In September, many events still take place outdoors in Hamburg. However, it is becoming a bit too chilly for sports events to be held outside. Still, autumn has its own special mood, especially in the parks, such as in Planten un Blomen. It is also lovely along the Elbe river at this time of year.
A stiff breeze often blows off the harbour, but boat trips of the port area are still available.
Autumn is also the season for theatre and literature festivals and events dedicated to boats and boating.

The Hamburger Dom takes place three times a year Winter
A festive atmosphere prevails at the Christmas markets in the centre of town and the adjoining districts. The cold in January and February, which can sometimes be bitter, does not spoil the good mood of Hamburg’s citizens. In fact, they embrace the weather and, when the Alster lakes freeze over, have great fun ice skating.
In the winter months, bookstores and cultural institutions, such as the Literaturhaus, hold many readings.
December
Weihnachtsmärkte (Christmas markets) (end Nov–24 Dec).
The whole city gets into the festive mood as
Christmas markets spring up here and there around the city.
Especially popular and crowded are the markets at Rathausplatz, Gerhart-Hauptmann-Platz, around St Petri church and at the Gänsemarkt. In addition to these larger markets located in Old Town and New Town, the smaller markets held for example in St Pauli, Eimsbüttel or Ottensen also are very fascinating. Each mar ket has its own Christmas tree. Stalls sell various culinary delights.
New Year’s Eve (31 Dec). As one year ends and the next begins, Ham burgers are noticeably relaxed. There are large crowds on the waterfront, especially at
the Lan dungsbrü cken, where a concert of ships’ sirens greets the new year, the heavens above the harbour light up colourfully with spectacular fireworks, thousands of champagne corks pop and complete strangers wish each other a happy New Year. The cheerful celebrations continue long after midnight until the early morning hours.
January
Ice Fun on the Alster (when the ice is thick enough). When it is bitterly cold outside, and the ice covering the Alster is deemed by the city to be thick enough to be safe, numerous walkers and ice skaters throng here. It is easy enough to warm up at one of the many mulled wine
stands which are set up on the riverbanks and on the frozen Alster. Some-times, though, Hamburgers wait expectantly and eagerly for enough of a freeze to create thick ice to skate over, only to be disappointed when it does not happen.
Lessingtage (two weeks end Jan–early Feb). Literature festival held at the Thalia Theater (see p59) and other stages in honour of the renowned author Gotthold Ephraim Lessing.
February
Reisen Hamburg (early Feb). At this internatio nal tourism fair, about 1000 exhibitors from around the world showcase their products.
Maskenzauber an der Alster (weekend before Shrove Tuesday).
Carnival the Hanseatic way, with style, elegance and “noblesse”
held in front of the Venetian-style backdrop of the Alster Arcades. The highlight of the festival is the historic masquer-ade ball which is held in varying venues. Classes are offered to visitors who wish to learn how to dance historical dances.
LiLaBe (after Ash Wednesday).
The largest North German carnival is held at the HAW Bergedorf. Ten thousand revellers make this two-day festival a giant party.
