The home stadium of HSV, the Hamburg football (soccer) club, has had many names. Originally it was called Volks parkstadion, since 2001 AOL Arena, since 2007 HSH Nordbank Arena, and from 2010 until June 2015 its official name was Imtech Arena.
The stadium was the site of five games during the FIFA World Cup in 2006, including a quarter-final game. It hosted the UEFA Europa League Final in 2010. Not only is it one of Europe’s most modern football stadiums, but it also has an interesting construction history.
Unlike the other FIFA World Cup stadiums, the arena wasn’t built from scratch, but on the grounds of the Volks parkstadion, which was torn down in several stages starting in June 1998. The playing field was “rotated” and new stands were built. In August 2000, the last roof membrane was attached. All 57,000 seats (including a 10,000 person standing room section and 3,400 business-seats) are covered.
A 90-minute tour gives visitors a look inside the world of professional football. The HSV often plays to a full stadium, so

With its large number of leisure activities, this is one of Hamburg’s most beloved and largest parks. The city acquired the grounds of this former hunting preserve in 1902, and created the Stadtpark on an area of 150 ha (371 acres).
There are sun-bathing meadows, a lake with boats for hire, an outdoor public pool, an open-air stage, a festival meadow, a beer garden, barbecues, restaurants, trails and football fields.
An architectural highlight within the park is the water tower (1912–15), which has been home to the Planeta rium since 1930. The massive dome

Friedhof Ohlsdorf is one of the largest cemeteries in the world. With its impressive garden design and countless artfully sculpted grave stones, it is a place of international impor tance. Since it opened in 1877, some 1.4 million burials have taken place in the cemetery.
Many well-known people have been laid to rest in Friedhof Ohlsdorf, such as actors Hans Albers and Gustaf Gründgens, zoo founder Carl The HSV-Arena, the home stadium of the

book early for tickets to home games. From time to time the stadium also holds open-air concerts, featuring rock and pop stars, such as the Rolling Stones or Bruce Springsteen.
In 2004, the HSV-Museum opened here. Visitors can learn everything there is to know about the HSV, which was founded in 1887. Along with trophies, there are original shirts belonging to legendary HSV players.
The Stadtpark’s planetarium, with its impressive dome
measures 21 m (69 ft) in diameter. Thanks to state-of-the-art computer software and simulation technology, this planetarium presents stunning 3-D shows. On the 257 reclining seats, visitors can relax as they turn their attention from Earth to the stars. Special shows also take viewers deep inside the universe, focus on the Big Bang and the Earth’s creation, or investigate cosmic collisions, making the science of astronomy a true adventure.

Whether printing plant, office, harbour or fish factory – you can learn about traditional Hamburg pro fessions here. Great store is laid on lively presentation:
visitors can set machines in motion and create things in various workshops.

Köhlbrandbrücke
5 km (3 miles) southwest of the city centre. .
Serving both as a landmark and a major traffic route, the 3.6-km (2.25-mile) long Köhlbrandbrücke was opened in 1974 after four years of construction. The bridge arches gracefully over the Köhlbrand channel, linking two parts of the Elbe – the Norderelbe and the Süderelbe.
The four-lane highway on ramps, supported by 75 pillars, leads to the cable-stayed bridge, with its two 135-m (443-ft)-high pylons.
The impressive Köhlbrandbrücke bridge is for use by motor vehicles ex clu sively; bicyclists and pedestrians are not allowed to cross it. Even at high tide, large ships can easily pass under this bridge, with its clearance of 53 m (174 ft).

Ferries sailing for Landungsbrücken or Finkenwerder stop at the Neumühlen ferry docks, where the Museums hafen Övelgönne (Övelgönne museum harbour) is located. Founded in 1977 by the
“Vereinigung zur Erhaltung historischer Wasserfahrzeuge”, an association dedicated to preserving historic ships and boats, the museum harbour survives without state sub sidies;
its work is supported only by membership fees and donations.
It is a magical draw for old-ship enthusiasts, with many to be admired from the dock here.
There are German and Dutch flat-bottomed boats, the former lightship Elbe 3 (built in 1888), the lighter Elfriede (1904), the tugboats Tiger (1910) and Claus D. (1913), and even an icebreaker, the Stettin (1933).
All these “old-timers” are still seaworthy. Some still make excursions – mainly on weekends – so it is best to view the boats during the week.
When the owner or crew is present, you can often go on board for a peek below deck.

Hadag Ferry No. 62
If you want to see the Elbe shore from the water, the best way is to ride the HADAG ferry No. 62 (see also pp240–41). The ferry departs every 15 minutes from the Landungsbrücken (at pier 3) and, after a 28-minute journey, arrives at Finkenwerder on the south shore of the Elbe. There are several places where you can break up your journey and re-embark later: the ferry docks of Altona (below the Altonaer Balkon, see p117), Dockland (near the futuristic-looking office building of the same
name, see p115), or Neumühlen (where the Museumshafen Övel gönne is located). Finally, the ferry crosses over to the opposite Elbe shore and lands at Finken werder. With luck, you will be able to see the Airbus planes that are built there taking off or landing.
