Dear Brothers and Sisters,
The noted twentieth century composer Ralph Vaughn Williams wrote a song which connotes the joy and triumph of Easter and the Feast of Pentecost which we celebrate this day. In Hail Thee, Festival Day he writes:
Hail thee, Festival day!
blest day that be hallowed forever;
day when the Lord from heaven shone in the world with his grace.
Hark! In a hundred tongues Christ’s own, his chosen apostles,
preach to a hundred tribes Christ and his wonderful works.
Praises to the Spirit of Life, all praise to the fount of our being,
light that now lightens all, life that in all now abides.
Over these many days since Easter, in the Scriptures we have read about Jesus appearing to his disciples: to the two downcast brothers on the way to Emmaus; to the disciples wherein he greeted them three times with the salutation
“peace be with you!”. Jesus prepared his disciples for his return to his Father in heaven and promised them an advocate, a protector who would infuse their hearts and minds with the fire and zeal to take all that they had heard and learned and go out to the margins and proclaim the Good News. This news would proclaim that salvation is available to all who seek the Lord. The disciples would cure the sick and heal the broken-hearted and forgive sins. As the Gospel of John proclaimed, “I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming.”
We have read about the burgeoning new Church, with the challenges and excitement of the new Christian
communities breaking through geographic spaces from the Jewish roots to the Hellenistic world; of the daring exploits of Paul and Barnabas. In all of this, we have experienced
“grace upon grace”, to use the words of Paul. The indwelling of Jesus Christ, the “new Man” graphed upon the hearts of women and men who came to believe and were convicted of their Christian discipleship.
A few years ago I read a very interesting book entitled The Lonely Man of Faith by Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik. He was a prominent Jewish scholar and philosopher of the twentieth century. In his book, this eminent rabbi speaks to the tension of seeking to be a man of God while firmly ensconced in the world. A particular reflection which resonated with me seems fitting on this Pentecost Sunday.
He wrote, “He looks upon himself as a stranger in modern society, which is technically minded, self-centered, and self- loving, almost in a sickly narcissistic fashion, scoring honor upon honor, piling up victory upon victory, reaching for the distant galaxies, and seeing in the here-and-now sensible world the only manifestation of being.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas,
En Hail Thee, Festival Day, escribe:
¡Salve, día de fiesta!
bendito día que sea santificado para siempre;

As Catholics, we believe the real presence of Christ is in the Eucharist, not merely symbolically or metaphorically, but
in a true, real and substan al way.
The Body of Christ must be immediately consumed by
the person receiving Communion. It is never permissible or reverent for a
person to walk away with Communion in hand.

from the pastor (continued)
What can a man of faith like myself, living by a doctrine which has no technical potential, by a law which cannot be tested in a laboratory, steadfast in his loyalty to an
eschatological vision whose fulfillment cannot be predicted with any degree of probability, let alone certainty, even by the most complexed, advanced mathematical calculations - what can such a man say to a functional, utilitarian society which is saeculum-oriented and whose practical reasons of the mind have long ago supplanted the sensitive reasons of the heart?”
While this insight can appear somewhat overwhelmingly pessimistic, at its heart it inspires us to ponder and reflect upon our relationship with God, our purpose as human beings and what ultimately motivates and moves our actions and engagement with the world. Imagine what the disciples of Jesus were thinking when they tried to reconcile their relationship with Jesus in a world that was hostile to his message. Surely, they tried to reconcile their place in the world with the “sensitive reasons of the heart.”
It is indeed the “sensitive reasons of the heart” for which the Holy Spirit was sent to us as a gift to inspire and impel the followers of Jesus to follow his command to love one another as we love him and to go out and proclaim the Good News to all the nations. The Spirit being attuned to the “sensitive reasons of the heart” gives us the grace and the advocacy we need to follow the Lord’s call for us in our lives, no matter the time, circumstances and challenges we face in our service to the Kingdom. It also calls us to unity as expressed in John’s Gospel today.
Pope Saint Paul VI, in his 1965 encyclical Mysterium Fidei, Mystery of Faith, offered this very beautiful and powerful reflection on the interconnection between unity and the Eucharist. He wrote, “The mystery of faith, that is, the ineffable gift of the Eucharist that the Catholic Church received from Christ, her Spouse, as a pledge of his immense love, is something that she has always devoutly guarded as her most precious treasure, and during the Second Vatican Council she professed her faith and veneration in a new and solemn declaration. In dealing with the restoration of the sacred liturgy, the Fathers of the Council were led by their pastoral concern for the whole Church to regard it as a matter of highest importance to urge the faithful to participate actively, with undivided faith and the utmost devotion, in the celebration of this Most Holy Mystery, to offer it to God along with the priest as a sacrifice for their own salvation and that of the whole world, and to us it as spiritual nourishment.
At the Last Supper, on the night when He was betrayed, our Saviour instituted the Eucharistic Sacrifice of His Body and Blood. He did this in order to perpetuate the Sacrifice of the Cross throughout the centuries until He should come again, and so to entrust to His beloved Spouse, the Church, a memorial of His Death and Resurrection: a sacrament of love, a sign of unity, a bond of charity, a paschal banquet in which Christ is eaten, the mind is filled with grace and a pledge of future glory is given to us.” Amen!
Blessed Pentecost Sunday! Thank you for all of graces which bind us together as a strong family here at Saint Pius X
