Father Abraham Velluvelil, Superior General of
the Missionaries of St. Francis de Sales, will give
a Lenten Retreat for our parish on Monday,
March 30 and March 31, called
“The Family Fully
Alive in Christ”.
It will begin at 7:00 pm in the
Church each night.
I hope you will join us as we enter into Holy
Week and the Passion of our Lord.
FOR APRIL
Universal: Creation That people may learn to respect creation and care for it as a gift of God.
Evangelization: Persecuted Christians That persecuted Christians may feel the consoling presence of the Risen Lord and the solidarity of all the Church.
Palm Sunday: Cycle B
Holy Week reminds us of the Paschal Mystery of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ. And we begin this journey on Palm Sunday. Jesus is the
Suffering Servant as described by Prophet Isaiah in the 1st Reading. What happens to Jesus during Holy Week has been best summarized by St. Paul in today’s 2nd Reading. Out of love for us, Jesus humbled himself, suffered and died on the Cross. And God the Father exalted him by raising him from death. (Phil 2:6-11)
In the Passion narrative of the Gospel, we see the same people who shouted on Palm Sunday “Hosanna to the Son of David” shouting aloud on Good Friday “Crucify him.” When we look at the Crucifix and see Jesus hanging there, many questions should arise in our minds: “How did Jesus, the Son of God get there?” “Who did this to him?” Clearly, the sins of the people have done this to him. Even today Jesus is still being crucified through the evil actions, jealousy, hatred, and selfishness of the people in the world. Our sins, yours and mine; we are the crucifiers.
We have a choice to stop being crucifiers and become cross-bearers and liberators. When we allow the goodness within us to shine forth through our love and service, then it would help in lifting the crosses from others’ lives. Think of the ways and means through which we could be liberators and promoters of life in our families and in our society.
See you all at our Lenten Retreat on Monday and Tuesday at 7 pm! Fr. Sunny

Padre Sunny

GLIMPSES OF DIVINE MERCY
(As we prepare for Divine Mercy Sunday – April 12th)
The Three O’clock Hour
Jesus told St. Faustina: “At the three o’clock hour, implore my Mercy, especially for sinners; and if only for a brief moment, im-merse yourself in my Passion, particularly in my abandonment at
the moment of agony. This is the hour of great mercy for the whole world… in this hour, I will refuse nothing to the soul that
makes a request of Me in virtue of my Passion.” The Novena beginning on Good Friday Jesus told St. Faustina: “I desire that during these nine days, you bring souls to the fount
of my Mercy… for whatever graces they need in the hardships of life, and especially at the hour of death. Each day you will bring to my Heart a different group of souls and you
will immerse them in this ocean of my Mercy.”
(from The Diary of St. Faustina)
Women of Atlanta, our
priests need you! There
is a new program in
Atlanta called “El
Cingulo,” or
The Cincture
.
El Cingulo is a group of
women who have agreed
to spiritually adopt one priest each and
become his spiritual mother. We offer up our
daily prayers, chores, sufferings, hours of
adoration, and Masses for his sanctification
and well-being. One priest will become your
spiritual son and you will wrap him in prayer
each day and ask our Lord and His Blessed
Mother to keep him holy. Those interested in
hearing more about El Cingulo are asked to
attend a meeting at St. John Neumann
Church on Saturday, April 25, at 10:00 am
in Rooms 1 & 2, followed by Mass and the
opportunity to spiritually adopt a priest.

On “Palm Sunday,” as most people call it, the Church
commemorates Christ’s entrance into Jerusalem to
accomplish his paschal mystery. Accordingly, the memorial of
this event is included in every Mass, with the Procession or
Solemn Entrance into the church while blessed palms are
raised by the congregation.
The gospel of the Passion of the Lord is read, often in choral
reading format. The congregation is invited to take their role
in convicting our Lord to his death, as we do every time we
sin. With this in mind, we thus enter into the holiest week of
the Church year.
The
Mass of Chrism
is traditionally con-celebrated by the Archbishop and his
clergy on the morning of Holy Thursday. However, the Archdiocese of Atlanta
holds this special Mass on Holy Tuesday. The holy oils that are blessed at the
Chrism Mass are then presented at the Mass of the Lord’s Supper in the evening.
The old oils are burned in the sanctuary lamp or returned to earth (buried).
Lent officially ends before the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper, which
begins the Easter Triduum.
During this Mass, John’s gospel is read, recalling Jesus washing the feet of
his apostles. Following a short homily, members of the parish community
are invited to come and have their feet washed… a reminder that we have
been called to serve others, as Jesus did. Sometimes candidates to enter the
Church are chosen, and sometimes it is members of the parish family.
Be
prepared!
Perhaps simple socks and shoes or sandals… just in case!
Notice that there are lots of hosts left over after Communion. The
additional Eucharist is reserved for the Liturgy (not Mass!) of the Lord’s
Passion on Good Friday, since no Mass can be celebrated. The Blessed
Sacrament will be carried in procession by the clergy and altar servers to the
Altar of Repose in the lower level of the church. The community is
dismissed in silence after the procession and is invited to sit with our Lord in
adoration until midnight. We have entered into the “sacred three days” or
“Triduum”. The altar is stripped and the baptismal font is emptied.
Fun Fact: The palms that we receive to “hail the
King”, are the same palms that we burn to recall our sin
and failings in our faithfulness to God. Palms that have
been blessed should only be destroyed by fire… thus
bringing them to the church to be burned is
9
www.sjnlilburn.com
Fun Fact: Venerate means “hold in high
esteem.” We venerate the cross to show honor to the wood that bore our Savior. A simple touch or bow is appropriate. This can be done in small groups, or with family members, and need not be done individually or for a prolonged time.***For the sake of courtesy, please
reverence the cross briefly during the
procession.
Further veneration may
take place after the completion of the
Good Friday liturgy.
Please follow the
direction of the deacons and ushers, who
will be assisting to keep the period of
veneration quiet and respectful.
Then, the Church comes together at 7:00 pm on
Good Friday to remember the suffering and death of
our Lord through the choral reading of the Passion.
The Cross of Christ is venerated, meaning all can
come forward to give reverence to the cross which
bore our Savior. Then the General Intercessions of the
Church are chanted, and communion is distributed.
This service is full of reverence and respect.
***You can expect that it will last longer than
one
simple hour
, as we join in the suffering and death
of our Lord… for us!
Really folks, but… let’s spell it out:
No texting during the Veneration of the Cross, or
any worship service. (Sure it’s a long process, but
Jesus didn’t whine about being on the cross!)
No “chit-chat” during the delivery of Sacraments at
the Easter Vigil (or other “slow” spots in the
services)… this year you’ll be able to SEE, thanks
to the projectors!
Ushers and other Liturgical Ministers are there to
assist and guide the faithful… please be respectful
of their role and follow their directions.
How about praying when you are tired or
distracted?
On Good Friday, and, if possible, on Holy
Saturday until the Easter Vigil,
the paschal
fast
is observed to honor the suffering and
death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare
ourselves to share more deeply in his
resurrection.
The time frame from noon to 3:00 pm is
for prayer and meditation. At 12:00 pm, we
will reflect on
The Seven Last Words of
Christ.
At 2:00 pm, the
Stations of the
Cross
will be prayed, followed by
The
Divine Mercy Chaplet
for mercy on our
world. The Chaplet will be prayed
communally at 3:00 pm all nine days of the
novena in the Church (except Easter
Sunday), ushering in Divine Mercy Sunday
at the close of the Easter octave.
10
During the Triduum, the
Church does not have daily
Mass. On Holy Saturday, there
will also be no confessions
heard in the morning or the
afternoon. In fact, except for
the Divine Mercy Novena at
3:00 pm, the Church will have
no activity, in remembrance of
the mystery of Christ’s descent
into hell. In preparation for the
Sacraments of Initiation at the
Easter Vigil Mass, the Church
will used for rehearsals only.
The Easter Vigil Mass
begins in darkness at
nightfall (8:30 pm).
All may
be seated in the Church. Those
who are entering the Church
will gather around a bonfire
and watch as the new paschal
candle is dressed and lit,
representing the light of Christ
entering the darkness of our
world. As the light moves into
the Church, each candle held
by the faithful is lit, spreading
the light of Christ and
representing the faithful
keeping vigilant for the coming
of Christ. While the Church is
lit only in candle light,
salvation history is retold
through several readings and
psalms from the Old
Testament. When the Gloria is
proclaimed, the lights come up
to full brightness, representing
the Light entering the word
through the New Testament
reading that will follow. Then
the Gospel is proclaimed
announcing the empty tomb
and the Risen Lord.
In this spirit of celebration,
the first time, then all the faithful
will receive.
If you have never
experienced the Easter Vigil, it
is the highpoint of our Church
Year!
Those who were in
darkness, have found the
wonderful Light! A reception
follows the Vigil Mass and all
are invited to celebrate the Risen
Lord and our newest believers in
Reynolds Hall!
This is NOT a Mass for
lite-weights!
It is usually no less than
two-and-a-half hours long,
beginning at 8:30 pm. There is
no nursery available, due to the
lateness and length of the Mass.
But the beauty of the symbolism,
Word and Sacrament, is really a
tremendous experience and a
wonderful reminder of our call to
grow our Church.
For a Mass of this
significance to maintain its
reverence and prayerfulness, the
faithful will be guided by
Liturgical Ministers: Sacristans,
Ushers, Priests and Deacons.
PLEASE follow the directions of
the ushers and other assistants,
who are trying to guide you in
the fullness of the experience!
Whether you attend the Vigil

special elements, or Mass on

John Neumann are glad you are
