THE THE

On This Date

1146 – A conference of European leaders outlawed the crossbow. By banning such an effective weapon, they believed that they had ended wars for all time.

1682 – William Penn sailed from England to the Americas and went on to establish the colony of Pennsylvania. A 37-foot bronze statue of him has stood atop City Hall in Philadelphia since 1894.

1984 – President Ronald Reagan was inducted into the Sportscasting Hall of Fame.

Penn Statue Trivia

A gentlemen’s agreement that no structure should rise above the Penn statue was violated in 1986 when a taller building was erected,

bringing about a “curse” on local sports teams. This ended in 2008 when the Phillies won the World Series, just 16 months after a small

Penn statuette had been affixed to the top of the new Comcast Center.

Happy Birthday!

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797–1851) was an English novelist, biographer, and travel writer who is best known for her Gothic novel Frankenstein. Shelley came up with the story

during a summer in Switzerland with her husband, poet and philosopher Percy Bysshe Shelley, and poet Lord Byron.

Her other books include Valperga (1823), The Last Man (1826), Lodore (1835), and Falkner (1837).

Shelley was a feminist of her time and strongly believed that women were intellectually equal to men.

She died of a brain tumor at age 53.

You Are What You Eat

Whiskey aficionados have long claimed that adding a little water to their drink enhances the taste.

Science now proves them correct!

Within whiskey is a chemical compound called guaiacol, which gives whiskey its smoky taste.

Guaiacol is amphipathic. This means that parts of the molecule are both water-repelling and water-attracting. When additional water is added to whiskey, the guaiacol rises to the surface, imparting a smoother, smokier flavor. However, add too much water and the guaiacol is pushed down, suppressing taste.

Riddle Me This

This Persian poet and philosopher said, “Have patience. All things are difficult before they become easy.”

Root of the Matter

Hair of the dog

Those suffering from a hangover after excessive drinking have been known to have a little hair of the dog, or a drink of alcohol, the day after as a cure, but this expression has nothing to do with drinking alcohol. Instead, it comes from the old belief that if someone was bitten by a rabid dog and contracted rabies, the cure would come from ingesting a potion made from that same dog’s hair. In both instances, with rabies and a hangover, there is no evidence that these cures actually work.

Today is

Slinky Day. This iconic toy was invented by naval engineer Richard James in 1943. The idea came to him while developing springs that could stabilize sensitive instruments aboard a ship in rough seas.
