3.3.1. Limitaciones a la hora de analizar los resultados:
Many verbs of this type are characterized by forms with -ez in their present tense:
The fourth conjugation includes a large number of verbs with an infinitive in oi. Most of these are characterized by present tense forms in -esc. A citi 'to read' is a an example:
citesc citeşti citeşte am citit ai citit a citit
I read (present) citim citiţi citesc 1 read (past) am citit
aţi citit au citit
Other verbs in this conjugation follow the model of a dormi 'to sleep':
dorm 1 sleep dormim
dormi dormiţi
doarme dorm
am dormit I slept am dormit
ai dormit aţi dormit
a dormit au dormit
Note how in the first conjugation there is a concordance between the forms of the third person singular and the third person plural:
e.g. invită 'he/she invites', invită 'they invite'. In the other conju
gations there is a concordance between the first person singular and the third person plural: e.g. citesc '1 read', citesc 'they read'.
The verb table at the back of the book provides the present tense forms of commonly used verbs. (See also Unit 10)
Note that the present tense is used in Romanian where English uses such forms as '1 have been reading', '1 have been learning'.
In such cases the adverbial constructions de mult, de puţin timp, de puţină vreme are of ten used:
Citesc de mult această carte
I have been reading this book for a long time

Just as 'the' is expressed in Romanian by adding a suffix (or ending) to the noun, so there are special endings to indicate 'of the', 'to the'. In the dialogue we met the following examples of these:
la capătul magazinului În dreapta paltoanelor nasturele fustei vânzătoarei
at the end of the shop to the right of the overcoats the button of the skirt
(speaking to) the shop assistant You will see that magazinul 'the shop' becomes magazinului when we want to express 'of the shop'. Similarly, paltoane 'the overcoats' has become paltoanelor 'of the overcoats', while vânzătoarea 'the shop assistant' changes to vânzătoarei to mean 'to the shop
assistant'. Note that the 'to the' and 'of the' forms are identical.
