Buena Nueva Good News Reflection

Where did the Faith of the Magi come from?

The Season of Christmas includes the celebration of the arrival of the magi from the East. Let’s consider the humble adoration of the magi for the Christ child.

The magi were Gentiles, and the Greek word “magi”

meant oriental scientists. Despite sometimes being translated as “astrologers,” their visit to the manger

does not validate astrology.

Because they were not Jews, their determination to meet the Jewish savior says much about what the

word “epiphany” means. The magi are good examples of believing in the importance of Jesus even without understanding what it would mean to

them personally or to the rest of the world.

They worshiped Jesus as a King-Messiah before they knew how he would become king or how his

kingship would save the world from evil. As scientific scholars, they had studied religious writings from beyond the scope of their own culture.

Then, they acted on faith in response to the Spirit of God who activated them, and it changed their lives.

Only the Spirit of God can move someone to have faith, because faith is a gift of the Holy Spirit (see 1 Corinthians 12). The word “epiphany” means

discovery, a revelation that changes our lives.

Epiphanies are gifts from God as he collaborates with our desire for new growth.

We can imagine how the magi felt when they experienced an epiphany in the presence of the Christ

child. Although they did not understand how this

baby from a poor family could become king, they remembered him for the rest of their lives and listened for news from the land of Israel about Jesus.

We know that they heard about his crucifixion and learned what his followers were teaching about it, for

they became Christians -- their relics have been venerated since very early times.

Questions for Personal Reflection:

What sign from God, like the star that the magi followed, are you waiting to see? What signs is God

already showing you? These are evidence that he is working in your life. What epiphany -- new understanding -- is Jesus giving you about what God

is doing in your life?

Este Tiempo de Navidad incluye la celebración de la llegada de los magos de Oriente. Consideremos la adoración humilde de los magos hacia Cristo niño.

Los magos eran gentiles y la palabra griega para

“descubrimiento,” una revelación que cambia nuestras vidas. Las epifanías son dones de Dios que

responde a nuestro deseo de un nuevo crecimiento.

Podemos imaginarnos cómo se sintieron los magos cuando experimentaron una epifanía en la presencia de Cristo niño. Aunque no comprendieron cómo este

bebé de una familia pobre podía convertirse en rey, lo recordaron por el resto de sus vidas y oyeron noticias de la tierra de Israel sobre Jesús. Sabemos que oyeron hablar de su crucifixión y escucharon lo

que sus seguidores enseñaban, porque se convirtieron en cristianos – sus reliquias han sido

veneradas desde los primeros tiempos.

Preguntas para la Reflexión Personal:

¿Qué signos de Dios, como la estrella que los magos siguieron, estás esperando ver? ¿Qué signos ya te ha estado mostrando Dios? Estas son evidencias de que él está trabajando en tu vida. ¿Qué epifanía – nuevo conocimiento – te está dando Jesús sobre lo que Dios

está haciendo en tu vida?

Epifanía: La Manifestación del

Señor

Epifanía significa "manifestación". Jesús se da a conocer. Aunque Jesús se dio a conocer en diferentes momentos a diferentes personas, la Iglesia celebra como epifanías tres eventos:

*Su Epifanía ante los Reyes Magos (Mt 2, 1-12)

*Su Epifanía a San Juan Bautista en el Jordán

*Su Epifanía a sus discípulos y comienzo de Su vida pública con el milagro en Caná.

La Epifanía que más celebramos en la Navidad es la primera.. La fiesta de la Epifanía tiene su origen en la Iglesia de Oriente. A diferencia de Europa, el 6 de enero tanto en Egipto como en Arabia se celebraba el solsticio, festejando al sol victorioso con evocaciones míticas muy antiguas. Epifanio explica que los paganos celebraban el solsticio invernal y el aumento de la luz a los trece días de haberse dado este cambio; nos dice además que los paganos hacían una fiesta significativa y suntuosa en el templo de Coré. Cosme de Jerusalén cuenta que los paganos celebraban una fiesta mucho antes que los cristianos con ritos nocturnos en los que gritaban: "la virgen ha dado a luz, la luz crece".

Los Reyes Magos

Mientras en Oriente la Epifanía es la fiesta de la Encarnación, en Occidente se celebra con esta fiesta la revelación de Jesús al mundo pagano, la verdadera Epifanía. La celebración gira en torno a la adoración a la que fue sujeto el Niño Jesús por parte de los tres Reyes Magos (Mt 2 1-12) como símbolo del reconocimiento del mundo pagano de que Cristo es el salvador de toda la humanidad. De acuerdo a la tradición de la Iglesia del siglo I, se relaciona a estos magos como hombres poderosos y sabios, posiblemente reyes de naciones al oriente del Mediterráneo, hombres que por su cultura y espiritualidad

cultivaban su conocimiento de hombre y de la naturaleza esforzándose especialmente por mantener un contacto con Dios. Del pasaje bíblico sabemos que son magos, que vinieron de Oriente y que como regalo trajeron incienso, oro y mirra; de la tradición de los primeros siglos se nos dice que fueron tres reyes sabios: Melchor, Gaspar y Baltazar.

Hasta el año de 474 AD sus restos estuvieron en Constantinopla, la capital cristiana más importante en Oriente; luego fueron trasladados a la catedral de Milán (Italia) y en 1164 fueron trasladados a la ciudad de Colonia (Alemania), donde permanecen hasta nuestros días. El hacer regalos a los niños el día 6 de enero corresponde a la conmemoración de la generosidad que estos magos tuvieron al adorar al Niño Jesús y hacerle regalos tomando en cuenta que "lo que hiciereis con uno de estos pequeños, a mi me lo hacéis" (Mt. 25, 40); a los niños haciéndoles vivir hermosa y delicadamente la fantasía del acontecimiento y a los mayores como muestra de amor y fe a Cristo recién nacido.

Epiphany: means

"manifestation". Jesus makes himself known. Although Jesus made himself known at different times to different people, the Church celebrates as epiphanies three events:

* His Epiphany before the Magi (Mt 2, 1-12)

* His Epiphany to Saint John the Baptist in the Jordan

* His Epiphany a His disciples and the beginning of His public life with the miracle at Cana.

The Epiphany that we celebrate most at Christmas is the first. The feast of the Epiphany has its origin in the Church of the East. Unlike Europe, on January 6 both in Egypt and in Arabia, the solstice was celebrated, celebrating the victorious sun with ancient mythical evocations.

Epiphanius explains that the pagans celebrated the winter solstice and the increase of light thirteen days after this change occurred; He also tells us that pagans held a significant and sumptuous feast in the temple of Korah. Cosme of Jerusalem tells that the pagans celebrated a cele- bration long before the Christians with nocturnal rites in which they shouted: "the virgin has given birth, the light grows".

The Three wise men

While in the East the Epiphany is the feast of the Incarnation, in the West the revelation of Jesus to the pagan world, the true Epiphany, is celebrated with this feast. The celebration revolves around the adoration to which the Child Jesus was subjected by the three Wise Men (Mt 2 1-12) as a symbol of the recognition of the pagan world that Christ is the savior of all humanity. According to the tradition of the Church of the first century, these magicians are related as powerful and wise men, possibly kings of nations east of the Mediterranean, men who by their culture and spirituality cultivated their knowledge of man and nature striving especially for maintaining a contact with God. From the biblical passage we know that they are magicians, that they came from the East and that as a gift they brought incense, gold and myrrh;

From the tradition of the first centuries we are told that they were three wise kings: Melchior, Gaspar and Baltazar. Until the year of 474 AD his remains were in Constantinople, the most important Christian capital in the East; then they were transferred to the cathedral of Milan (Italy) and in 1164 they were transferred to the city of Cologne

(Germany), where they remain to this day. Making gifts to children on

January 6 corresponds to the commemoration of the generosity that

these magicians had when they worshiped the Child Jesus and made

gifts taking into account that "what you do with one of these children,

you do it to me" (Mt. 25, 40); to the children making them live

beautifully and delicately the fantasy of the event and the elders as a

sign of love and faith to the newborn Christ.

The image of the Magi kneeling before the infant Jesus and opening their treasure chests for Him is an image that we should all try to follow each day. In gratitude for

all that we have been given, we are called to generously share all of our gifts, not just the ones we pick and choose. God wants us to be generous with everything, but especially that one thing that means the most to you.
