Highlight 2: Interuniversity Master’s Degree in Introduction to Mental Health Research
with the participation of 5 Spanish universi- ties (University of Cantabria, UC; Com- plutense University of Madrid, UCM; Auton- mous University of Barcelona, UAB; University of Barcelona, UB and University of Cádiz, UCA). In 2012, the Report on this Master’s Degree was presented to the Ministry of Edu- cation. (ANECA). The official Master’s Degree is due to begin in the 2013-14 academic year.

Thematic Networks for Cooperative Health Research
The Thematic Networks for Cooperative Health Research (RETICS in Spanish) are ori- ented towards planned research and their aim is to generate new knowledge of strate- gic interest and thus contribute to provide a scientific basis for the programmes and poli- cies of the National Plan for R+D+I and a better position in the European Research Space.
They are composed of a minimum of 10 re- search groups from different public and pri- vate healthcare institutions and/or non-profit making public and private centres, from four or more Autonomous Communities, and which must have common research lines and objectives based on a particular topic. The RETICS have one coordinator who is effective- ly responsible for their scientific coordination and monitoring.
They do not have their own independent legal status and the management of the funds they receive is handled by the institutions to which the research groups belong.
In 2012 only 2 Thematic Networks for Coop- erative Health Research were funded as can be seen in the table below.
Redes Temáticas de Investigación Cooperativa en Salud (RETICS)
Las Redes Temáticas de Investigación Coope- rativa en Salud (RETICS) están orientadas a una investigación planificada y tienen como objeto la generación de nuevos conocimien- tos de interés estratégico, para contribuir de esta manera a fundamentar científicamente los programas y políticas del Plan Nacional de I+D+I y a un mayor posicionamiento en el Es- pacio Europeo de Investigación.
Están constituidas como mínimo por 10 grupos de investigación procedentes de diferentes ins- tituciones sanitarias públicas y privadas y/o cen- tros públicos o privados sin ánimo de lucro, de cuatro o más Comunidades Autónomas y que tengan líneas y objetivos de investigación co- munes alrededor de una temática específica. La RETICS cuenta con un único coordinador que es, a todos los efectos, responsable de la coor- dinación científica y seguimiento de la RETICS Carecen de entidad jurídica propia y la ges- tión de los fondos recibidos se lleva a cabo por las instituciones a las que pertenecen los grupos de investigación.
Durante el año 2012 solamente se han finan- ciado dos Redes Temáticas de Investigación Cooperativa, tal y como figura en la tabla.

In an extraordinary meeting held on the 25th of May 2012, the Board Council, in line with its legally attributed function, agreed with the le-
gal necessary majority to dissolve the institu- tion. It also agreed that, from the following year onwards and through a competitive pub- lic tender, the consortium to be dissolved would become a thematic network for coop- erative research (RETICS). In this way, it could continue to meet the objectives of the AES in the context of the Line of Articulation of the System in the National Plan which is currently in force.

Fundación CIEN 2012
ObjetivoEs una Fundación del Sector público estatal, ads- crita al Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII) que po- see entre sus fines el fomento, la promoción y la coordinación de la investigación en todos los campos de la neurología básica, clínica y epide- miológica, con especial énfasis en los problemas relacionados con las enfermedades neurológicas.
Desde su creación, ha estado trabajando e im- pulsando su labor investigadora para consoli- dar su liderazgo como modelo de referencia en España. La Fundación CIEN así como el Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red so- bre Enfermedades Neurológicas (CIBERNED), forman parte del consorcio europeo de cen- tros de excelencia, en este ámbito.
La Fundación CIEN gestiona la Unidad de Investi- gación del Proyecto Alzheimer (UIPA). La Funda- ción Reina Sofía cedió a la Fundación CIEN la ges- tión de dicha unidad, la cual forma parte de un proyecto más amplio, como es el Complejo Alzhei- mer sito en Vallecas y que consta de una Residencia para enfermos de Alzheimer y enfermedades rela- cionadas, un Hospital de Día y una Unidad Docen- te. La UIPA está dirigida a la investigación sobre Enfermedad de Alzheimer y enfermedades relacio- nadas, en inmediata proximidad al Área de Asisten- cia Sociosanitaria de dicho Centro. ObjectiveThis is a public sector foundation affiliated to the ISCIII whose aims include the pro- motion and coordination of research in all fields of basic, clinical and epidemiologi- cal neurology, with special emphasis on the problems related to neurological dis- eases.
Since its creation, it has worked to boost re- search and consolidate its position as the leading reference in this field in Spain. The CIEN Foundation along with the Centre for Network Biomedical Research into Neurologi- cal diseases (CIBERNED in Spanish) is part of the European Consortium for Centres of Ex- cellence in this field.
The CIEN Foundation manages the Research Unit of the Alzheimer’s Project (UIPA in Span- ish). The Queen Sofia Foundation handed over the management of this unit to the CIEN Foundation, and it is part of a broader project in the Alzheimer’s Complex in Vallecas which has a Residence for patients with Alzheimer’s and related disease, an outpatient facility and a Teaching Unit. The UIPA focuses on research into Alzheimer’s and related diseases, in con- junction with the Social Healthcare Area of the centre. Structure
The medical, research and management staffs of the CIEN Foundation are organized into the following departments:
• Department of Management and Adminis- tration.
• Department of Neuroimaging – Platform for 3 Tesla Magnetic Resonance and Neuro- imaging Laboratory (composed of neurora- diologists, I.T. specialists, physicists, tele- communications engineers).
• Department of Neuropathology–Diagnosis and Research into the donated human brain. Tissue Bank of the CIEN Foundation.
• Department of Laboratories (Cellular Biology Laboratory and Neuropathology Laboratory).
• Multidisciplinary Support Unit (UMA in Span- ish) (composed of neurologists, psychiatrists, neuropsychologists and sociologists).
Human Resources
In 2012, the CIEN Foundation had a total of 75 members of staff, of whom 28 were hired em- ployed using both the funds granted and competitive calls, 4 were on internships, 9 were volunteers who were cooperating free of charge in the activities of the CIEN Founda- tion, 1 was a MIR programme trainee doctor and 33 were working thanks to thanks to the collaborations agreements in place.
Economic Resources
In 2012 the CIEN Foundation had a budget which was slightly under 4 million euros (3.6 million euros), which offered economic sta- bility in relation to the budget of 2011. As a public Foundation dependent on the Minis- try of Economy and Competitiveness through the ISCIII, 30% of this budget comes from the official subsidy granted by the ISCIII. The 2012 Cien Foundation budget from the Spanish National Budget was 825,300 euros (655,900 euros running costs and 169,300 euros in capital expenditure), and remained at the same level as in previ- ous years.

Recursos Humanos
En 2012 la Fundación CIEN ha contado con un total de 75 profesionales, de los que 28 son contratados con cargo tanto a subvenciones como a concurrencia competitiva, 4 son beca- rios, 9 voluntarios que han colaborado desin- teresadamente en las actividades de la Fun- dación CIEN, 1 MIR en formación y 33 desarrollan su actividad gracias a los conve- nios de colaboración suscritos.
Recursos económicos
La Fundación CIEN gestionó en el año 2012 un pre- supuesto ligeramente inferior a los 4 millones de euros, (3,6 millones de euros) que representa estabi- lización económica, en relación a los recursos ges- tionados en 2011. Como Fundación de ámbito esta- tal dependiente del Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad a través del Instituto de Salud Car- los III, el 30% de dicho presupuesto proviene de la subvención oficial del ISCIII. El presupuesto de la Fundación CIEN para el año 2012 proviene de los Presupuestos Generales del Estado y asciende a 825,3 miles de euros (655,9 miles de euros en gastos corrientes y 169,3 miles de euros en gastos de capi- tal), manteniéndose igual a los de años anteriores.
It is necessary to highlight the continued com- mitment of the Queen Sofia Foundation, which in budgetary terms translates into a ma- jor contribution to the total income of the CIEN Foundation. Furthermore, the measures adopted to boost the model of public-private funding in order to increase the resources available for research could be seen in the re- sources obtained from sponsors, which in 2012 has again accounted for 22% of the an- nual budget.

Además, las medidas adoptadas para potenciar el modelo de financiación público-privado con el objetivo de aumentar los recursos disponibles para la investigación, quedan plasmados en los recursos obtenidos mediante patrocinadores, que en 2012 han supuesto nuevamente en este ejercicio el 22% del presupuesto anual.
