This is the forty-first issue of the Yearbook of Forest Products. The Yearbook contains annual data on the production and trade in forest products for the years 1976-1987, and direction of trade in 1986 and 1987.
The publication of the Yearbook has been made possible by the cooperation of governments which have supplied most of the information in the form of replies to questionnaires. It has been compiled by the Forestry Department of FAO in collaboration with the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE).
The tables have been arranged in three parts. The first part contains tables dealing with the volume of production and the volume and value of trade. The second part contains tables dealing with the direction of trade. The third part contains tables showing the unit value in trade of some commodities. These have been obtained by dividing total value by total volume traded. The figures for exports represent average f.o.b. values, while those for imports represent average c.i.f. values.
The tables in the first part present data for the 12 years 1976-1987. The tables have been arranged so that, for any commodity, the tables showing data on production, imports and exports of that commodity follow one another. Because the commodity sub-divisions for production and for trade statistics differ, the series for certain commodities include only production statistics, and for certain others only trade statistics. In general, tables for roundwood are followed by those for sawnwood, panel products, pulp and paper in that order.
Within these groupings, tables totalling all commodities in the group come first, followed by the partial aggregates with their component commodity tables.
The direction-of-trade tables, shown in the second part, are based on export data. These trade matrices show all countries with a total export trade amounting to 1 percent of the total. The total world exports are identified with an exporting country and an importing country, or with a total for other countries where the trading partners are not identified, or their total trade in the commodity is less than
1 percent. Data are reported for the latest two years.
As in previous issues, this volume includes estimates made by FAO and data obtained from sources other than the official replies to questionnaires. In presenting the 12-year series, account has been taken of revisions suggested officially or of new information from other sources. Thus, figures published in earlier issues may have been revised in preparing this series. In certain cases, the data provided by countries are stated in different units or in different kinds of measurement frorn those used in the Yearbook. For presentation in the Yearbook it has been necessary to convert to the standard units. The coefficients used for conversion to the metric system are shown on page xlviii. It is hoped that countries will re-examine the estimates and provide FAO with more accurate figures when these appear wrong. A table of exchange rates applicable to the 12 years of the data series is included next to the standard conversion factor tables.
Country and commodity names have had to be abbreviated in computer-generated tables. The names of continents, countries and regions appear abbreviated in English only. The list of countries and continents (page xliv) shows the countries in the order in which they appear in the tables. In this list the abbreviated name in English is shown together with the full name in English, French and Spanish. The countries included in each economic class and region are shown on the page following this Introduction. Commodity and commodity aggregate names are shown in an abbreviated form in English, French and Spanish. In the list of commodity names, the commodity aggregates and individual commodities are listed in the order in which they occur in the Yearbook and each is briefly defined. These definitions follow those contained in Classification and Definitions of Forest Products, FAO, Rome, 1982, insofar as the classification used in the Yearbook coincides. In the case of exports and imports, the commodity name is preceded by the code number of the United Nations Standard International Trade Classification (SITC), Rev. 2.
Figures are generally rounded to the nearest 1 000 units. When the name of a country is given without a corresponding numerical entry, this means that recorded quantities are less than 500 units and are rounded to zero. The regional totals, however, are computed from unrounded figures and so include such small quantities.
The notes on the tables provide an explanation of the main cases where the data are not strictly consistent with the normal definitions applying to the quantities shown in the table. They deal with the conversion of data into the standard units used in the tables and with certain special estimates that have had to be made in order to complete the tables. Where official statistics were not available an indication is given identifying if either an FAO estimate (F) or data from a non-official source (*) have been used.
Pitprops are included with other industrial roundwood and the separate table for sleepers has been discontinued.

General terms and commodity names used in the Yearbook are listed below and briefly defined. As far as possible the definitions used follow Classification and Definitions of Forest Products, FAO, Rome, 1982.
GENERAL TERMS
CONIFEROUS All woods derived from trees classified botanically as Gymnospermae e.g. fir (Ab/es), parand pine (Araucaria), deodar (Cedrus), ginkgo (Ginkgo), larch (Larbc), spruce (Picea), pine, chir, kail (Pinus), etc. These are generally referred to as softwoods.
NON-CONIFEROUS All woods derived from trees classified botanically as Angiospermae e.g. maple (Acer), alder (Alnus), ebony (Diospyros), beech (Fagus), lignum vitae (Guiaicum), poplar (Populus), oak (Quercus), sal (Shorea), teak (Tectona), casuarina (Casuarina), etc. These are generally referred to as broadleaved or hardwoods.
PRODUCTION The total production of primary products is reported, even though a portion may immediately be consumed in the production of another commodity (e.g. wood pulp, which may immediately be converted into paper as part of a continuous process). An exception is made in the case of veneer production, which excludes veneer sheets used for plywood production within the country.
IMPORTS Products for domestic consumption or processing shipped into the country. "In-transit" shipments are excluded; in certain instances, imports for re-export may be included. Values are normally c.i.f.
EXPORTS All quantities of domestic origin or manufacture shipped out of the country. As indicated above under "Imports", re-exports may be included. "In-transit" shipments are excluded. Values are normally f.o.b.
REMOVALS In earlier issues of the Yearbook the term "Removals" was used to designate the quantities removed from forests and outside the forest during the calendar year or during the forestry year. In this issue, the term is synonymous with roundwood production.
COMMODITY AGGREGATES AND COMMODITY NAMES
The commodity aggregates or commodity names are listed below in the order in which the tables occur. Separate definitions are not provided for coniferous (C) and non-coniferous (NC) components where the general definition given above applies. Where there is no suffix, the commodity aggregate or commodity includes both coniferous and non-coniferous components. The name used in the trade tables is preceded by the Standard International Trade Classification (SITC), Rev. 2 code number. (The prefix EX to a code number indicates that not all commodities listed under the code number are included in the statistics shown.) The commodity make-up of the commodity aggregates is summarized on pages xvi and xvii. Where the abbreviated computer name is not self-explanatory, the full name is given at the beginning of the definition.

Plywood, veneer plywood, core plywood, including veneered wood, blockboard, laminboard and battenboard. Other plywood, such as cellular board and composite plywood. Veneer plywood is plywood manufactured by bonding together more than two veneer sheets. The grain of alternate veneer sheets is crossed generally at right angles. Core plywood is plywood whose core (i.e.
central layer, generally thicker than the other plies) is solid and consists of narrow boards, blocks or strips of wood placed side by side, which may or may not be glued together. (This item includes veneered wood in sheets or panels in which a thin veneer of wood is affixed to a base, usually of inferior wood, by glueing under pressure.) Cellular board is a plywood with a core of cellular construction while composite plywood is a plywood with core or certain layers made of material other than solid wood or veneers.
A sheet material manufactured from small pieces of wood or other ligno-cellulosic materials (e.g. chips, flakes, splinters, strands, shreds, shives, etc.) agglomerated by use of an organic binder together with one or more of the following agents: heat, pressure, humidity, a catalyst, etc. (Flaxboard is included. Wood wool and other particle boards, with inorganic binders, are excluded.)
The aggregate includes compressed and non-compressed fibreboard.
Fibreboard (fibre building board). A panel manufactured from fibres of wood or other ligno-cel- lulosic materials with the primary bond deriving from the felting of the fibres and their inherent adhesive properties. Bonding materials and/or additives may be added. Fibreboard is usually flat-pressed but may be moulded. Non-compressed includes insulating board with density of not more than 0.40 g/cm3. Compressed includes hardboard with a density greater than 0.40 g/cm3.
(Similar products made from pieces of wood, wood flour or other ligno-cellulosic material with added binders are excluded as are, for example, boards of gypsum or other mineral material.)
PULP
Figures are given in weight (air-dry = 10 percent moisture).
The following commodities are included in this aggregate: mechanical, semi-chemical, chemical and dissolving wood pulp.
Wood pulp obtained by grinding or milling the following into fibres: coniferous or non-coniferous rounds, quarters, billets, etc. or through refining coniferous or non-coniferous chips. Also called groundwood pulp and refiner pulp. It may be bleached or unbleached. This aggregate excludes exploded and defibrated pulp, and includes chemi-mechanical and thermo-mechanical pulp.
Wood pulp, chemi-mechanical and semi-chemical. Wood pulp obtained by subjecting coniferous or non-coniferous wood to a series of mechanical and chemical treatments, none of which alone is sufficient to make the fibres separate readily. According to the order and importance of the treatment, such pulp is variously named: semi-chemical, chemi-groundwood, chemi-mechanical, etc. It may be bleached or unbleached.
Sulphate (kraft) and soda and sulphite wood pulp, except dissolving grades, bleached, semi-bleached and unbleached. Where detail is available, statistics for the following four component pulps are given:
Wood pulp, sulphite, except dissolving grades. Wood pulp obtained by mechanically reducing coniferous or non-coniferous wood to small pieces that are subsequently cooked in a pressure vessel in the presence of a bi-sulphite cooking liquor. Bi-sulphites such as ammonium, calcium, magnesium and sodium are commonly used. The two classes are bleached (including semi-bleached) and unbleached.
Wood pulp, sulphate (kraft) and soda, except dissolving grades. Wood pulp obtained by mechanically reducing coniferous or non-coniferous wood to small pieces that are subsequently cooked in a pressure vessel in the presence of sodium hydroxide cooking liquor (soda pulp) or a mixture of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulphite cooking liquor (sulphate pulp). The two classes are bleached (including semi-bleached) and unbleached.
Wood pulp, dissolving grades. Chemical pulp (sulphate, soda or sulphite) from coniferous or non-coniferous wood, of special quality, with a very high alpha-cellulose content (usually 90 percent and over), readily adaptable for uses other than paper making. These pulps are always bleached. They are used principally as a source of cellulose in the manufacture of products such as man-made fibres, cellulosic plastic materials, lacquers and explosives.
Pulp of fibrous vegetable materials other than wood. Including straw, bamboo, bagasse, esparto,
other reeds or grasses, cotton linters, flax, hemp, rags, other textile wastes. Used for the
manufacture of paper, paperboard and fibreboard.
Figures are given in weight.
