Happy Birthday!

Beatrix Potter (1866–1943) is the author and illustrator of many beloved children’s stories, including The Tale of Peter Rabbit and The Tale of Tom Kitten. The English writer, who was born in London, was also a natural scientist and farmer.

Her keen observations of the natural world and its plant and animal inhabitants helped bring her writings and drawings to life. Potter ultimately wrote 30 books, with 23 of them geared toward children. The popular 2006 movie Miss Potter, starring Renée Zellweger, chronicles her life.

Word to the Wise

The word Jedi is familiar to anyone who has watched a Star Wars movie. It refers to those magical, lightsaber-wielding monks of the Force. Well, Jedi is now an official term in the dictionary, meaning “a person who shows extraordinary skill or expertise in a field.”

Set the Record Straight

In 2007, some news outlets reported the alarming news that redheads were on pace to become extinct in a few hundred years. Only 1% to 2% of the population has red hair.

The argument goes that because red hair comes from recessive genes, redheads who have offspring with non-redheads will precipitate the disappearance of ginger hair. This conclusion is far from scientific.

Even non-redheads can still carry genes for red hair. This allows the offspring of two non-redheads carrying the recessive genes to be born, you guessed it, with red hair.
