UNAS PALABRAS DEL PÁRROCO
Estimados hermanos y hermanas,
Feliz Día de las Madres! Hoy es el día en que honramos a nuestras madres, el cual es celebrado (en diferentes fechas) en muchos países alrededor del mundo.
Hoy es un día especial porque nos tomamos un tiempo para pensar y dar gracias a Dios por todo el arduo trabajo que nuestras madres han hecho por nosotros. Hoy es cuando pasamos un tiempo con la persona que amorosamente nos albergó en su vientre, y crecimos sintiendo su apoyo, cariño y amor desde el momento de la concepción, incluso hasta la muerte.
Cada vez que regreso a casa disfruto verdaderamente de la compañía , cuidado, comida y amistad de mi madre.
Fue hace casi dos años atrás cuando estaba yendo de visita a casa, cuando un feligrés de la parroquia donde trabajé anteriormente ofreció llevarme al aeropuerto. En nuestro camino al aeropuerto hablamos de muchas cosas pero una de ellas resonó mucho más: El Día de las Madres. De pronto mi amigo compartió conmigo toda su rabia y frustración. El me dijo: “Padre Elmer, estoy tan molesto por la forma en que me porté con mi madre. Nunca fui bueno con ella. Nunca tuve tiempo para estar con ella. Nunca le di flores, ni siquiera en el Día de las Madres.
Ahora ella está en el cielo y la extraño mucho. Ahora es cuando quiero sentir el amor de mi madre y compartir con ella el amor que siento por ella. Ahora tengo las ganas y el tiempo para pasar con ella pero ella ya no está más aquí. No sea como yo Padre. Ame a su madre. Las madres son las mejores personas del mundo. Por favor cómprele unas flores antes de llegar a casa.” Honestamente, me sentí sorprendido de la franqueza de mi nuevo amigo, además muy agradecido por llevarme al aeropuerto pero sobretodo por la maravillosa oportunidad que tuvimos para conversar. Le observaba y escuchaba atentamente y dejé que hablara. Las palabras que el compartió conmigo aún resuenan en mi vida hasta el día de hoy.
Algunas veces no apreciamos la presencia de nuestras madres.
Cuando las tenemos presentes, se nos hace difícil disfrutar del cariño, apoyo y amor que ellas nos tienen. Si alguien se siente identificado con la historia que les acabo de compartir, les pido que se dirijan al Señor y a nuestra Santísima Madre María y les pidamos su ayuda y su guía. Tengan por seguro que Ellos nos ayudaran a honrar y respetar a nuestras madres como hijos e hijas.
Nuestras madres son ‘las mejores personas del mundo’, como dijo mi nuevo amigo. Espero que se tomen un tiempo para estar con sus madres el día de hoy. Consigan una flores hermosas para ellas y díganles cuanto aprecian todo lo que ellas han hecho por ustedes. Para quienes tienen a sus madres lejos no olviden de darles una llamada telefónica. Y para quienes tienen a sus madres en el cielo, recuerden los bellos momentos que tuvieron con ellas y agradézcanle a Dios por haberles permitido tener una madre como la suya

A WORD FROM THE PASTOR
Dear brothers and sisters,
Happy Mother’s Day! Today is a day when we honor our mothers, which is celebrated (on various days) in many places around the world.
Today is a very special day, when we take a particular time to reflect and give thanks to God for all the hard work our mothers do for us. Today is when we spend time with the person who lovingly allowed us to be nurtured in her womb and grow feeling her support, care, and love from the moment of conception until even death.
Every time I go back home, I truly enjoy the company, care, cooking, friendship and love of my mother. It was about almost two years ago when I was going home to visit my parents. A parishioner of the previous parish I was working at before gave me a ride to the airport. While we were driving to the airport we talked about many things but one resonated more: Mother’s Day. Suddenly, my friend went on to share with me his anger and frustration.
He said: “Fr. Elmer, I am angry the way I was with my mother. I was never good to her. I never took time to spend with her. I never gave her flowers, not even on Mother’s Day. Now she is in heaven and I miss her so much. Now is when I want to feel the love of my mother and share with her the love I feel for her. Now I have the desire and time to spend with her but she is not here anymore. Do not be like me, father. Love your mother. Mothers are the best persons in the world and please buy her flowers before you get home.” Honestly I was shocked about the openness of my new friend and thankful for the ride but also for the wonderful opportunity the ride created for my friend and me. I looked and listened to him attentively and allowed him to speak. The words my new good friend shared with me had and still have an impact in my life today.
Sometimes we take our mothers for granted. When we have them with us, it is hard for us to enjoy their care, support, and love that our mothers always have for us. If some of us feel like the experience of my new friend that I am sharing with you has something to do with us, please let us turn to the Lord and the blessed mother Virgin Mary for their help and guidance. For sure the Lord and Virgin Mary will help us to honor and respect our mothers as their sons and daughters.
Our mothers are ‘the best persons in the world’, as my new friend said. I hope you take time to be with your mothers today. Get some beautiful flowers for her and tell her how much you appreciate all she has done for you. For those of us who have our mothers far away, please let us not forget to call them. For those of you who have your mothers in heaven, recall the good memories you had with your mother and thank God for allowing you to have a mother like yours.

Dear Friends in Christ,
On Mother’s Day, we gratefully celebrate the gifts of love that each of us has received from the woman who gave us life. For thousands of mothers throughout Cook and Lake counties, Mother’s Day will be happier this year because of the life-giving work of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago.
Most of these mothers were homeless or living on very low incomes. Their children are now happy, well-fed and clothed, and housed safely because Catholic Charities provided affordable apartments, employment opportunities and supportive programs for their families that enabled them to achieve a life of stability, self-sufficiency and human dignity.
In 1917, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago was founded to care for the overwhelming number of poor families whom individual parishes could no longer assist. In rapid succession, World War I, the influenza epidemic of 1918-19, and the Great Depression decimated families and destroyed income. As a result, a great number of families were left fatherless, motherless, orphaned or destitute.
As Catholic Charities celebrates its 90th anniversary, poverty still affects women and children and scars families. But Catholic Charities services such as mental health and addiction counseling, job placement, parenting and nutrition programs, and family and domestic violence shelters for women and children, daily improve lives and offer hope to thousands of mothers and their families as they steadfastly work their way back to self-sufficiency.
Last year, Catholic Charities’ 168 programs at 157 locations throughout the archdiocese welcomed and enabled 895,000 individuals in need to find the hope and dignity that are theirs as children of God.
I ask you to support Catholic Charities. By contributing to the annual Mother’s Day Appeal, you are fulfilling Christ’s mandate to love God and our neighbor as ourselves.

Queridos Amigos en Cristo:
En el Día de las Madres celebramos con gratitud el regalo del amor que cada uno de nosotros hemos recibido de la mujer que nos dio la vida. Para miles de mamás alrededor de los Condados de Cook y Lake, el Día de las Madres será más feliz este año debido al trabajo de vida realizado por Caridades Católicas de la Arquidiócesis de Chicago.
Muchas de estas mamás se encontraban sin hogar o viviendo con un sueldo muy bajo. Sus hijos están ahora más contentos, mejor vestidos, mejor alimentados y en una vivienda más segura y dentro de su presupuesto, debido a que Caridades Católicas les ha proporcionado con apartamentos económicos, oportunidades de empleo y programas de apoyo que les brindó una vida estable, segura, digna y autosuficiente.
En 1917, Caridades Católicas de la Arquidiócesis de Chicago fue fundada para atender un gran número de familias pobres, a quienes las parroquias por sí mismas ya no podían asistir. Así mismo, la Primera Guerra Mundial, la influenza epidémica de 1918-19 y la Gran Depresión destruyó familias y empleos. Como resultado, muchas personas se quedaron sin sus padres, huérfanas o destituidas.
Al celebrar Caridades Católicas sus 90 años de servicio, la pobreza sigue afectando a mujeres y niños. Pero los servicios de Caridades Católicas, tales como los de salud mental, consejería sobre adicción, empleo, programas de nutrición, cuidado paternal y asilo para mujeres y niños, ayudan diariamente a mejorar vidas y a ofrecer esperanza a miles de mamás y sus familias que trabajan diligentemente en recuperar su autosuficiencia.
El año pasado, los 168 programas en 157 localidades de Caridades Católicas por toda la Arquidiócesis atendieron y habilitaron a 895,000 individuos en necesidad para encontrar la esperanza y dignidad que les corresponde como hijos e hijas de Dios.
Les pido que apoyen a Caridades Católicas contribuyendo al Fondo Anual del Día de las Madres. De esta manera estarán cumpliendo el mandato de Cristo de amar a Dios y a nuestro prójimo como a nosotros mismos.
