Kehrwieder- spitze

Map 9 B5.  Baumwall. @ 3, 4, 6.

One of the most photographed subjects in the Hanseatic city is this spit of land jutting out from Kehrwieder Island. This is due, above all, to the striking buildings located here, between the Elbe river and the canals, that, when seen together, create a futuristic-looking ensemble. The tower of Columbus Haus is 100 m (328 ft) high, for example.

As the gateway to Speicherstadt and HafenCity, Kehr wiederspitze is an impor-tant landmark: everyone who decides to visit the historic warehouses or learn about Europe’s biggest construction project will come past here.

Fennel and curry powder, cloves, cardamom and saffron, vanilla and cinnamon – in this unusual spice museum, the scent of more than 50 spices perfumes the air.

A notice telling visitors to

“follow their noses” sends them to the second floor of this warehouse, where the museum has been located since 1993. The museum informs visitors about how to use, properly store, and assess the quality of spices.

Photos, maps and displays show where our spices come from and the processes used before they wind up in our food, from cultivation onwards.

Spicy’s is also a hands-on museum in which you are encouraged to touch, smell and even sample the spices on display. Along with the pungent spices themselves, there are a lot of interesting exhibits of tools and other equipment used around the world to gather, process and transport spices.

215,000 tiny people and 230,000 trees are integrated into the model. Push buttons allow visitors to step into the miniature action and make windmills spin or cause spectators to break out into cheers as a goal is scored in the HSV-Arena.

More than 12 million people have already visited this model railway, which is constantly being expanded and improved upon. Numerous countries are modelled including Austria, Switzerland (both with their gorgeous alpine landscapes), Hamburg (with HafenCity), Scandinavia and the USA (including natural attractions such as the Grand Canyon and glitzy cities such as Las Vegas).

Italy is under construction, and more regions are being planned – among them

England, France and Africa.

The behind-the-scenes tour is highly recom-mended. Since only a limited number of visitors can be accommodated at any given time, lines can be long.

Torture, fear and gloom await visitors to this dark cellar.

Down in these catacombs the gruesome history of over 2,000 years of Hamburg is featured, although the city is not even 1,200 years old. Even so, this trip through time offers visitors a great many horrors, taking them through the bloodiest periods and documenting the grisliest scenes in the city’s history.

These include the Inquisition, the cholera epidemic, the execution (by beheading) of the pirate Störtebeker, raging infernos and a terrible flood – all of which are experienced up-close during the 90-minute interactive tour.

Special effects, eerie background sounds, and clever lighting increase the ghastly atmosphere. A visit here is not recommended for children under ten years of age, but older children and adults will have fun – as long as their nerves hold up, of course.

Experience an old as well as typical part of Hamburg. A building that is over 100 years old gives the authentic setting for this exciting experience. In this privately operated branch of the Museum der Arbeit (Labour Museum; see p135), the history of Spei cherstadt, meaning dockland, is documented engagingly.

Typical work tools and trade goods – among them sampling implements and coffee sacks,

tea chests and balls of rubber – provide a glimpse into the world of those who worked in this warehouse district which once was the largest in the world.

These warehouse employees appraised the goods, sorted them and were responsible for their proper storage.

This is definitely not your usual museum collection where you can look but not feel. Here, you can also touch

the exhibits and sometimes even taste them.

The exhibit is accompanied by historic photographs on the history of Speicherstadt and gives an interesting insight into long-forgotten occupa-tions that were once carried out here. Coffee, cocoa and tea tastings are held at the museum on a regular basis, as well as readings by writers of crime fiction.

The Port’s Birthday

Hamburgers consider 7 May 1189 to be the birthday of their port.

It was supposedly on this day that Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa awarded customs-exempt status to ships that sailed the Elbe river all the way from the city to the North Sea, guaranteeing the city’s merchants the trading privileges they had long sought. Even when the relevant document later turned out to be a fake, Hamburgers persist in believing in its veracity. Every year, on 7 May, thousands flock to the port to celebrate its birthday. The first gigantic party was held in 1989 in honour of the port’s 800th anniversary. The highpoints of the three-day festivities are the parade of tall ships, the dragon boat races and the tugboat ballet. All along the harbour promenade between Kehrwiederspitze and the Fish Auction Hall you can listen to music and see dance, shows and much more.
