Just a Face in the Crowd By Betty Adams
I was invisible for ten years.
Of course not literally, but it felt like I was invisible when I was homeless. No one noticed me, and no one could tell I was homeless. I was just another face in the crowd. I tried not to call attention to my-self. The last thing I wanted was to have someone question me about why I was where I was or to actu-ally figure out that I was homeless. This made for a very lonely existence. Days went by when I only spoke fifteen or twenty words to another human being, and those were the good days because many days went by without me speaking a single word to another human being. Those were the days when I lived in my car, stayed at my storage facility or stayed on the street.
I spent ten years finding shelter at night. A large part of the time I had a car and while that may seem like that makes it easy, you still have to find a place to park your car where you will not be hassled by the cops or random people. Being a woman alone it’s scary out there, although I found a couple of parking lots where I was generally okay. The next thing is you have to get up early and use the re-stroom and be “on your way” because neighbors do not want to see you sleeping in your car.
Being homeless is a constant struggle of trying of trying to find ways to fill your time. Working at that time was out of the question for me because I was struggling with severe depression and anxiety. So I, like other homeless people, spent my day trying to fill my time with something, anything.

Yo fui invisible por diez años.
Por supuesto que no me refiero literalmente, pero es-tar sin hogar me hizo sentir invisible por mucho tiem-po. Nadie notaba mi existencia y nadie se daba cuenta de que yo carecía de un hogar. Yo era tan solo otra cara entre la multitud. Trate de no llamar la atención, lo último que yo quería era que alguien me cuestiona-ra o se diecuestiona-ran cuenta de que yo no tenía un hogar. Esto hizo mi existencia muy solitaria. Hubo días en que tan solo cruzaba 15 o 20 palabras con alguien y eso eran los buenos dias porque la mayoria del tiempo no hablaba con nadie. Esto fue durante el tiempo en que yo vivía en mi auto, bodega o en la calle. Pasé diez años buscando un refugio por las noches. La gran mayoría del tiempo yo tenia mi auto y al-gunos pensaran que eso hacía las cosas más fáciles, pero no era así. Verán, el tener auto implicaba buscar un lugar seguro para estacionarme. En donde no me molestaran los policías o gente desconocida. Siendo una mujer sola, me daba miedo estar en las calles. Aun así, encontré varios lugares en donde podía es-tacionarme por la noche. Pero tenía que madrugar ir al baño, arrancar y mover mi auto pronto ya que a los vecinos les molestaba verme durmiendo en el. Además, estar sin hogar es una lucha constante por tratar de encontrar maneras para pasar el tiempo. En ese momento, trabajar estaba fuera de discusión ya que estaba luchando contra una severa ansiedad y depresión. Así que yo, como tantas otras personas sin hogar me la pasaba tratando de llenar mi día con algo o lo que fuera. No tener hogar sin duda causa efectos adversos a la salud mental.

una amiga me contó sobre un refugio rotatorio de la iglesia en la que estaba. Llamé a mi asistente social de la clínica para personas sin hogar y me dijo que había estado tratando de contactarme por la misma razón. En tan solo un par de días, mi hija me llevó a la iglesia en la que estaban actualmente, que era la Iglesia del Espíritu Santo. ¡Fue una alegría estar en un lugar cálido y cómodo con acceso a una ducha y comidas calientes! Había quince mujeres alojadas en ese refugio temporal de cuatro meses (más tarde llamado Casa de Pueblo y corriendo todo el año). Los voluntarios fueron increíblemente amorosos y afectuosos y solo sentí amor y calidez de parte de cada uno de ellos. Nunca hubo un juicio acerca de ser per-sonas sin hogar y las conversaciones fueron sobre temas generales a menos que decidiéra-mos sacar a la luz nuestra falta de vivienda. Durante la mayoría de las cenas, los voluntari-os se sentaron con nvoluntari-osotrvoluntari-os, algunvoluntari-os compar-tieron los alimentos y otros simplemente con-versaban. In January 2016, while I was living at my storage facility, a friend told me about a rotating church shelter that she was in. I called my social worker at the homeless clinic and she said she had been trying to reach me for the very same shelter. In just a couple of days, my daughter dropped me off at the church they were currently at, Holy Spirit Church. It was such a joy to be in a warm, comfortable place with access to a shower and warm meals! There were fifteen women being housed in their tem-porary four-month shelter (later named Village House and running all year). The volunteers were amazingly loving and nur-turing and I felt nothing but love and warmth from everyone one of them. Never was there any judgement about being homeless and conversations were about general topics unless we chose to bring up our homelessness. Most meals the volun-teers sat with us, some eating with us, and it became a very “family-like: atmos-phere.”
Betty Adams wrote this article for the Casa de Clara March 2019 Newsletter. It has been edited for bulletin purposes. After leaving Village House, Betty moved into Casa de Clara House of Hospitality and as of last fall, has become a Catho-lic Worker with the core team.

Theme: The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) In the Eucharist, Jesus is truly with us. Today we cele-brate the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. Jesus blessed the food, and there was enough to feed all the hungry people. There was even some left over. Jesus teaches us about God’s love. God’s love for us never ends. We can always be filled with his love. We are so blessed to be loved that much. Just as our bodies re-quire the proper nourishment for energy, we also need the proper nourishment for emotional and spiritual needs or hungers. The Gospel is teaching us that, with Jesus, there is more than enough spiritual nourishment to go around. Jesus can satisfy our spiritual hungers, and we can always go back to him for more. As we celebrate the feast of the Body and Blood of Jesus, we are thankful for the gift of the Eucha-rist, the meal that feeds us on our spiritual journey.
Summary: This is one of the narratives that is included in all four gospels and it heralds the abundance of God’s blessings. This feeding goes beyond filling a physical hunger by nourishing the deepest de-sires of the hearts of those who were present. Just as Jesus asked the disciples to supply to the needs of the hungry, we too are commis-sioned to go forth from the Eucharistic Table to attend to the needs of
others. In doing this, we are to be thankful and grateful for the
oppor-tunity to be elements of God’s grace extending from the Lord’s Table
Scripture: Luke 9:11b-17 Then taking the five loaves and two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing over them, broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. They all ate and were satisfied.
Soon it was time to eat. The disciples went to Jesus and asked him to send the people away so that they could get something to eat. "They don't need to go away," Jesus said, "you feed them."
"All we have is five loaves of bread and two fish" the disciples an-swered.
Jesus told the disciples bring him the loaves and fish and to tell every-one to sit down on the grass. Jesus took the loaves and fish and looked up to heaven and gave thanks. He then gave the food to the disciples to give to the people. Everyone ate until they were satisfied. Then the disciples picked up the leftovers and there were twelve baskets full! The Bible tells us that there were five thousand men who were fed plus all the women and children.
Dear Jesus, help us to remember that when we give what we have to you, even a little bit is more than enough. Amen.
Family Discussion: In our age of fast food and eating on the go,
families often find that they are not eating meals together at a dinner table. As a family, look back over the past week and recall how many meals were eaten together and how many meals were eaten alone or on the run.
In the Bible, meals are seen as much more than a means to satis-fy a physical need. The Hebrew people viewed eating a meal as a way of expressing and strengthening their relationship to one another under God's covenant. It is no coincidence that meals are often the setting of Jesus' teaching and miracles in the Gospels. In this Sunday's Gospel, we hear the story of Jesus feeding the crowd of 5,000 people.
Read this Sunday's Gospel, Luke 9:11b-17. Talk about the kinds of hungers that people have in addition to physical hunger. De-scribe the hungers that a family nourishes (love, compassion, forgiveness, laughter, and so on). Together give thanks for the food that Jesus gives us that we celebrate on this Sunday's feast of the Body and Blood of Jesus. Make a commitment to share in this Eucharistic meal together as a family.

Con gran tristeza compartimos que el Obispo Pierre DuMaine, Fundador de la Diócesis de San José falleció en paz el 13 de junio de 2019 a la edad de 87 años.
La misa de su funeral se celebrará el jueves 27 de junio, a las 10:00 de la mañana, en la Cate-dral Basílica de San José.

The mass of Christian Burial will be celebrat-ed on Thursday, June 27, at 10:00 am, at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph in San Jose. THIS SACRED MEAL
Today we celebrate the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Each of the readings includes a blessing and a sharing of food. They remind us of the central place of meals in our lives. Each meal brings to mind other meals: the sharing of cookies and milk, pizza and beer, loaves and fishes, bread and wine. When we prepare a meal for our family, our friends, even strangers, we al-ways put something of ourselves into the preparation and the meal itself. The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ reminds us of what God put into the preparation for this meal that we celebrate today. We share this sacred meal and are transformed as we remember the death of Jesus and the sacrifice that nur-tures our faith, sustains our lives, and supports our work.

Hoy celebramos el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo. Cada una de las lecturas incluyen una bendición y un compartir de alimentos. Lo cual nos recuerda de lo
