Faculty with whom candidates work in professional education classes and clinical practice have knowledge and experiences related to preparing candidates to work with students from diverse cultural backgrounds, including students with exceptionalities. Additionally, survey information from unit faculty noted in Chart 11 below shows a wealth of experience related to diverse settings that have enabled the faculty to design learning experiences for developing appropriate competencies in candidates.

The recruitment of diverse faculty remains a primary emphasis area for the University and unit as noted in the conceptual framework within the Professionalism component and in Goal 9 for the unit which states, “Highly qualified, diverse, and creative faculty who are committed to excellence in teaching, service, and scholarly activity will be consistently recruited.” The unit has used a variety of recruitment techniques to secure faculty who are underrepresented to include such strategies as letters of invitation to all historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) within the United States, presentations and recruitment booths at state-wide events, and support for doctoral studies of program participants. In spite of these efforts, however, the unit is unsatisfied with the level of diversity across all programs. To counteract this situation, clinical school-based faculty and adjuncts who contribute to a more diverse experience are utilized within all programs. The unit is committed to identifying those individuals who are potential faculty members and who can offer a more diverse experience for candidates.
