In today’s gospel when Jesus had come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished and said, "Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works? Is this not the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And his brothers James, Simon, and Judas? And his sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this man get all these things?

So they were offended at him. But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house." Now he did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

Even in his own country, Nazareth, Jesus finds not acceptance but rejection. In their envy, although they did not find any fault in his words and miracles, the Nazarenes dismissed him on the basis of the unimportance of his family. The locals insisted that they knew fully well who he is by the identity of his family members.

Where then did this man get all these things? How can he possibly know what he knew? How does he think he has any authority to teach?

Sometimes we find ourselves in this kind of situation especially when someone from a humble background comes to preach to us. Someone who is poor or uneducated.

Sometimes someone who is not from our own race or class.

We tend to dismiss whatever the person is saying as not important. This is exactly the situation Jesus is facing here, because He is without qualifications they did not recognize his authority. His popularity is among the poor and the common people, who listen with delight as He destroys the arguments of the Pharisees and scribes, and outdoes them with his own brilliant rhetoric and responses.

Their failure to recognize the value of what he has to say, their failure to see who He is rather than the familiar figure of a relative from their town, is the failure to perceive the truth. And hence, "He did not perform many mighty works there because of their unbelief." This is the danger of judging by appearances, it affects the quality and depth of our faith.

The question we will ask ourselves today is. Can we recognize the value of what someone has to say even if he is from a very poor background? Do we need a familiar or accepted package to believe ? And if the package is too familiar how do we treat it? Most of the time God uses the simple to shame the mighty. He uses those we do not value to bring message to us. Going through the Bible you can see such figures like Abram who later became Abraham, Moses who was thrown into the river, Joseph who was sold into slavery, just to mention but a few.

All these people and more who came from a very humble background were used by God to deliver a powerful message to his people.

So my dear friends let us be careful how we reject people that bring good news to us especially when they come from a background that we do not appreciate. May God help us to accept his prophets through Christ Our, Lord.

En el evangelio de hoy, cuando Jesús llegó a su país, les enseñó en su sinagoga, de modo que quedaron atónitos y dijeron: "¿De dónde sacó este hombre está sabiduría y estas obras poderosas? ¿No es este el hijo del carpintero? ¿Su madre llamada a María? ¿Y a sus hermanos Santiago, Simón y Judas?

Y a sus hermanas, ¿no están todas con nosotros? ¿De dónde sacó este hombre todas estas cosas? Entonces se ofendieron con él. Pero Jesús les dijo: "A el profeta no es sin honor, excepto en su propio país y en su propia casa. "Ahora él no hizo muchas obras poderosas allí debido a su incredulidad.

Incluso en su propio país, Nazaret, Jesús no encuentra aceptación sino rechazo. En su envidia, aunque no encontraron ninguna falta en sus palabras y milagros, los Nazarenos lo despidieron sobre la base de la falta de importancia de su familia. Los lugareños insistieron en que sabían muy bien quién era por la identidad de los miembros de su familia. ¿De dónde sacó este hombre todas estas cosas? ¿Cómo puede saber lo que sabía?

¿Cómo cree que tiene autoridad para enseñar?

A veces nos encontramos en este tipo de situaciones, especialmente cuando alguien de origen humilde viene a predicarnos. Alguien que es pobre o sin educación. A veces alguien que no es de nuestra propia raza o clase. Tendemos a descartar lo que la persona dice que no es importante.

Esta es exactamente la situación a la que Jesús se enfrenta aquí, porque no tiene calificaciones, no reconocían su autoridad. Su popularidad se encuentra entre los pobres y la gente común, que escuchan con deleite mientras que el destruye los argumentos de los fariseos y los escribas, y los supera con su propia brillante retórica y respuestas.

Su incapacidad para reconocer el valor de lo que tiene que decir, su incapacidad de ver quién es Él, más que la figura familiar de un pariente de su pueblo, es la incapacidad de percibir la verdad. Y por lo tanto, "no realizó muchas obras poderosas allí debido a su incredulidad". Este es el peligro de juzgar por las apariencias, afecta la calidad y la profundidad de nuestra fe.

La pregunta que nos haremos hoy es. ¿Podemos reconocer el valor de lo que alguien tiene que decir, incluso si él es de muy poca experiencia? ¿Necesitamos un paquete familiar o aceptado para creer? Y si el paquete es demasiado familiar,

¿cómo lo tratamos? La mayoría de las veces Dios usa lo simple para avergonzar a los poderosos. Él usa aquellos que no valoramos para traernos un mensaje. Repasando la Biblia se pueden ver figuras como Abram, que más tarde se convirtió en Abraham, Moisés arrojado al río, José, que fue vendido como esclavo, solo por mencionar algunos. Toda esta gente y más que provenían de un origen muy humilde fueron utilizados por Dios para entregar un poderoso mensaje a su pueblo.

Entonces, mis queridos amigos, tengamos cuidado de cómo rechazamos a las personas que nos traen buenas noticias, especialmente cuando provienen de un trasfondo que no apreciamos. Que Dios nos ayude a aceptar a sus profetas a través de Cristo Nuestro Señor.
