears. Christmas is a commemoration of God's coming into the world. He came for all of us - believers and non-believers alike. His birth should bring us hope and triumph which will dispel the sadness from our lives. Let us take a moment to look around to recognize Him in those who do not have joy and peace in their lives. Let us do the little within our means to allevi-ate the pain and misery in their lives. Let us do whallevi-atever we can to give them the hope that triumph will one day wipe out the sadness in the hearts. We too, like Jesus, must have the humility to come down from our positions of comfort and power to meet Him in the people around us. If we isolate ourselves from the masses by building a fortress around us with all our wealth and power together with greed, selfishness and pride, then we can keep waiting for Jesus all our lives but it will only be in vain.
To us then His birth into this world, that is Christmas, will be just another day to celebrate, eat, drink and make merry. It will never become the day when hope shall sing of triumph and sadness flees away.

La sagrada familia de jesus, maria y jose
En preparación para la lectura
de la siguiente semana
Hoy, la Liturgia celebra la Fiesta de la Sagrada Familia. Es el Domingo que sigue la Navidad. La lectura del Evangelio nos narra la verdadera historia sobre la familia de Jesús en aquel tiempo. En nuestros tiempos las familias
también tienen su propia historia y realidad. El Papa Francisco nos ayuda a ver esa realidad. Nos dice que la familia es para toda la vida: "Un largo viaje que no es por partes, que dura toda la vida, y necesitan la ayuda de Jesús para caminar juntos, con confianza, para acogerse, uno al otro cada día, y perdonarse cada día, y esto es im-portante en las familias, saber perdonarse. Porque todos nosotros tenemos defectos. ¡Todos! Y a veces hacemos cosas que no son buenas, hacen mal a los demás. Tener el coraje de pedir perdón cuando en la familia nos
equivocamos". (10 Reflexiones sobre la familia). Nada que separe a la familia es aceptable,
ninguna ley en el mundo debe ser impuesta para este caso. La separación de la familia no ayuda a la construcción fundamental de la persona. Ahí, en el hogar, es donde se crece, se apoya y se comunica el amor. Sin embargo, vivimos en una sociedad de caducidad, lo estable cansa y aburre. Nos decimos, "Ya es viejo debo cambiarlo." Así pasa muchas veces que las familias se cambian fácilmente. Uno deja a su pareja sin importarse por los hijos ni por el hogar. La familia de Nazaret es el ejemplo a seguir, reunámonos alrededor de la Eucaristía con ese propósito de compartir el pan, de invitar a Dios como centro del corazón que es el hogar. ¿Quién y qué predomina en tu familia?

Celebramos el nacimiento de Jesucristo, el Hijo de Dios. Y yo me pregunto si ya hemos sido capaces de reflexionar sobre lo que verdaderamente significa tener una “Feliz Navidad”.
Si fuéramos a una comunidad marginada y viéramos cómo pasan la Navidad muchas personas, seguramente diríamos: “Pobre gente, no tienen nada para poder pasar una Feliz Navidad”. ¿Creo yo que tener una Feliz Navidad necesariamente significa tener comida, bebida, música, luces de colores y a toda
mi familia alrededor?
Cuando uno lee el Evangelio se da cuenta que tener una Feliz Navidad significa otra cosa muy distinta, que no necesariamente excluyo lo anterior, ya que uno se la puede pasar muy bien con comida, bebida, música, luces de colores y con la familia, pero también se la puede pasar muy mal.
El Evangelio nos dice:
Mientras estaban en Belén, le llegó a María el tiempo de dar a luz y tuvo a su hijo primogénito; lo envolvió en pañales y lo recostó en un pesebre, porque no hubo lugar para ellos en el mesón. En aquella región había unos pastores que pasaban la noche en el campo. Un ángel del Señor se les apareció y la gloria de Dios los envolvió con su luz y se llenaron de temor. El ángel les dijo: ‘No teman. Les traigo una buena noticia, que causará gran alegría a todo el pueblo: hoy les ha nacido, en la ciudad de David, un Salvador, que es el Mesías, el Señor. Como señal: encontrarán al niño envuelto en pañales y recostado en un pesebre’. De pronto se le unió al ángel una multitud del ejército celestial, que alababa a Dios diciendo: ‘¡Gloria a Dios en el cielo, y en la tierra paz a los hombres de buena voluntad’! Se fueron los pastores a toda prisa y encontraron a María, a José y al Niño, recostado en el pesebre. Los pastores se volvieron a sus campos, alabando y glorificando a Dios por todo cuanto habían visto y oído, según lo que se les había anunciado.
En este pasaje nos damos cuenta que no puede existir una Feliz Navidad sin haber hecho una profunda y seria experiencia de Cristo. Y, a lo mejor, todos los agujeros que hay en tu corazón, todas las resquebrajaduras que hay en tu existencia, todos los miedos que hay en tu alma, se deben a que no ha habido un ángel que te diga: “Feliz Navidad. Hoy te ha nacido un Salvador, que es el Mesías, el Señor”.
Cada uno tendría que preguntarse con mucha seriedad si ya ha hecho esta profunda y seria experiencia de Cristo. Porque, pudiera ser que por diferentes causas, nos pudiéramos haber olvidado
dónde está la auténtica felicidad. ¿No has buscado la felicidad en muchas partes y no la has encontrado? ¿Por qué te empeñas en buscarla donde no está? ¿Por qué no quieres ir a Belén como
los pastores? ¿Por qué te da miedo?
A todos nos puede costar mucho encontrar a este Niño en un pesebre. Nos puede doler descubrir que es en la pequeñez, en la debilidad donde está la experiencia de Cristo.
Yo estoy seguro que a través de la vida de todos Dios se ha cruzado muchas veces, pero como lo ha hecho como un niño envuelto en pañales y recostado sobre un pesebre, no hemos sabido reconocerlo, con lo que hemos perdido la oportunidad de encontrarnos con Cristo.
Nunca olvidemos que generalmente no es en lo espectacular donde Dios Nuestro Señor se va a encontrar contigo, sino que lo va a hacer donde pensarías que Él no puede estar: en la pequeñez, en la pobreza, en la debilidad, en la humildad, en el abandono, en la humillación.
